Biography:
Insolent Paradox is a proggressive metal band from Mexico, they have released 4 full-length albums.
Formed by 2 friends (Hector Apreza and Jose Lugo) in Cuernavaca, Mexico after Hector was kicked of his old band, they started playing with some session musicians, after realizing they needed a full-time singer they contacted a friend who played with them in some of their old bands, Cristian Lamberg a singer with impressive skills, he recommended them to a rhythm guitarist named Dani Marquez. About 2 months after the first incarnation of the band was formed, Cristian tragically died on a bus accident. Dani decided to take over vocal-work, then a drummer named Erik answered to a newspaper ad and the current lineup was completed, few weeks after their first release (self-titled) they signed to Negative Records, they have continued to tour, record, and release, they have also achieved #1 records on the US and South America and several top-10 releases in Canada and the UK. Jose Lugo formed a jazz fusion band named Oceans shortly after the release of 'Memories, Paradox's second album. After Memories the band refined their music and released the conceptual album Son, after a long tour along Negative Records's major acts the band went into the studio to record Thoughtcrime, featuring a larger number of influences. After that record they untied from Negative Records to form Seagull Recordings. In which they released Human, which experiments even more influences than their previous releases.

Insolent Paradox

The band's debut, and a good one, when the band's first lead singer passed, he left the band with a legacy of gory lyrics and mainly songs built of speed, technical yes, but not proggressive, the band was ok with it because the high-pitched vocals coming from Lamberg really fitted this death-thrash style the band had at the point, but when Dani Marquez came in the vocals, with a very limited voice compared to Cristian Lamberg, they knew they had to rebuild the band's sound, and they did to a point. You may not consider it a good thing entirely, at some points it feels like they are really trying to get rid of that deathrash style, but in the end it becomes an amazing product, one of it's main issues is that it looks like it's separated on a before/after Cristian Lamberg. On this Hector comments "We did modified our sound mainly because me and Jose have been on some more proggressive bands and when we formed this it wasnt even a full-time band, it was just a way to make heavier music, we alternated with other local groups we were in, then we realized we could write our stuff in full freedom here, and we started leaning towards prog, but then Cristian came in and he wanted this sound which fitted what we were doing before, when he passed away we realized that without his talent we would have suffocated on such a crowded scene, so we went prog again which fits Dani's voice". In so many ways he's right lets see what he says about the so criticized tracklist. "Yes, it was kind of chronological (laughs) but mainly because we didnt wanted to place a brutal thrash song like Rot Again, next to proggy stuff like Evolution or Manifesto". So in conclusion this record is a good but not great record, with amazing songs but they wanted to achieve everything with this record, not to get an inch away from the roots but to sound far more proggressive than before, still most of the people will pick this over their demos anyday, on one certain thing the art work is amazing

Memories

UserPostedImage

Memories is a lot darker than its predecesor from the cover, the problem with the self titled indepedent release from this band was mainly that they couldnt get their ideas quite together, so the album was pretty irregular on the sound, it seems impossible to merge two genres without leaning almost entirely to one, this is still the problem with Insolent Paradox and the prog-thrash genre in general is that they are either thrash bands with heavy proggressive influence or viceversa, so it seems more of a subgenre than a genre itself, so most of the bands in the middle are too prog to thrash fans and too heavy to prog fans, so they tend to develope a fancult without ever getting exposure out of this cult, not even on metal underground, less on mainstream culture, this may not apply to Paradox, since they have even had a #1 record in the States and some other high charts across the globe, but this could be temporary, with such a demanding industry probably they will fade into underground or simply dissapear. Which is shame because it's such a great band, but they are always lacking something on their albums as a whole, it mainly seems as a compilation at times, maybe 3-4 songs are pretty well tied, and well this one has a better track order, music and recording, still it seems like they improved their sound without really changing it at all.

Probably their only album so far that fully reaches expectatives because well they werent so high, dont get me wrong Paradox is an awesome live band but when they decided to record one of their shortest concerts for their first live record, many people seemed dissapointed, from other reviews you may think that Paradox is a mediocre band, you couldnt get further form truth, is just that they as a young, extremely young band havent reached their full potential, the recording is great but it doesnt reach their actual gigs, on some other subject, with all eyes upon them, after Memories adn its great success, this live record reaching 2 million sales and their re-release of their self-titled being #1 in the US, and their second re-release coming soon, will they go the easy way and make their sound easy?, or will they continue releasing chaotic, not-organized albums?, on the other hand and I think is the best for everyone there is a chance they wont care about mainstream and try to reach their full-potential, lets hope it is this way

Can't get enough of Ocean. In particular I like 'Run', although it is practically guaranteed you'll win my vote if you are a metal musician who has the balls to put out jazz music, which tends to piss people off, but not me. Every time I write a song for Nile's Fear I try to do something like that, to make it interesting. Percussion is also exciting to see, as I use it a lot in my band's music, and it is thoroughly underated.

