Bikki // live at the International Music Awards

When a fair amount of Birdie-goers have walked in, the black curtains open on the darkened stage at The Dorc, revealing Bikki’s backing band, causing a massive cheer from the crowd. The presenter walks through, wearing a loose white catsuit, made up like an angel, her pale skin and lupus ‘butterfly print’ accentuated on her face, with sparkling silver wings like those in the middle of the Birdie and a crown of black roses topping off the look.

I never promised you a ray of light.
As Bikki sings this, beginning the cover which will be the first part of her performance, a bright light comes down on her, emphasising her ‘look’ even more.
Why do you put me on a pedestal?
What appears to be a giant Birdie award comes up from the floor below, Bikki going upwards, standing upon the Birdie. She can hear a few sharp intakes of breath from the crowd, those who know Bikki and her clumsiness well – but she doesn’t fall down.

Just before the chorus starts up, the light above her goes off, along with all the lights above the band.
One thing is clear, I wear a halo.
Some gold fairy lights under the roses on Bikki’s ‘halo’ start shining brightly throughout the chorus, shining over Bikki and brightening up the stage.
I just wanna love you ....
For this bit of the chorus, Bikki’s two backing singers, Joshy Firecracker of Firecracker 47 and Raven Storme, dressed identically to Bikki, walk through the ‘Birdie’, the middle of which has been set up as a door, and start doing some ‘ecstatic dancing’ (Tim Booth style!) while Bikki sings.
At the end of the chorus, as Bikki’s head stops shining and the lights go back on, Raven picks up her guitar from the side of the stage and goes into a short solo, continuing to play through the second verse.

See me as I really am.
Behind the band, a screen turns on, showing videos of Bikki making an arse of herself, causing the crowd to laugh.
The second chorus is a repeat of the first, and after the bridge, Bikki takes a ‘leap of faith’ from her pedestal, causing more deep breaths. She grabs onto the edge of the stage, laying down on her front and starts breathing heavily in an attempt to look sexy.
I wear a halo!

Bikki stands up and starts singing again, the lights go off, and her ‘halo’, along with similar items that Joshy and Raven are wearing, light up. The song finishes, the stage lights up again, and the crowd cheers. Before leaving the stage, Joshy throws his halo into the crowd, like a frisbee. He manages to knock someone off their chair.

Joshy you prat .... I mean, erm, welcome one and all to The Dorc, and to the second International Music Awards, also known as Birdies, of 2009!

This big thing behind me is a Birdie, except the actual ones you can win are much smaller than this, but worth so much more! So many of you are up for nomination tonight, and good luck to all! Now, onward with my show, that was a cover of ‘Halo’ by Haley James Scott from One Tree Hill, next up is a song originally performed by my first real band in 2002, and released by Rekordfirma van Mouschi in 2006 – this is ‘Snow Angel’.

The room goes quiet, the band goes quiet, the curtains close, Bikki goes through the Birdie door, and Raven, now standing alone, begins to softly strum the sliding guitar chords to ‘Snow Angel’. As the words begin, Bikki comes down from the top of the stage, attached to a rope, a razor in one hand, a knife in the other.

I will not taint the world with blood, wanting to end my life is no reason to hurt myself with razor or with knife.
I will not be a grotesque puppet twirling in the breeze, no need to make a spectacle to haunt my family’s dreams.
Bikki throws both the razor and the knife through the curtains at the end of the first line, and finishes the second line by breaking away from the rope, both feet on the ground. For the next instrumental, pianist Chris Pratt, behind the curtain, joins Raven, the song still quiet but getting louder.

I will not taint my blood with drugs, for when I meet my end ....
Bikki knocks fake pills out of her pockets, stepping on them to create the beginnings of the snowy stage. As the song goes on, fake snow falls from above. The next musician to play is Moronic Changeling bassist Krista Briskett, followed by second guitarist, Emma Blunt of Divalish!, and finally the drummer, Nick of Lunatica.

