Early Beginnings
Tealiyah Phuong, (Pronounced Ta-Lee-ya, Fu-ong) better known by her stage name 'Liyah' is an Asian/American rapper, songwriter, and singer. Born on June 15th, 1994 (19) to American mother Anna Marie and Asian father Nianzu Phuong, she the youngest of two. Liyah is of Asian, Vietnamese, Korean, and American descent but was born a city of Cambodia called Phnom Pehn, the capital city. During her time there, she lived with her parents but spent majority of her time with her grandparents. They were very strict in following specific traditions but Liyah was always interested in life outside of her culture. At 9 years old, her father took a new job in Brooklyn, New York, causing the family to move. Being a stranger to the states, Liyah was entranced with the American life and more-so with the Hip Hop movement. Her sister, Pich, would travel across town to watch different shows where she witnessed a rap battle for the first time. She cites this as 'the moment she knew she wanted to be a rapper'. Liyah attended James Madison High School from 2009 - 2012 and managed to graduate a year early due to her high academic scores and skills. She decided not to attend college and instead wanted to pursue a musical career. Since she was an unknown face in music, she teamed up with a local music studio and was signed on to be a songwriter. She has written songs for a few local artists and even for the likes of Paula DeAnda, JoJo, Amerie and more. It wasn't until January of this year she was given a chance to prove herself. She is currently unsigned but looking for a record deal. She's working on her debut mix tape but has already been in the studio with some of the industries top artists as ghost writers, meaning she didn't receive credit for her work.

Musical Influences & Style
Liyah names her musical influences as Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Foxy Brown, N.W.A, Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Queen Latifah, Salt N Peppa, MC Lyte, Eric B & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, De La Soul, Missy Elliot, Lisa Lopes, A Tribe Called Quest, etc. She's also a fan of R&B music and has been commented on having a beautiful singing voice. She states, "Although I can't blow like Whitney Houston, I can stay on key and rock the stage!" She has been known to have a relaxed and calm nature but loves to party and have a good time. She can be spotted at all the hottest clubs and parties, even if she's performing later on. Liyah still practices some of her Asian traditions but has mostly converted to American ways. Liyah describes her style or rapping as a mixture of 'straight forward' and 'sung rhythmic style'. She also takes pride in her appearance, stating that she is the 'only Vietnamese, braces wearing female rapper, ever'. She's expected to drop her mix tape in later Fall.

Preview 'Pay Ya Dues' Right Now!

UserPostedImage

Length: 4:57
Released: June 18, 2013
Produced By:
Written By: Tealiyah Phuong
Label: N/A

[Lyrics]
Italics = Sung

[Hook]
Get loud, it's time to celebrate
Stay wild, don't you ever, ever change
Don't ever change
She'll pick up the lucky reigns
Because, it doesn't matter what you do
Just pay ya dues, Imma pay my dues

[Verse 2]
I stay reppin' my city cause they saw my motherfuckin' shine
Now I'm gone stay in my city till that motherfucker mine
Every chick that's on that corner, they all my ride or dies
Always built this bad bitch up when she came up with them rhymes
I never introduce myself, I let my paper talk show it in my walk
Fuck what you thought, or what you heard throw that shit to the birds
A spoken word, everything I learned
You aint got no spine like a fuckin' worm
All these bitches need a fuckin' perm
Aint got time for that, as matter of fact
Aint gotta wear tracks, cause I got it like that
Light a few, puff puff pass got them lookin' at my ass
But I'm Asian so its non existent, I can feel the water tricklin'
So I take a few drinks to the head
Never promised to be perfect, but swear to god I'm worth it
You do ya dirty work and meanwhile I'm tryna stay lit
Done with the strugglin', can we please pass out the hearses?

[Hook]
Get loud, it's time to celebrate
Stay wild, don't you ever, ever change
Don't ever change
She'll pick up the lucky reigns
Because, it doesn't matter what you do
Just pay ya dues, Imma pay my dues

Background/Description
Following the almost chain like events from a certain freestyle, it seems female rappers have gotten a fire under their behinds and been throwing verses and replies left and right, everyone except Liyah that is. Unlike the other females, Liyah was one of the only women to stay out of the chaotic beef that "had nothing to do with her" and remains focused on getting her own music and mixtape, which has been long awaited, out this spring. Liyah took to Twitter to tease a new single coming and that she was close to finishing her mixtape. Without any flashy promos or further waiting, Liyah dropped her new single, 'Parasite' on her official website. The 3 minute, 58 second song serves as another promo single for the mixtape, possibly trying to recapture her audience with a buzz single or just treat her fans to some music since it's been a while. During the crazy and, admit it, entertaining back and forth between certain rappers, Liyah was asked why she never made a response freestyle.