Yeah, we all had some kind of interest for non-metal music, Jose was just the one to get to release jazz earlier. And percussion is also quite interesting, particularly in your band, really great stuff

So it's been a long time since you heard any new material from the Paradox, well the thrash-heads will be surely satisfied by 'Steps' the first single from upcoming album, the band is only releasing this track accompanied by the remastered versions of Facing the Abyss and Perfectionist, Steps is supposed to be the opening song of this new album, it features a thrashing riff in the beginning, and then a instrumental section featuring heavy riffs, bass solos, and a guitar duel (mainly good ol' Paradox) oh and by the end it also has... keyboards played by Jose Lugo, giving it a proggy feeling after this long section vocals finally kick in, apparently they deal on the life of a small child told by a narrator (possibly and oldman), and the child himself, this kid is often ignored by his parents, an struggling couple ["drowning on his feelings, no one to share them with, vaccum as his only company"], he is rejected by other kids on his school, he is also ignored by his teachers and has no one to turn to, by the end of the song his father and his mother leave him on an orphanage ["I see their backs, they say it will be alright][alone he stands, as he always will"]. There is no solos/instrumental sections after the vocals start, Daniel Marquez, the vocalist shows an amazing range on this song, since he switches from a deep voice (almost on off), a thrash shriek (see Overkill), and some death growls. About the story, this track hints it will be following the life of the small kid, sadly only this track has been revealed so far, the b-sidess for Steps are two of the remastered songs from their previous albums.

Some of the liner notes on the single:

"we have been working on this album for a while now, the concept has been developing since before our first record, this track and many more have gone through tons of title changes, structure changes, re-writing the lyrics, etc."
Erik, drums

"the keyboard was an idea of Erik, it was to give it a more prog feeling to the song, we thought the song was too similar to what we have done previously, so we included them here, we also have some more surprises on songs but overall, it feels harder than Memories at some parts and it is far more eccletic, it has death and black metal influences, some jazz and blues, and even some industrial sounds, but overall it is still a thrash record, just probably one of the weirdest you've heard!"
Daniel, guitar/vocals

"Well, this might be our greatest album yet, it remains thrash and it include more things, it's been fun recording this, and then you have the plus of a great story"
Hector, guitar

Tracklist:
Steps 9:53
Facing the Abyss (remastered) 8:02
Perfectionist (remastered) 4:39

Review:

Well, a few metal band members have gone into jazz projects, most of these were rock oriented, a few more have created a weird blend of metal, jazz and avant-garde, Oceans stands in the middle of these, some tracks being jazz epics bordering on proggressive rock, and some more being avant-garde experimentationss, basically Insolent Paradox minus the heavy riffs, we also get to see a side of Jose Lugo deeply influenced by Jaco Pastorius and many similar jazz bassists.
We have the record divided by the tracks titled Path to Nowhere, that work mainly as intros led by Jose's bass, the first half (tracks 1-4) is quite more jazzy and instrumental, with few vocals, the best track out of this is No Number, basically an instrumental with intrincate bass lines and keyboard arrangements also with great drums, then the second part (5-10) is mainly a tornado of influences very well mixed and featuring lyrics, with jazz and avant-garde being the main ingredients, Clouds is influenced by post-punk, A Line is another jazz track in the core, mixed with 60s rock, following this there is Matter one of the best tracks definitely, it is as stated before, Paradox without the heavy metal influence, this feeling continues on the next 2 tracks, Run being a combination of this jazz/avant-garde style with a Pink Floyd feel, then there is the first single Title being a perfect epilogue for the album. From the bonus tracks Hundred Tones is easily the best, on this album as a good jazz record you can see an amazing brass section, and besides that Oceans also have a great guitar (acoustic and electric) ensemble, definitely an amazing album, recommened for everyone.

Personnel:
Jose Lugo - bass, keyboards, vocals, synthetizers, percussions
Laura Huse - vocals
Hector Apreza - guitars, saxophone
Paul Mensch - electric guitar
Tulio Leon - electric guitar
Ron Orich - piano, keyboards, organ
Edy Garcia - acoustic guitar, flute
Johnny Reed - saxophones, trumpet, trombone
Toño Romano - drums, percussion

After the incredible good reception of the hard-prog epic Steps, here it is the 2nd track from long-awaited album "Son", entitled "Hell", this single's liner notes contain much more info on the new album, but we'll get on that later, this as 'Steps' this is released with 2 of their remastered songs as b-sides, this time it's turn for Insolent Paradox and Death and Beginning from their debut album, "Hell" starts with a short-drum solo, followed immediatly by the first verse, now we find our main character in the orphanage in which he was dumped, where he has few contact with other people, he is then adopted by a family [you shall be our child, we will treat you as our own, no more pain for you little soul], and he starts becoming a part of society for first time in his life, after this short lyric section, the first solo kicks in played by Daniel, it has some optimistic feel, reminding of Rush's 2112 calm guitar section, this solo slowly fades and a heavy, full of rage solo played by Hector kicks in, then once this guitar solos are done, the song stops and a drum-lead bridge leads to a part of heavy riffing, then vocals start again, Daniel sings from the child's perspective through this second vocal section, the son's adoptive father gets fired, at first there is no big deal and they keep hope, but slowly the adoptive father becomes an alcoholic, and he starts beating his wife and the small kid, one night he arrives drunker than ever and with a gun, the child locks himself in his room, gunshots are heard, then the adoptive mother gets to his room, this time she carries the gun, he speaks to the children telling him everything will get better and they will reunite with his father in heaven, he takes him out on the street pointing at him with a gun, passing by his drunken father's corpse, police sirens are heard, the band plays the outro, after some seconds of silence we hear gunshots again, this time without being cleared who was the shooter.

Liner notes:

"we are releasing the tracks in order can actually follow the story, and this track is extremely important to the story"
Jose, bass

"Hell is splitted in two parts a slow one, and a fast one, the cliffhanger is mind-blowing, when we finished writing it, we didnt knew how to continue the story"
Erik, drums

Tracklist:
Hell 11:29
Insolent Paradox 5:05
Death and Beginning 13:07
