Let me take you on a journey. It is one spiritual and one mental. It will take you inside of my mind and through the cesspit of my soul. From the darkest corners of my realm of reality to the flourishes of optimism. From a void of nothingness, to a collision between my negativity and my positivity. This may be post-storm... but the worst is yet to come. This is Still Waters. And the award for most pretentious intro goes tooooo...

Before I start, I'll get some of the information out of the way first. I'll be posting the intro and the first song together, and the final song with the outro together, so you're satisfied. The album will be released once the last track has been posted.

The first two tracks are Heaven Sent and Two Trees, so let's start!

1. Heaven Sent (0:41) (Ambient/ Industrial) [INSTRUMENTAL]

A melancholy synthesized sound fades in to begin the album. It plays a sad melody, with a luscious layer of ambient crawling beneath it. The sound eventually get louder, and instead of a sad melody, it now goes extremely erratic, a mixture of beeps and unusual instruments. Some incomprehensible whispered lyrics are hidden beneath it, but it’s practically impossible to make them out since the lyrics booklet doesn’t help at all. It gets louder and louder until the tension just disappears with a cymbal crash... it then goes back to an ambient backdrop with a harp arpeggio playing. Industrial noises, however, get louder and louder until it cuts into the next song.

2. Two Trees (5:57) (Art Rock/ Progressive Rock)

All the industrial noise builds up and eventually winds down into an insanely complex, yet peculiarly catchy riff on Jason’s guitar, similar to the more eclectic stuff of Mind, except slightly more poppy. It is polyrhythmic, making for a very interesting drum pattern. It also has a slightly boosted bass, whilst the second guitar is playing a slightly simpler galloping riff. The first verse is sung in an unusual tone, with a mix between indie rock mumbles and operatic and exaggerated bellows. The second verse is where everything changes. A clusterfuck of instruments mark a turning point, where both guitars go into a downtuned, djenty sound and the drums give off a metallic sound. As in heavy metal, not St. Anger. The vocals in this second verse are low and quiet, with a lot of emphasis on echo. It is the same polyrhythm as the first though. A chorus, or what’s closest to a chorus in the whole song, then appears. High guitar arpeggios mixed with a bluesy riff and ambient effects beneath it are what it is comprised of musically. The vocals are in the operatic style of before. The third verse goes in the same direction as the second. After this, things start to get even WIERDER. Everything speeds up and it goes into a punky riff with industrial beeps and blips beneath it. All of the vocals from this point until the final verse are screamed beneath static, so you can’t quite make it out. You can tell that this song is possibly going to be the busiest on the whole album. In the final verse, the drums go into a drum roll, the guitars totally disappear and let the bass start talking. The vocals are sung loudly, with the lyrics in brackets sung quietly behind it. It ends suddenly, with the sound of a guitar being dropped.

Two trees, but one is taller than the other,
Light now, then shade will soon blow its cover,
And the minerals, that rest in the ground for them to devour...
And they will.

Two timed, the bastard pro-creates,
More lies, when friendship turns to hate,
Conformity, we don’t want to go down,
Simply.

Freedom, I’m free now,
I’m free now, freedom.
Freedom sings out loud...

Two trees, can you now follow me?
Right here, lay the invisible bodies,
Ghosts are waiting to take you away,
And they will.

The roots are bloodied,
We are thirsty,
So hungry,
Time to feed...

Now, bring me down.
I dare you, bring me down.
This tree, no longer,
In conformity,
So bring me down.

Now, bring me down. (Save me, please)
I dare you, bring me down. (No longer I need)
This tree, no longer, (Two trees)
In conformity, (Resting in me)
So bring me down.

Bring it down! (Save the world)
Bring it down! (You know you want to)
Bring it down! (Holy Father)
Bring it down! (Is resting)
Bring it down! (These two trees)
Bring it down! (Remain bloodthirsty)
Bring it down! (Offer yourself)
Bring it down! (To these leaves)

Join me tomorrow for the next song.

Jason: Thanks man! All in all, there are only a couple of metal tracks so to say on the album, but there are a lot of heavy aspects to it. It's certainly darker than anything I've ever made before.

