ACTS OF HATE - PURE CANADIAN METAL

BIOGRAPHY
Formed in late 2011 in Toronto by vocalist Sam Fischer, guitarists Raj Gill and Derrick Brown, drummer Phil Reinhardt and bassist Ash Williams, Acts of Hate burst onto the local scene by playing as many local shows as they could. In January 2012, the band dissolved, leaving only Sam to carry on the band's legacy. After a few lineup changes, the band formed what's now its first solid lineup - Sam (Vocals and Lyrics) Jeff (Bass) Tony and Rob (Guitars) and Neil (Drums and Percussion.) Unfortunately, in early 2013, Jeff and Rob left the band; Jeff being fired for drug abuse and Rob leaving for personal issues. Despite losing two comrades and friends, they have gained two more in guitarist Scott Ramsay and bassist Jay Adler. Acts of Hate has proven time and time again that they are a force to be reckoned with.

ACTS OF HATE - LIVE AT THE BOVINE SEX CLUB IN TORONTO
The venue was packed. Wall to wall, the Bovine Sex Club was filled with rowdy looking misfits who were ready for the show. They had been there a good hour, listening to some other local bands, occasionally moshing or slam dancing, but they were about to see what they were really waiting for. There was no real introduction, Acts of Hate appeared from the back room and nudged their way through the crowd and to the tiny stage, where Nick's drums were already set up. The crowd cheered loudly, and every band member's face was split with a wide grin from their warm reception. This was it, the first show with the new line up. They had rehearsed for weeks prior, and Sam was hoping it would work out. Jeffrey and Kyle picked up their guitars and made sure they were tuned to their ball-crushingly low drop C. Neil was nervous. His first show with Acts of Hate, he was worried about fucking up. He plucked the strings of his bass a couple times, then looked out at the crowd. The amount of people was unreal. Sam had the mic and could tell this was it. It was happening. He pulled it to his mouth and spoke; "We are Acts of Hate, and we want you to fuck this place up!"

SONG 1 - UNFURLED BEFORE ME

The song began with a fast drum roll from Nick, followed by an immediate fast guitar riff from Jeffrey and Kyle. The entire band came to life as the fast paced riffage of the song induced headbanging. Sam uttered a low, ominous growl into the mic before tipping the stand over and joining the band in a simultaneous headbanging/squatting thing. The band had rehearsed this song for weeks before the show and were surprisingly tight, and Sam felt the chemistry. His vocals started out a little shaky; the high pitched screams a little off key. Sam caught that and continued for the rest of the song only using his low growls, which were perfect. The crowd, reserved before, erupted into a singular being; moshing and slam dancing to their hearts content. There looked to be no injuries, everyone was enjoying themselves. As the song slowed down, and Sam tried to delve into his high vocals, he could tell his highs weren't going to be too great tonight. As if he could sense it, Jeffrey stepped up to the second mic stand and provided backing growls. After a chaotic breakdown that caused the crowd to erupt, the song came to an end as Sam yelled "Thank you so fucking much!"

SONG 2 - A DAY IN BLACK

Almost instantly after the end of "Unfurled Before Me", Jeffrey launched into the slow, melodic riff of their second song as Kyle chugged along to the rhythm in the background. They were joined by Neil who's bass provided a rumbling, strong foundation. The song chugged along at a medium tempo as Sam contributed his growls. His voice was doing better and he could almost nail every high scream. Halfway through, the song stopped as Jeff and Kyle began playing slow, melodic riffs that complimented each other, only to have the song shift back into the regular tempo with Nick's thundering double bass complimenting everything. As the song ended in a breakdown, Sam's vocals really shone through as he ended with a monstrous shriek.

SONG 3 - ENTITIES

The song started slowly, with a single strum of Jeff's guitar, until the band kicked it into double time as the blisteringly fast double bass kicks started and Sam began to belt out the lyrics at breakneck speed. Kyle's chugging in the song was backed by Jeffrey's fast sweep picking; and as always Neil held down the low end of the band. As the breakdown started, Sam walked into the crowd, embracing fans for hugs and high fives. As Jeff began to solo, Sam shouted; "Jeff Koenig on lead guitar everybody! Let's see this place go insane!" The song slowed to a mid tempo chug-fest as Sam gave an extremely powerful vocal performance, and as the song ended Jeff and Kyle held their notes as the song began to segue into the fourth song, Sentenced to Hang.

