Yes, you heard it right! Jason Smith is back in town, with a new double single. Frown Upon, an original song and its polar opposite Sunny Side Up, a cover of Agua de Annique are now available for purchase from iTunes. Jason says "I wanted one depressing song and then something to make the listener not try and kill themselves. I need their money anyway."
1. Frown Upon (3:43) (Post-Rock/ Alternative Rock)A spacey, eerie guitar plays slowly at the start of the song, shrouded beneath ambient effects that fill it with a sense of mystery. An electronic, synthesized drum then plays quietly in the background, but it is still audible enough to be heard beneath all of the sonic noise above it. Eventually, the ambient effects die down and the drums become louder. The guitar remains at a steady pace still, although that will soon change. The riff itself is sporadic and constantly changing, almost like an extremely slow solo. After this carries on for about 20 seconds or so, an actual drum and bass fly in quickly, with the guitar now playing a faster, anthemic alternative rock riff. This sets the basis for the verses of the song. Once the vocals appear, they are high-pitched and dramatic, and at the strongest they’ve ever been. The “not anymore” to “This life is love inside my head” part is a different riff, with a dark, yet funky ska-like riff being played on the rhythm guitar, and the lead guitar playing frantic, technical arpeggios. It then returns abruptly to its original state, except with the lead guitar playing the solo from the beginning, leaving the rhythm to play the riff. After that, the penultimate segment appears. For this, the whole of the song is compressed and reversed into a few seconds, before it goes into a slower, doom-like and atmospheric guitar piece. The words here are sung solemnly above it. It then cuts out into an ambient piece, with the last line being spoken over it by Jason and then a high pitched, almost screech-like laughter. This time I go into a new life,
Thinking about the ones before,
Karma, religion, it’s all true, I guess,
Since I can now experience it first hand.
I don’t care if you sing my words,
I won’t lie if you bounce along,
I seriously couldn’t care less,
About anyone other than myself.
Not anymore,
I can’t feel,
I won’t feel,
This life is love inside my head.
One who has lived life in vanity,
Must take pride in their demise too,
No hyperbole or hypocrisy.
You chose to die, in the end.
I need more now,
Just one more fix,
Then I swear I’ll be done.
Even at the time that the pebbles are being counted out, be not frightened; tell no lies; and fear not the Lord of Death.
2. Sunny Side Up (Agua de Annique cover) (3:05) (Pop Rock/ Folk Rock)What can you really say here, it’s just a cover of a song by Agua de Annique done acoustically. Sort poppy, would have probably made a better single over all. The lyrics are slightly unusual to say the least, but the music itself is done very well. As previously mentioned, not much here has changed apart from being made acoustic instead of it’s slightly rockier original version. Of course, since Anneke is a woman, Jason has to do the vocals slightly differently too. They’re done in his folky voice.Miranda takes her eggs sunny side up in the morning.
It's quiet while she eats,
But not for long before she starts talking.
She loves her music
And she prays for a nice day while she's walking.
She moves her eyes up to the sky
And calls out, "Have a nice day".
All the love she knows she learnt from you, you were the wisest.
All the love she knows she learnt from you, you were the wisest.
I don't know her all too well,
But I can tell she's a believer,
Passion sparks her eyes,
She's the sunny side of her own life.
Miranda, plays her songs for us to hear in the evening.
Late night she's alright,
She must be Jesus' little helper.
All the love she knows she learnt from you, you were the wisest.
All the love she knows she learnt from you, you were the wisest.
Miranda takes her eggs sunny side up in the morning.
(OOC: Sigh... here it is.)
