 1. Epic Fail 2. Standing Against A Wall 3. Hope (Bikki's Song) Bikki The Band is - Bikitha Katy-Soph Hetestein (vocals, all tracks) Nick Biggs (drums, tracks 2 & 3) Somerset Bissell (bass, track 3) Damien Comyns (piano, track 1) Joshua Ginger Firecracker (vocals, track 3) Roxana Katraba Firecracker (guitar, track 3) Dante Helyer (guitar, tracks 1 & 3)
Tracks 1 & 2 by Bikki; track 3 by The Blackout. Recorded at The Dorc. Produced by Lukey Comatose. So, you pick up a single called "Epic Fail", by an artist best known for her 'Jimki/Bikoshy' love triangle and being naked on YouTube with Raven Comatose. (Oh yeh, and coming back from the dead, but we'll let that one lie. Bad pun intended.) Expecting something totally tongue-in-cheek, right? Jokey, catchy single for her comeback?
You expected wrong. Titles can be deceiving. "Epic Fail" is as haunting as Bikki herself. Ghostly and beautiful, this is a tear-jerker. Four minutes of big words about the girl whose wish didn't come true, whose every way out ends in a locked door. This is hard to pull off, but this is Bikki we're talking about, the most talented wordsmith in music since Conor Oberst. In fact, if a girl with a very deep and slightly dodgy voice sang Bright Eyes, this would be it. And even with jokers Damien and Dan as her only additional band members, the mood isn't pushed up. These guys are going to be brilliant in Moronic Changeling.
Bikki doesn't say what the wish is. It may be many wishes, or just one - but one thing's for sure, it's something she needed help with. She bluntly addresses her out-and-out selfishness in the hook, changing the words and tone of her voice from ordering people around to reflecting and apologising within seconds. Though not everyone can relate to Bikki and her abstract 'epic fail', anyone who's ever been selfish and felt bad about it (and that's most people) can relate to this.
"Standing Against A Wall", featuring just Bikki and the wonderful Nick Biggs, is a total contrast. This is an upbeat pop track with a drumbeat to die for, reminiscent of "Oh No! Not Them Again!" era Moronic Changeling. Bikki's voice has heightened, sounding like a pop princess without a care in the world, singing about how she's - well, standing against a wall. What's with the happy clappy trippy change? Where's the Bikkiness .... oh, there we go. Still sounding like she's doing a toothy smile as she sings, she's still looking at the bright and beautiful sun and the lovely day, while she's smashing her brains out against the wall. I'm guessing her death influenced this. That or Nick's input. Or both.
Finally, we have "Hope (Bikki's Song)". It sounds exactly like a cover version of "Hope (Scream It Out Loud)" by The Blackout, because that's what it is. Bikki and Joshy are the musical match of the millennium, and it was an 'epic fail' for her not to include Joshy on the single. Overall, this is a strong cover.
I'm not sure what to make of this. Full marks for the songs, but being brutally honest Bikz, a little autotune wouldn't kill you, and if it did, you'd know what to do.-Cayla Hotline |
