To be fair, that's how it should be. You both have massive populations and top facilities. Plus one of the countries has really hard training...dare I say "regimes"?

Little countries like us have no chance of ever hitting the top of the medal table.

We came 3rd 4 years ago though, which, considering our size and general apathy, isn't that bad at all.

We were 4th man. A long way behind 3rd lol. We'll never break the US, China and Russia. Physically impossible, as we just don't have enough people.

Really? Ah, I thought we came 3rd. Still, that's not bad at all. We beat a load of countries bigger than us.

My thought is, if you're good you're good. It shouldn't matter where you're from. Sometimes a person doesn't need all the facilities and stuff.

Yeah, but facilities matter a hell of a lot more than you'd think. If you don't have a 50m pool to swim in and have to train in a 25m it makes all the difference. I mean look at India, biggest population on earth, but not near the top of medal tables because there are little to no good facilities outside Delhi.

good facilities don't matter to get good.... but when its the world stage and your talking 10ths of a second, it starts to matter one hell of a lot
I hate it when people see me at the supermarket and they are like:
Hey, what are you doing here?
and im just like:
Oh you know, hunting elephants

In certain sports that is. If we're talking about combat orientated sports, lack of facilities raise some of our best fighters.

my argument is quite simple... if facilities and preperation did not matter then year on year atheletes would not be improving and world/ olympic records being beaten..

The growth of professionalism makes a huge difference too tbh. The fact that Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte can swim for 8 hours a day makes a huge difference compared to the days when they were all amateurs.

Some people don't even train that much. Michael Phelps went days without training for his races and still managed to win, which goes along with my philosophy; If you're good, you're good.

Well yeah, there are the occasional freaks like Phelps who can get by without training because they are naturally awesome; but the vast majority of those people need to train for a crazy amount of hours every day.

Lol yes, those freaks prove me right thought. Small countries, too, can also have these freaks...it's not impossible.

Yup, which is why there will be an occasional swimming gold for the likes of Kazakhstan out of nowhere. They are far fewer than the athletes who train for years and hours every day though.

I'm ashamed of Russia's lack of golds. Then again, last olympics we only had about 3 after the first week, and ended with like 30.