OOC: Nah, I just made it up on the fly really :P

We ready for track numero... tres? Here it is. One of the most aggressive on the album. You've probably already heard it, but here it is anyway.

3. You (3:01) (Art Punk/ Hardcore Punk)

To begin the song, a chunky, menacing riff similar to the early punk days of Mind is present. A second riff on the lead guitar then appears which is rapid and complicated, a bit like Thrash Metal. As well as pretty basic drums and bass being introduced afterwards, the song stays like this for each of the verses, in which the vocals are harshly sung. Not quite screaming, but more a throaty bark like System of a Down or various punk bands that you may find. The chorus is slightly different, with an electronic background being applied alongside djent-y, downtuned guitars and bass, with the drums playing a regular metallic pattern. The vocals are sung in a poppy voice for this part, which results in an effective contrast. The bridge is a whole different kettle of fish altogether though. Firstly, all the instruments disappear, replaced by an accordion. Then, all the vocals are sung in a doo-wop accapella style. For the reprise of the chorus, it then comes crumbling back to earth. The chorus is even heavier this time around and instead of poppy vocals, it goes to a traditional Jason screaming style. On the “you fucking hypocrite!” line, everything speeds back up to how it once was and Jason produces his finest scream on the whole solo album. It then goes into the normal chorus again and the song abruptly stops after it. In general, this song doesn’t have any special effects like usual, just plain balls-out rock.

Fuck off, back off!
There’s nothing I want to talk about...
Changing, raging...
There’s something that I have in store for you.

Leaning against the wall of your sanity,
Flicker in between.
I won’t resign to conformity,
This anger will not be seen.

Fountain of youth!
Corrupted.
Obstructed.

Leaning against the wall...
The wall...
Sanity beneath me.
Satan is all I want to be.
You fucking hypocrite!

Leaning against the wall of your sanity,
Flicker in between.
I won’t resign to conformity,
This anger will not be seen.

Yes, yes it does. Anyway, this next track is a personal favourite of mine, written and co-starring my good friend Eric Quillington, with the music written by yours truly. They are, as you would expect, the best lyrics on the album. Oh, and before I forget, at the end of this whole shindig (album), I'm going to do a summary of it all.

4. Untitled Thoughts (4:53) (Rock/ Alternative Rock) [FEATURING AND WRITTEN BY ERIC QUILLINGTON]

Slow, sad violins begin the song. Soon afterwards, it is joined by a slow, jazzy drum beat and Eric Quillington’s piano coming into play. A bluesy, soulful lead guitar riff by Jason also comes into action, accompanied by another one to support it, which is slightly groovier. The bass is pretty simple, just one note after another. This doesn’t go on for very long before the vocals come into action, soulfully and extremely emotionally by Jason. The violins are joined by some synths as well as a couple of ambient effects, but very discreetly. The chorus is a loud, anthemic and surprisingly upbeat piece of music, with Jason and Eric both singing loudly above alternative rock style piano and guitar chords. At the end of the chorus, the music quietens down and goes off on a tangent, with Jason and Eric engaging in some Smashing Pumpkins-style soloing. Towards the end of this solo, it goes back into another verse which carries on in the same style as the first one, except the violins are louder and playing a slightly happier melody. Sort of like a rainbow after a rainy day. It goes into the chorus again, with ironic choirs behind both the men, and a lot of background noises going on now. At the end of it, they engage in yet ANOTHER guitar battle, except this time it is slightly more traditional, and reminiscent of Oasis. It then goes into a quiet, mournful melody like at the beginning and slowly fades out.

