Title: If I Were a Boy/You Oughta Know
Artist: Reese Hollinsworth
Release date: June 8, 2014
Length: 4:27
Formats: Compact disc, digital download
Genre: Pop, alternative rock, post-grunge
Label: Independently released
Writers: Alanis Morrisette, Glen Ballard, BC Jean, Toby Gad
Producers: Glen Ballard, Toby Gad, Beyoncé Knowles

"If I Were a Boy/You Oughta Know" is a cover recorded by Reese Hollinsworth of American recording artist Beyoncé's "If I Were a Boy", which includes most of the first half of Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know"; for Hollinsworth's debut EP, In Hiding... (1 of 2). The song is separated into two parts, the first part - "If I Were a Boy" - was written by BC Jean and Toby Gad, who also handled its production alongside Knowles; while "You Oughta Know" - the second half of the cover - was written by Alanis Morrisette, Glen Ballard, with the production handled by the latter. Inspired by the difficult break-up of a romantic relationship, the song was initially recorded by Jean, whose record company rejected it. Knowles then recorded her own version. Jean was upset when she learned that Knowles was releasing it as a single, but eventually they reached an agreement. "If I Were a Boy/You Oughta Know" will be independently released to digital and physical retailers as the fourth single from the EP along with its b-sides: "Broken-Hearted Girl", which was included on the deluxe edition of the EP; and "I Care", a song which is set to appear on the upcoming follow-up to Hollinsworth's debut, In Hiding... (2 of 2).

"If I Were a Boy" is a pop introspective ballad which draws influences from folk rock through its instrumentation of which includes acoustic guitars, drums and strings. The song's lyrics lament the misunderstandings between the genders and indict the male side of relationships. Several changes were made to the song, most notably the addition of the first half of "You Oughta Know" and the omission of "If I Were a Boy"'s final line. The cover was generally well received by critics, who complimented Hollinsworth's tormented and emotive vocal performance, most notably Josh Modell of The A.V. Club, who stated that Hollinsworth's vocals "gave the song vulnerability and strength when it needed them." However, some critics had questioned the use and choice of pronouns in the song.

At first, Hollinsworth intended to only cover the entirety of "If I Were a Boy", as it had appeared on the deluxe edition of In Hiding... (1 of 2). However, the decision to include "You Oughta Know" onto the cover happened merely 12 hours before the planned announcement of the single. The inclusion first came to mind when Hollinsworth listened to the live version of the song on the live album, I Am... World Tour. He had stated that "the fact that 'You Oughta Know' was included on the tour felt like a continuation of the song" and that he "wanted to be able to tell the whole story.' The decision to record "You Oughta Know" as part of his own rendition of "If I Were a Boy" garnered mixed reception from members of the team who worked on the mastering of the EP, stating it was much too sudden and unfamiliar for an artist to release a different version of a song included in the tracklist. Hollinsworth's strong will prevailed, and he went on to record and remaster the cover single-handedly. Also, the release of the single, which was planned on June 6, was pulled back another two days to be released on June 8.

On June 8, 2014, the song was officially submitted to the Hot Digital Songs chart. The song debuted with moderate success, debuting at number 37 with 65,000 downloads.

Lyrics:

If I were a boy even just for one day
I'd roll out of bed in the morning
And throw on what I wanted and go

Drink beer with the guys
And chase after girls
I'd kick it with who I wanted
And I'd never get confronted for it
'Cause they'd stick up for me

If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man

I'd listen to her
'Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
'Cause you've taking her for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

If I were a boy
I would turn off my phone
Tell everyone it's broken
So they'd think that I was sleeping alone, yeah right

I'd put myself first
And make the rules as I go
'Cause I know that she'd be faithful
Waiting for me to come home
To come home, to come home, to come home

It's a little too late for you to come back
Say it's just a mistake, think I'd forgive you like that
If you thought I would wait for you, you thought wrong

I want you to know that I'm happy for you
And I want nothing but the best for you both
Another version of me, Mr. Duplicity
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face, how quickly I was replaced
Baby, were you thinking of me when you f*** her?

'Cause the love that you gave, that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me until you died
Till you died, but you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross you bear when you did that
You, you, you oughta know

But you're just a boy
Baby, you don't understand
Until you lose the one you wanted
'Cause you've taken her for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

Ooc: Okay, you can't just post lyrics from actual artists. That's not the point of this forum...