SONG 4 - SENTENCED TO HANG

Carried on from the last song, Entities, the song starts slowly as Sam utters a few low grunts, before it speeds up, Kyle's chugging complimenting a stacatto guitar riff from Jeff. As the song slows down, the band headbangs furiously and Sam speaks up again; "Bang your heads like we do! Go fucking crazy!". Once again, the song returns to its fast pace and ends as it started with a slower, melodic riff.

SONG 5 - SMOKE ON THE WATER (DEEP PURPLE COVER)

The band is clearly fatigued from the set, and Sam sips from a bottle of beer before he turns to confront the crowd. "Toronto! It's been really great playing for you guys tonight, and we want to thank all of you for coming out. This is fucking awesome and we love doing what we do. For this last song, I want to see a fucking circle pit, I don't care how small this room is!". As Sam finishes, Jeff starts in on a familiar - almsot cliche - guitar riff. The crowd instantly recognizes the song and begins to freak out. As per requested, they form a circle pit that encompasses almost the entire floor of the club. As the song built up, Sam offered his own take on the classic song's vocals - deep, harsh growls of "WE ALL WENT DOWN TO MONTREAUX!" - and the place lit up. Sam changed the lyrics slightly, in the first verse instead of "Frank Zappa and the Mothers" he says "Deftones and Devildriver". As they got to the anthemic chorus, the crowd sang along and Sam felt the unity in the room. After the second verse and chorus, Jeffrey launched into an intricate shred-style solo, going on to last a couple minutes as the band continued backing him up and the crowd began clapping in time to the beat. As the song reached the end, the band kept playing, repeating the chorus several times before the song melted into chaos, every instrument being played frenetically and frenzily; Jeff and Kyle were soloing, Neil was digging in, and Nick broke out a thunderous drum solo as the song became chaos. Finally, Sam yelled into the mic "Thank you all so much! We're Acts of Hate and we love you all! Catch us this summer on the Carnival of Sounds tour! We fucking love you! Peace!" and the band strode offstage into the crowd where they embraced their fans like old friends.

MODERN DAY MONSTERS - THE LYRICS

TRACK 1 - ROOTS (SEPULTURA COVER)

Description: The cover of Sepultura's classic groove metal anthem stays very true to the original albeit a lower, more menacing sound and the vocals.

LYRICS:

Roots bloody roots
Roots bloody roots
Roots bloody roots
Roots bloody
I believe in our fate
We don't need to fake
It's all we wanna be
Watch me freak
I say we're growing every day
Getting stronger in every way
I'll take you to a place where we shall find our
Roots bloody roots
Roots bloody roots
Roots bloody roots
Roots bloody roots
Rain bring me the strength to get to another day
And all I want to see
Set us free
Why can't you see?
Can't you feel this is real?
I pray we don't need to change our ways to be saved
That all we wanna be
Watch us freak

TRACK 2 - MAULED
DESCRIPTION: A fast paced and abrasive deathcore song, not alot more to say.
LYRICS:

your cranium is destroyed
with blunt force trauma
performed lobotomy
without anasthesia
shattered fragments of skull
strewn across the floor
my macabre laboratory
is ready for more
another specimen
struggles under restraint
i reinforce the chains
and conduct pressure tests
split like watermelons
spilled cranial fluid
congeals on the floor
like morbid oatmeal
insane visions appear
facelift with a mallet
once i am done with you
your identity is gone

TRACK 3 - IMMOLATED
DESCRIPTION: Another groovy deathcore tune, this time with less generic chugging riffs, the main riff being fast and complex. Less breakdown, more substance. Another example of Sam's grisly and morbid lyrics.
LYRICS:

hands tied behind your back
losing circulation in your limbs
fighting the gag reflex
you begin to come to
gasoline stench fills your nostrils
as you realize what you have done
you are soaked to the core
immolation soon to follow

first your hair burns
the lifeless husk crumbles
follicles aflame
you're turning to ashes
your blood begins to boil
as you die from the inside out
nobody can hear you
nobody will save you

you shook with trepidation
as you see me strike the match
thoroughly soaked
the flame catches fast
set ablaze for perpetuating lies
behind your face a monster in disguise
disgusting filth, your stench is grotesque
today ends with your demise

hands tied behind your back
losing circulation in your limbs
fighting the gag reflex
you begin to come to
gasoline stench fills your nostrils
as you realize what you have done
you are soaked to the core
immolation soon to follow

your existence disgusts me
your stain will be erased
the foul essence of your soul
dissapears with the purity of flame

hands tied behind your back
losing circulation in your limbs
fighting the gag reflex
you begin to come to
gasoline stench fills your nostrils
as you realize what you have done
you are soaked to the core
immolation soon to follow