Lying awake talking to you through a film
The spaces between our thoughts are so slow
And when the silence becomes unbearable, I’ll try to sing you songs
It’s my only talent that belongs

I’m floating away from the world, but it’ll be there when I get back
The sky will never vanish, and I’ll always have it in my mind

I’ll impatiently spit out these words
Skipping from one thought to the next never has a pattern
The years stumble on, all the while I’m terrified of the next day
But I’ll be buried before my hair turns grey

I’m floating away from the world, but it’ll be there when I get back
The sky will never vanish, and I’ll always have it in my mind
There’s no time for the present, but the wait for the future is much too long

Might I just say; it was an absolute pleasure to record a song for 'Still Waters' with you! Not sure if 'Untitled Thoughts' is on the same level as your other material on this album, but it's an honor to have it included. So far, 'Two Trees' is my favorite; I'm just loving how trippy and experimental it is! Looking forward to seeing what else will be on the album!

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. Here's where things start getting weird. It's an unusual ambient track this time. Anyway guys, what are your fave songs so far?

5. In the Tundra (3:24) (Acoustic Rock/ Ambient)

A repetitive acoustic guitar line slowly starts the song, in an upbeat, but quite haunting and emotional way. This one guitar line practically sets the foundation for the whole song, since it is intended to be a “cool down” after the rockier and bigger songs that precede it. There are drums quietly in the background, audible, but not so that they get in the way of the song, almost like the playing you would get in a jazz club. The song goes like this the whole way through, with the lyrics softly sung in an extremely delicate voice, until the lyrics end and it gets to around the 2:15 mark. From then, it fades into an unusual ambient section with incomprehensible words spoken beneath the layers. As well as the lush, aquatic ambient effects included, some mechanical and industrial noises are occasionally planted on top of it, similar to those used in the song that comes afterwards, Escapegoat. This is to get the listener ready for it. Very distantly in the background, a reprise of Two Trees can be hard, the “bring it down” section, except it is hushed quietly this time as opposed to the emotional screams on the original track. Random clunking pianos that build up suspense then fade into Escapegoat.

In the cold...
In this cold you look at me,
In this cold...
In the cold I will set you free.

Your heart is cold.
Your heart is gold.

Bury my body beneath the snow,
Reap what you will, keep what you sew,
But you look so cold,
I will set you free.

You’ve been a good friend,
But now the time has come,
This time we’ll end.

Dear god...

This song turned out a lot darker than I thought... more dark ambient and less shoegaze. I still consider it one of my best though. Here is... Escapegoat. What do you guys think?

6. Escapegoat (7:01) (Noise Rock/ Art Rock)

A massive wall of noise introduces the song, with faint drum beats beneath, not dissimilar to My Bloody Valentine. More industrial piles mixed with the noises of the city begin to seep into the song. All the noise builds up to a high, before being cut down and revealing a desolate, spacey riff on top of a click track and light ambient touches. After a minute or so of this, a schizophrenic drum solo appears alongside the riff and it goes back into the noise. Here, the bracketed lyrics are spoken in a radio-like tone beneath the noise, quietly. The actual lyrics are also sung in a voice as calm as the waves and sounds fairly poppy, but without the blatant energy. On the line “let me slip through your head”, the noise gets quieter and a pompous, rocky riff replaces it. The noise is still blatantly there, but has just been brought down a level. It gets gradually faster until it explodes into a Mars Volta-like solo, absolutely mental. It then slows down and goes into a more unstable, uncomfortable noise. The vocals sound manically depressed and aren’t sung, but spoken whilst sounding like crying. The noise gets more unbearable, until a piercing scream breaks the silence, like a child’s scream, not the metal variety. It then goes into a crazy and dark riff, with lush ambience spread about. The last two lines are sung operatically, more so than ever before. This is one of the darkest songs on the whole album by a significant margin. After that segment, it fades out into a chilled, relaxed ambient techno piece with synths and a steady drum beat for a minute until cutting out.

(Don’t you realise while you criticize the system
We are the system!
We control our thoughts!
We are free!
We lie to ourselves, keep ourselves paranoid.)

We deter, we detest.
Who’s calling for you now?
We deter, we protest.
Who’s waiting for me now?
I may be broken, but I’m not beat.
I may be broken, I won’t back down.

Let me slip through your head...

I feel like I’m drowning,
A pool of decimals,
I can’t help but decimate,
My eyes have turned irate.

I feel quite comfy,
A sip from the hot tap,
Take a look upon your face,
There are no angels in this place.