"Nobody said my name," she stated, "So until somebody calls me out directly and not shade then I will keep on with my own career and not get sidetracked. It wasn't my beef anyway, so I wasn't gonna jump in it. I already dealt with B Stacks, or whatever, and that wasn't even nothin' so I'm good over here. I know nobody will get that bold to directly refer to me so, it's whatever."

'Parasite' has been labeled contemporary R&B that is topped off with menacing strings. The track features Liyah's singing, which she rarely exercises, but when she does, it's quite a track to hear. She mixes her singing with rapping on each verse, her funny yet serious lyrics which set her apart. The song mainly focuses on Liyah's career and declaring that she is a "Human parasite/I live off of your fear" meaning she enjoys being attacked or even questioned of her credibility in the industry. The song has also contains hints of spacey synths and clattering with reverbed percussion, with hand claps in the background. Her voice remains calm and not the least bit menacing as the beat portrays, giving off a dark vibe to the hip hop song. In the chorus, Liyah sings about being a parasite, feeding from any hate she receives and she believes that she was made to rap amongst the hesitation to taker her serious or see her as competition. For the bridge, she speaks about not even knowing what she was doing or saying, possibly inferring that she was under the influence of marijuana at the time of recording.

[Lyrics]
[Verse 1]
Chump change, take that, I prefer the rubber bands
Watch my every move from the back cus you been a fan
They don't wanna admit, acting like they past me
My ego gettin bigger than the breasts on Serenity
Talk big, think big, that's just how I always do
Swear I need to write a book for dummies so you learn how to
Spit real fire, instead of tellin' lies
When somebody makes you target number one, you finna rise
It's time to go now
See if you can catch up
Fixing hip hop's problem
You can just call me the answer
I had to slow it down, so you can understand
You'll never be prepared for the shit that I have planned
High off my own fumes, I don't need shit from you
But hurry and jump on my train before your seat's refused
I'm that breath of fresh air, they the reason that you hold your breath
Each lyric I deliver similar to kiss of death
I leave a trail of tears, but I'm no Cherokee
I'll let you soak the fame in while I dust my feet

[Chorus]
I don't even know the saying
But this shit was meant for I
Throwing things into the sky
Then I watch and wait for them to fall
I just take a seat and learn
Patience is a virtue but I love to feel the burn
Human parasite
I live off of your fear
It's about to get too real for the fakes in here (Ohhh)
But you know you love to watch
You know everything I got
Cus this shit was meant for I (Ohhh)

[Verse 2]
I'm going crazy have me committed
But you wouldn't try me, drop the case, I'm acquitted
I'm passing kool aid, drink, drink, time to attack
Jim Jones ain't the only one with the best batch
Wait, I didn't mean that
Yes I did, drink it all up then fall as I laugh
Them wigs I just snatched
Give these bitches ammo to eat and they stuff they face
Can't even look at me like I sprayed they ass with mace
(But what is it they want?)
Tryna watch me if I stumble
But I'm sleeping so good, B, zzzzzz, like a bumble
Sitting on my throne cus braggin's something that I don't need
When it's good, real good, you shine like royalty
Vietnam all the way to states
Gotta organize all requests for tour dates
Same ol' decree and it's gettin' real boring
Didn't anybody tell you it's always better foreign?

[Chorus]
I don't even know the saying
But this shit was meant for I
Throwing things into the sky
Then I watch and wait for them to fall
I just take a seat and learn
Patience is a virtue but I love to feel the burn
Human parasite
I live off of your fear
It's about to get too real for the fakes in here (Ohhh)
But you know you love to watch
You know everything I got
Cus this shit was meant for I (Ohhh)

[Spoken]
I mean....I could be high right now and not even know it
But I'm high right now
I can't even feel nothing, but I'm feeling myself
I'm real comfortable right now, like I'm too infatuated with the game right now

[Bridge]
And I ain't goin back
No, no, no
And I ain't goin back
No, no, no

[Chorus]
I don't even know the saying
But this shit was meant for I
Throwing things into the sky
Then I watch and wait for them to fall
I just take a seat and learn
Patience is a virtue but I love to feel the burn
Human parasite
I live off of your fear
It's about to get too real for the fakes in here (Ohhh)
But you know you love to watch
You know everything I got
Cus this shit was meant for I (Ohhh)