Title: Broken-Hearted Girl
Artist: Reese Hollinsworth
Release date: June 8, 2014
Length: 4:38
Formats: Compact disc, digital download
Genre: Pop
Label: Independently released
Writers: Kenneth Edmonds, Mikkel Storleer Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, Beyoncé Knowles
Producers: Stargate, Beyoncé Knowles

Reese Hollinsworth's rendition of American recording artist Beyoncé Knowles' "Broken-Hearted Girl" is a song which was recorded for and featured in Hollinsworth's debut EP, In Hiding... (1 of 2). Written by Knowles, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, and the production duo Stargate, it was initially a classic rhythm and blues song until Babyface changed the arrangement and chords. The track appears on the deluxe edition of In Hiding... (1 of 2), which consist of songs from albums B'Day and I Am... Sasha Fierce, both of which recorded by Knowles. On the single "If I Were a Boy/You Oughta Know," the track appears as one of two b-sides which include on the single, which support the theme of heartbreak in the main song. It is a midtempo pop ballad accompanied by piano, strings, and drums. The lyrics describe heartache and the insecurities of love.

"Broken-Hearted Girl" is a midtempo pop ballad with an emo-soul texture. Hollinsworth's vocals are accompanied by strings, a drum machine beat and a cascading melancholy piano that opens the song. The ballad has a Dm–B♭–F(add9)–F–C/E chord progression and a verse-chorus structure. Hollinsworth sings the introduction in a low vocal register that heightens his vocal power; in the song, his vocals range from F4 to F6. The lyrics of "Broken-Hearted Girl" depict a woman's insecurities of love and her fear of the downsides of love. The protagonist sings about heartache, and the possibility of a breakup due to the decline of her relationship with an unfaithful lover. She wishes that she did not have to experience this emotional hurt. She accepts that her feelings toward her lover are too strong, and that she does not have the courage to break things off; thus the decision to fight for her love was made, while singing emotively: "I don't want a broken heart / And I don't wanna play the broken-hearted girl." Once more, the usage of pronouns in the song is put into question, as it is unsure whether Hollinsworth considers himself a woman genuinely or it is a "marketing trick" to garner sales. In the end of the song, the woman gains confidence, and towards the end of the song, she wants to spend her life with her lover despite the previous letdowns.

Lyrics:

You're everything I thought you never were
And nothing like I thought you could have been
But still you live inside of me,
So tell me how is that?

You're the only one I wish I could forget
The only one I love to not forgive
And though you break my heart,
You're the only one

And though there are times when I hate you
'Cause I can't erase
The times that you hurt me and put tears on my face
And even now, while I hate you,
It pains me to say
I know I'll be there at the end of the day

I don't wanna be without you, babe
I don't want a broken heart
Don't wanna take a breath without you, babe
I don't wanna play that part
I know that I love you, but let me just say
I don't wanna love you in no kind of way, no no
I don't want a broken heart
I don't wanna play the broken-hearted girl
No, no, no broken-hearted girl
I'm no broken-hearted girl

There's something that I feel I need to say
But up til' now I've always been afraid
That you would never come around
And still I wanna put this out

You say you've got the most respect for me
But, sometimes I feel you're not deserving of me
And still, you're in my heart
But you're the only one

And yes, there are times when I hate you,
But I don't complain
'Cause I've been afraid that you would walk away
Oh, but now I don't hate you
I'm happy to say
That I will be there at the end of the day

I don't wanna be without you, babe
I don't want a broken heart
Don't wanna take a breath without you, babe
I don't wanna play that part
I know that I love you, but let me just say
I don't wanna love you in no kind of way, no no
I don't want a broken heart
I don't wanna play the broken-hearted girl
No, no, no broken-hearted girl

Now I'm at a place I thought I'd never be, ooh
I'm living in a world that's all about you and me, yeah
Ain't gotta be afraid, my broken heart is free
To spread my wings and fly away, away with you..., yeah, yeah, yeah

I don't wanna be without my baby
I don't want a broken heart
Don't wanna take a breath without my baby
I don't wanna play that part
I know that I love you, but let me just say
I don't wanna love you in no kind of way, no no
I don't want a broken heart
I don't wanna play the broken-hearted girl
No, no, no broken-hearted girl
Broken-hearted girl
No, no, no broken-hearted girl

No broken-hearted girl
