Forgotten Ceremony is a song by Chinese-American hip hop artist Lotus from her debut studio album Forgotten Ceremony. It features vocals from up and coming hip hop artist Drew Westbrook and serves as the album's lead single , as well as the title track . It was produced solely by NinaT ( Nina Tarantino ; Rum ) and written solely by Sarojini 'Lotus' Lui . Lotus announced the single in an interview with Billboard on October 27th , 2013 , along with a little information about the album it features on , and was released exactly 2 weeks later on November 10th , 2013 .
Forgotten Ceremony , along with another track from Forgotten Ceremony called Your World were recorded in 2013 during the recording sessions for Lotus' future collaboration with Rum . Rum wanted the two songs to appear on a future project she has coming up with Flame 1&2 and inZane , but Lotus chose to keep them for her upcoming studio album instead . The early version of the instrumental was created in 2013 by NinaT , but when Lotus wrote a different hook and had Westbrook jump on the track with her , Nina decided to in her words just , " snip and fix " certain parts , and ended rejuvenating the whole thing , which turned into a completely different song .
Forgotten Ceremony is composed in a D minor key, and plays in common time at a tempo of 72 beats per minute. The vocals ranges from a G3 to C6. Lotus lyrically captured the whole feel of pretty much all 3 of her past singles and inserted more of a boastful tone in it . In an interview with Billboard not so long ago , Lotus stated that Forgotten Ceremony was pretty much the real aim of the album and that it explains itself . When NinaT asked for the song to be on the future project with the 3 other producers that she frequently collaborates on , Lotus thought it would get lost on the project and decided to keep it as the " center piece " for her next album . The song's lyrics can be interpreted as Lotus' and Westbrook's farewell to all the ringtone rappers' career . It even includes a comical " remix " written by Lotus and performed by an unlisted man with a very deep voice , almost preacher-like , to the Anglican burial service as the bridge .
Forgotten Ceremony has received mixed reviews , but majority of them were good . Many described the song as " smooth and mellifluous , " while other's called it a " replica of all 3 of her previous singles mashed together . " Critics stood up for the song and defended it , replying , " That would make sense if the song explains the whole album ... " DJ Booth praised the track as an " appropriately bombastic and boastful intro to an epic LP that is bound to send shock waves throughout the whole industry . " Panning the song as " laughably overblown ", Ian Cohen of Pitchfork Media writes that Lotus has Drew Westbrook " cycle through every dead career caused by ' something new ' cliche short of mentioning himself , who has no music out , but is liked because he's the ' new thing ' . "
