"Bounce" is a song by British singer-songwriter Mercedes Payne, from her currently untitled debut studio album which is set for a late 2014 release. The songs serves as Payne's official debut single following the release of the promotional track, "Shine On", in 2012 which was released via Hot Eye Records. After the closure of H.E.R, Payne struggled to find a new record deal and eventually all of the work she created with her former label became property of the owners. The song was written by Mercedes Payne and British producer/rapper, Deneil, who also handled the production of the track. "Bounce" will be released independently on 31st August 2014.

Musically, "Bounce" is a snap, trap song which critics have called a 'smooth transition' and 'natural progression' from Payne's previous R&B influenced work, using 'Shine On' and other earlier leaked tracks such as 'Hungover' and 'Kiss The Dirt' as comparisons. The single combines a mix of a sporadic trap influenced beat throughout the verse with a clapping chorus technique. Payne combines a mixture of vocal techniques all through the track, using a snarling, half spoken/half sung delivery in the verses and smooth, sultry vocals in the chorus which build up before morphing into vocal belts to coincide with the escalating of the clapping. The original version of the song featured a rap from Deneil after the first chorus but Khan requested to be removed from the track as he felt that the song is very personal to Mercedes and should be "100% hers".

Lyrically, the single is about overcoming the comments and unwarranted hatred that comes from negative people and realising how pathetic they really are. The lyrics narrate the process of conquering the negativity. The verses describe some of the things that the "haters" have said and done, the pre-chorus states that Payne has had enough and is going to take a stand while the chorus shows her speaking her mind before the bridge declares that she is moving on and finding hilarity within the situation.

"From the moment I announced my signing and did my first ever interview I was receiving unnecessary heat. I was being called a Stephanie Fierce wannabe and a cheap, supermarket version of Tisha Jackson. Even when I premiered the promo track "Shine On" I was still receiving those comments but when the song became an unexpected giant on the radio and charted in the top 3 on the Airplay Charts all of a sudden everyone else was like 'YAASSSSSS'. However, when I took a step back and eventually lost my deal all of those people turned on me again because I was no longer cool and according to them I was a flop. It pisses me off to see that so many people will see any small opportunity to point the finger and hate. When I was 'hot', they couldn't get enough but when I stepped away they didn't have a nice thing to say and I was just irrelevant. I let a lot of that get to me and I felt pressured to do something to please everyone but after some time I was just like fuck it! I'll do things the way I want to and in my own time. I came back with this track because not only is it a middle finger to all the keyboard warriors an the band-wagoners with no loyalty at all, it's also very catchy with a big chorus and that's what I wanted for my lead single. The lyrics can also apply to anyone who feels the need to tell some idiots to fuck off. I didn't make my personal situation that explicit in the lyrics so it can mean almost anything. It's one of those fun, let it all go songs that I just want to chant with the crowd when I'm performing or sing on a drunken night out with the girls. I'd say that this represents the album, not lyrically, but in a sonic aspect. It packs a punch and it has quite a dark sounding production and there's a lot of that throughout the record."
