Scott remained stock still, as he looked over at Gia, waiting for what she was going to say. At that moment, she just looked shocked and deeply hurt, but he knew that there must be far more still to come from her. There was no way that she would just let this go, there was no way that a girl like Gia would just cry or run away, no, he knew full well that the storm was definitely still to come. And what was even worse was that he was more than aware that he fully deserved it. As he stood there in the moments immediately following his wife's bursting into the room, his thoughts turned to his guilt. He looked down at Gia's now swollen stomach, and his thoughts turned to his unborn child, his wife, Sophie, everything. He was almost struck by a wall of grief, was this really going to be the end of the family he had longed for for so long?
And beneath the sadness came the waves of disgust he felt towards himself at that very moment. He couldn't believe that he had done this, and it was like he was now suddenly seeing the light, like all of a sudden he was aware that he had been doing wrong for the past months. At the time, it had felt so right that he had managed to push the guilt and the conscience to the back of his mind, at least for long enough to sleep with Arianna. But now, now it all just felt so very wrong.
Scott looked up again as he sensed that Gia was stepping closer to him. He heard the sigh escape her lips, the first noise she had made since entering the room, and it almost broke his heart, as if Gia speaking suddenly made the reality of her being there set in. When she spoke, he had to bite his bottom lip to stop himself from bursting into tears, and as she questioned him over the reasons he had been staying at work, he actually toyed with the idea of lying to her. He didn't want to, but the survival part of his brain told him that to lie was the only way out of this situation, and that there was always the chance she would believe him. But the realist, the rational side of his brain, took over, telling him that if nothing else, Gia deserved the truth now. If that was all that he could give her, then she deserved to know the truth. He opened his mouth to speak, and felt his voice tremble. He knew this was going to be a struggle to even speak to her now. "Gi....I'-I'm sorry." It was all that he could say at first, and he wanted it to be enough , but not even the ridiculous portion of his brain that had told him to lie would have thought that feasible. He then stood up straight and tried to gather his thoughts. "It was never supposed to happen," he said slowly. "I know, it's not even an excuse, nothing excuses this, but it's the truth." He looked at her again, and immediately picked up the disdain that Gia had for him in her eyes. At the same time, he saw hurt, and he saw tears gather in her eyes. This is what he had done to her, he had hurt the woman who had given him everything he had ever dreamed of.
As he saw Gia's eyes flicker to where Arianna now stood behind him, he suddenly realised that the redhead had yet to leave the room. In all of the confusion and drama, he had almost forgotten that she was still there. He saw Gia glare at her, and he wanted to speak. None of this was Arianna's fault. She wasn't the one who was cheating on someone. Sure, she had known that Scott was married, or at least he assumed that she had. It had been almost an unwritten rule that neither of them mention his marriage, he assumed so that guilt wasn't a constant factor between them. He wanted to tell Gia to leave her alone, but how awful would that sound? That would surely be the end of his marriage if he did.
When she walked towards him, Scott braced himself for the hit he was sure was about to be delivered by his wife, but it never came. Instead, she just shoved him to the side, as if he no longer meant anything, and made a beeline for Arianna. As her open palm came down hard on Arianna's face, Scott felt terrible. He grabbed Gia by the upper arms gently but firmly and turned her towards him. "If you have to hit anyone, hit me." He looked at her, tears rolling down his face. "It's not her fault. Hit me Gia."
At that point, Scott knew how Gia hated him. After all they had been through, he had done the worst thing imaginable to her. And he could see every tiny bit of pain in her eyes. |