I am the last shepherd,
I know what you heard,
It’s alien to me,
And I sit upon still waters.

I will look upon still waters,
Let me slip through your head.

So far, all the reviews have been great, so let's keep this going. Next track features a friend of mine, Michael Caiff. Possibly single material?

Let's get this a rollin'.

7. Conspicuous Spaces (5:21) (Progressive Rock/ Rock) [FEATURING MICHAEL CAIFF of IN PARADISUM]

An extremely chill, new age ambient layer fades in, to begin the song. This goes on for about 20 seconds, before the sound of a door creaking and shutting enters the song, marking the true beginning. A short, but sweet drum solo appears and is then joined by a groovily sexy, Deftones like riff. This goes on until the first verse. In general, this is possibly the most formulaic of all the songs on the whole album. Jason voice is reduced to a luscious singing voice, which is soft, almost like breathing. On the 3rd and 4th lines of each verse, he is joined by Michael Caiff who assists him with slightly louder, more emphatic vocals. It is a cool harmony. The pre-chorus consists of a scaling build up, which creates tension and is then the chorus kicks in, which Jason putting on a slightly screamed voice, but still retaining elements of his normal singing voice. The melody here is slightly darker than the verse. On the segment after that, it goes a little tribal, before kicking back in for two more choruses. A little solo then commences, with an emotional, bluesy undertone and this goes on for about 20 seconds, before everything goes quiet and Jason sings the last 2 lines dubbed beneath accapella vocals that are layered on top of it. Quietly beneath, lay harp arpeggios, a recurring feature from Heaven Sent. After those vocals, the song cuts out.

I was falling down,
Saying goodbye to this town.
Your face lights up the sky,
In my hurricane tonight.

Stay lost with me, once more, my love.
Stay away without me, my love.

We were sailing set,
Through the sea that we have let,
Take more than what we are,
We fly to the shooting stars.

Stay lost with me...
Lost with me.
Lost with me...
Stay lost with...
Me.

We were sailing set,
Through the sea that we have let,
Take more than what we are,
We fly to the shooting stars.

We were sailing set,
Through the sea that we have let,
Take more than what we are,
We fly to the shooting stars.

The stars shine tonight...

Johnny: I can't say that there's anything to dislike about this album. I love it and it's going into my collection for sure. I'd love to collaborate with you sometime on an artsy or experimental tune for sure.

Joe: This album does not suck. We should make our own approval stickers that say that.

Johnny: Agreed and ditto.

You can go to sleep to this one... it's chill. Here we are with Opprobrium.

8. Opprobrium (3:40) (Alternative Rock/ Ambient)

A quiet breath of extremely chilled ambient noise fades into the song subtly as an introduction. A very distant and extremely clean guitar riff is buried somewhere beneath this, as more electronic beeps and blips come into play. Although it is hard to make out, beneath it is a melancholy mumbling. It is practically illegible, but the lyrics are in the little booklet, so that’s sorted. This song is probably the most relaxed on the whole album. Various different segments from radio broadcasts and old television programmes are played and there are a lot of loops started to appear in the background. It still remains peaceful and calm, if slightly sad. Mournful choirs are also becoming slightly less muddled at this point, although you’d really have to dissect the song to make it out fully what they’re saying. Then, what sounds like a Japanese television programme sneaks quietly into the proceedings. Also, what sounds like Jason talking and laughing in the background amongst friends and some erratic strings bring the song to its most tense moment, before proceeding to quieten down and make room for aquatic noises and electronic loops and sequences again. This continues throughout the rest of the song. The last line in the whole song is the only one made out clearly and Jason sings this in a low, dark voice. It then fades out.

We sit inside the house and attempt to warm our souls,
Make meaningful peace, brother.
Peace to all of you.
You discard me away.
Make friends in my solar wake,
It’s hard to be back here,
It’s hard to be alone.
Make friends with your solar gift,
It’s so nice to be back here.
You know that this is not what we landed for,
Discard a royal.
We sit inside our house of creation,
Peace to all.
Peace delivered with opprobrium.