TRACK 4 - GREEN
DESCRIPTION: Carries more of a groove-metal influence, no breakdown at all. The lyrics depart from the tradition of "brutal" and macabre visions Sam is known for, and touches on the subjects of economy, religion and hypocrisy.
LYRICS:

you put your faith in a marionette
money puppet in papal robes
disembowls himself with dollar bills
crucified on a cross of gold

the dollar devil slowly corrodes
chews its way through flesh and bone
bubbling black excess drilled from holes
overflowing your life and home

i am the all-encompassing
pseudo-sacred snake of christ
i'm painted cash-currency green
ATM eucharist

the road to hell is paved with good intentions
the bones of businesses, shoddy investments
a world where humanity is barely seen
there's no room for kindness when you bleed green

jet fuel and dynamite
nobody gets out of here alive
sift through the nickels, quarters and dimes
nobody leaves this place alive

TRACK 5 - IDOLS
DESCRIPTION: A fast-tempo chugfest penned by Sam during his high school days. The song is about religion and Sam's disgust for people who use it to exalt themselves.
LYRICS:

worthless idolatry aside i still find
you despicable as a person
spreading lies with lips of deceit
polluting intellect with superstition
followers of rituals
the bane of modern society
our worlds crumble yet
you refuse to accept
unbending truth and humility
removed from your equasion
i try to accept it but i always find
your faith is just abscence of mind

put all your trust in invisible icons
they are dead to me
kneel down before your worthless god
and know that he has betrayed you
chemistry, physics, psychology
all proven and true
blind allegiance to shadow puppets
is whats important to you

TRACK 6 - RAIN OF RAPE
DESCRIPTION: A slow, brutal and dark song that has an extremely eerie and macabre vibe to it. The song was originally a poem but at the insistence of the other members it has been turned into a very unique song. Lyrically, Sam states that "it works as a poem better because it is actually an english translation of a song by japanese band Dir en Grey. I thought I would be able to tackle the song and bring the genius of the original japanese lyrics to an english speaking audience. So yeah, it's not mine, but we made it ours, ya know? as far as the meaning of it goes....well, that's really up to you. it's not in black and white. it's subtle, and i like it like that. "
LYRICS:

Inside the well
Confinement
Dirt filling up
Human rights
Pleasure
God's child
Sadism
Near the lake
Thirst in the mouth
Tongue
Cement
Rust
Saliva
Infection
Rope
Slum
Castration
Tearing of the flesh
Bitter honey
Rain of Violation
Strangulation
Human

TRACK 7 - SMOKE ON THE WATER (DEEP PURPLE COVER)
DESCRIPTION: A pretty standard death metal cover of the Deep Purple classic. Chugs along rather niceley. Some small lyrical changes included.
LYRICS:

We all came from Toronto,
On the Lakes, the eastcoast shoreline.
To make records with a mobile,
We didn't have much time.
Cannibal Corpse and Deicide, yeah,
Were at the best place around,
But some stupid with a flare gun,
Burned the place to the ground.
Smoke on the water and fire in the sky.
Smoke on the water...
They burned down the gambling house,
It died with an awful sound.
Some fucking fuck was running in and out,
Pulling kids out the ground.
When it all was over,
We had to find another place.
But Swiss time was running out,
It seemed that we would lose the race.
Smoke on the water and fire in the sky.
Smoke on the water...

We ended up at the Grand Hotel.
It was empty cold and bare.
But with those hosers just outside,
Making our music there.
With a few red lights, a few old beds,
We made a place to sweat.
No matter what we get out of this,
I know I know we'll never forget.
Smoke on the water and fire in the sky.
Smoke on the water...

