“Jackson William Miller” (born October 29, 1991), known as “Jaymay”, is an American rapper, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist musician from Charleston, South Carolina. He’s the only child of Louisa and William Miller, however his mother later gave birth to a daughter (Leah) and son (Dylan) from a different father after Jackson’s father William walked out on the family when he was just six years old. The family lived in a small home in Charleston up until Jackson left at the age of 17 and moved to Chicago, Illinois with his then girlfriend Demi. The pair’s relationship lasted three years in Chicago before things fell apart and they both went their separate ways with Demi moving back out home to South Carolina and Jackson deciding to remain in Chicago.

It was shortly after moving to Chicago that Jackson discovered a talent for music, he had begun learning to play guitar from the age of 14 but it wasn’t until moving out of South Carolina that he really found a love for music and he began learning to play as many instruments as he could find. He states that he always had wild dreams of being a singer in a rock band, but didn’t quite have the voice to become an iconic frontman like he pictured in his mind. But it was in Chicago where he started to experiment and discover different genres of music that he previously never really took the time to listen to, one of those genre’s being rap and hip-hop. He found himself fascinated with the pace of the songs deliveries and the word-play, inspired by rap groups like Run DMC and Beastie Boys and more modern rap artists like Eminem and Jay-Z he explored the genre as much as he could and begun writing his own raps based around his experiences.

As he worked on his craft, both as a rapper and an instrumentalist where he would spend days reading his words over and over again until he had them embedded into his memory and could recite them with ease. After approximately seven months of spending almost all of his free time working on ways to get better at rapping he began performing at local venues, mostly open mic nights and freestyle evenings at bars and underground clubs in and around Chicago. After about a year and a half, he felt like he was getting nowhere with this. He was working a job at a Chicago Trips and Excursions Center and during his free time trying to make something happen with a music career, but rapping didn’t seem to be opening the doors for him. He decided that a better route into a music career would be as an instrumentalist, and so he focused on getting jobs as a session musician. At least this way he would be getting paid.

He met and played guitar with a few semi-famous musicians and bands which helped begin to open the door for him and it was while playing guitar at a music festival in Los Angeles, California for a singer called Alex Simms who had released a couple of singles at Songs to Love and Die By at that time and had a small buzz that helped Jackson find his breakthrough. At that festival was an A+R girl for the label at the time called Cara Zayn, the two spoke backstage and he explained what he really wanted to be doing in his music career. She recommended that he send some demo’s her way. Months later Cara took over the day to day running of the record label and after putting her own stamp and vision on the label she got in contact with Jackson once more, he went into a recording studio and recorded a couple of his own written works and within another couple of months was signed to his first ever record deal.

It took a while before he found himself in a recording studio, with the label to encourage him to continue to work with other artists for a while to absorb some more knowledge of how the industry works. But by October 2015 he was in a recording studio in New York City working on songs for his debut album. One of those songs was a promotional single called “Stronger Than You Think” which was released on November 30, 2015, it came without major promotion and little information about the artist behind the song as a way to gauge reaction to the work. It received some social buzz on sites like YouTube, Spotify and SoundCloud and was considered successful, especially considering the fact that nobody knew who this artist by the name of “Jaymay” was or even what he looked like.

In March 2016, having featured on a remix version of a Riot! in the Boulevard track, it was announced that “Jaymay” would be featured on an alternative version of a Chantal Hayes track which is set to be released as a single called, “One Way Ticket”. It’s also expected that his official debut single will be coming in the following weeks and that completion of a debut E.P will be coming in time for Summer with a full length debut album expected later in the year.