I’m a snow angel (I’m a snow angel) ....
Bikki and Raven, singing lead and backing vocals respectively, open a curtain each as the main chorus of the song comes on, and walk backwards into the band. The snowstorm is getting heavy now, and is very deep covering one raised area of the stage, where Bikki chooses to lay down as she sings the last words.
Nothing left of me, just how I want – to – be.
The rest of the musicians stop, Raven sits down next to Bikki, playing the guitar ending of the song, as Bikki appears to be descending into the snow – and also, while she’s still visible, apparently dead, the ghost of her flies up from beneath her seemingly lifeless body. When she’s finished the song, Raven takes the ‘Moronic Changeling roses’ (13 black roses plus one red rose of hope) out of her halo, and lays them down on Bikki.

*real Bikki sits up*
Damn right. It isn’t about you at all, this is my show! But it isn’t, really. First of all I’d like to thank my band here, Chris, Brisky, Emma and Nick, for helping me out because I can’t play anything!
*crowd cheers – Joshy Firecracker walks back on stage*
And of course, my fellow angels – Sophy-Cat Kerry-Bishop, ghost of me, Joshy Firecracker, the evil angel who knocks people out, and especially Raven Storme, the real angel who has helped me out through the last two songs and brought me back to life. She made the poster for the IMAs, she’s got, in total, NINE nominations tonight, good luck girl, and she’ll be presenting the Icon Award later tonight as a reward for her hard work. Three cheers for Soph, Joshy and Ravenah!
*crowd cheers – the three ‘angels’ leave the stage*
But, there is one more song to go from me, in keeping with the angel theme, this last song is called ‘Halo’, it’s a poppy song written by me, and it’s much less depressing than ‘Snow Angel’, I promise. There is also one more angel to introduce ....

Chris, Brisky, Emma and Nick play ‘Halo’ by Bikki, who walks around the stage, looking down, as she sings –
Remind me what the first commandment was, thou shalt not have other Gods before me,
But every time I look around this church, engraved images everywhere I see.
The screen which previously showed videos of Bikki messing up, now shows three large, colourful stained-glass windows. The two either side depict Bikki as an angel, but the big middle window shows someone else. At the end of the first verse, Bikki picks up a broomstick and starts sweeping some of the snow away.
I’m not lazy, I do everything I can, I am crazy, I can’t change the way I am.

At the beginning of the chorus, the middle window opens and, shocking the audience, Bikki’s final angel and stained glass window star Stephanie Fierce jumps through, dressed in the same ‘angel’ outfit as Bikki and the others. The crowd cheer for her. The lights turn to a bunch of brightly coloured spotlights, similar to the colours of the stained glass. The two sing the first chorus together –
Both : Can you please take off my halo?
Bikki : This is impossible, I just can’t work this fast.
Both : Take off my halo.
Steph : I’m not infallible, my word is not the last.
Both : Take off my halo, halo ....

As Bikki sings the second verse, the windows change from the stained glass pictures into videos of Bikki accepting awards at the first IMAs. The windows then turn into front pages of ‘Hot Topic’ magazine starring Stephanie Fierce, as the two girls walk forward and sing –
Steph : I’ll be your hero if you’re looking for my help.
Bikki : I’m nothing near though if I’m trying to save myself.

The curtains close behind them and they sing the next chorus, before moving onto the bridge, singing while acting as if trying to break through the giant Birdie -
Let me in, I’m at the door, waiting to be something more,
Something less, or something new, nothing false, my heart is true ....
They walk through the Birdie-door and the curtains open again.
I’m breaking through .... take it off now!
As they sing that, drummer Nick bashes her head into her kit four times, clearly going a bit mental. Stephanie and Bikki sing the final chorus, before Bikki moves on to presenting the awards.

*the door sinks into the stage, forming a table – a stage assistant hands Bikki the first award, ready to be presented ....*