All lyrics written by Sam Fischer except for Roots (written by Sepultura) and Smoke on the Water (written by Deep Purple)
Produced by Sam Fischer and Jeff Koenig

Matt: Canadian metal? That means like instead of mosh pits you have tea parties, your songs are censored down so most of it is just "eh", you turn down the volume for any passing old folks or people with sensitive ears, and if someone gets hurt in the crowd the prime minister comes to take him/her to the hospital and everyone else in the crowd pitches in the cash to get the injured person help? Yeah that seems about right. Party hard.

Scott RH: Matt Collins: Wanker Extraordinaire? What a ridiculously xenophobic load of nonsense to come out with. Metal comes from Canada often and hard. Comeback Kid, Cancer Bats and many many others will tear shit up in the pit on a regular basis. Plus, you might have hit a nerve given that my wife is Canadian. I am a big Reported Failure fan, but I can't help but think perhaps you are trying a leeeeettle too hard to be controversial here. Calm it down, dude; let people grow and have chance.....eh? ;)

Kevin: Hey, if you can thrash, you can thrash, it don't matter where you come from, where you been, or where you're going as long as you know how to bring the squeedlies and the meedlies then you're ok in my book.

Derrick: TROGDOR!!!!

Anthony: All the sudden I have a strange urge to about burninating the peasants and countryside.

John: *sings to the rhythm of O, Canada* O, Canada, my not so native land, I don't know this song but bring your guns and ham!

Jeremy: *shakes his head at John* I'm sorry, he's a moron. *hits John in the head with a bat, knocking him out* that should keep him quiet.

Jeff: Typical Americans.
Kyle: Hey, don't knock America either. They have all the good food. Like...Vanilla Coke. I want some fucking vanilla coke.
Neil: Stupid canada! Not having vanilla coke!!
Sam: Vanilla Coke aside, I'm a weee bit starstuck that Scott RH is defending us.
Jeff: Yeah. And the guys from Erin's silence. At least there'll be another band on the Carnival of Sounds lineup who aren't total cocks.
Neil: You guys are overlooking the big picture here....WHY CAN'T WE HAVE VANILLA COKE IN CANADA!!??

Anthony: The same reason we can't have Mountees! Wait, why can't we have Mountees?
Kevin: I don't know, are those the guys with the gigantic chimney cleaner hats?
Jeremy: No, that's the Queen's guards.
Kevin: Gotcha, so they're the one with the flying monkeys.
Jeremy: No, that's the wicked witch of the west.
Derrick: I'm so confused now...let's just play some metal and enjoy our Vanilla Coke before Acts of Hate starts WW3 by invading Minnesota for Vanilla Coke.
Anthony: Wouldn't we just end up rebelling and bring back the Confederacy then?
Kevin: He does have a point.
Derrick: Nevermind, where the hell is John? *phone rings, Jeremy answers*
Jeremy: Guys, it's John he claims he's been kidnapped by a 4 yr. old dressed as a Mountee.
Anthony: Anyway, we can't wait to tour with you guys.

Broke a string at last night's show. Too lazy to go to Tom Lee to buy more. Story of my life. But, on a lighter note, here's the setlist from that show. If you missed it, you can just pretend you were there.
- Kyle

SETLIST:
1. Roots (Sepultura Cover)
2. Unfurled Before Me
3. Immolated
4. Green
5. Mauled
6. Idols
7. Rain of Rape

Neil: We should write a song about poutine.
Jeff: What? that's not metal.
Neil: Yes it is! we can call it...."scalded with gravy" or "face melted with cheese curds"
Sam: I don't think we're going to do that.

Another new song!! No need to thank us. -Sam

SLAVES OF SELF-DESTRUCTION
Description: Another toned down song with a more metalcore feel and a focus on melody. Clean vocals are in bold.

a disposition to foolishness passed down generations
poisoning your temple from within
until you realize that you are a slave
your will bends you to sin

the more you ingest the less you protest
until you are totally consumed

you're a slave, the substance owns you
you're not yourself
until you break free of what controls you
you act like someone else

the more you ingest the less you protest
until you are totally consumed

you're a slave, the substance owns you
you're not yourself
until you break free of what controls you
you act like someone else

drink, drank, drunk
drink, drank, drunk
drink, drank, drunk
drink, drank, drunk
