Honest is the debut studio album by American singer Johnny Carter. It was released on March 29, 2017, through Just Record Records. The record is Johnny's first LP following his EP Deadly Party, and a concept album according to official description: "a conceptual album based on Johnny’s journey of self knowledge and emotions". Primarily a Pop album, Honest encompasses a variety of genres, including R&B, Soul, dancehall, trap, hip hop. The album features guest vocals from Dale Dunn and Amy-Jayne.
The record was mostly positively acclaimed by critics, who praised it as Johnny's great and bold debut. The album before its release was supported by three singles: "Come Out", "The Game" featuring Dale Dunn and "Same Memories" featuring Amy-Jayne; alongside a promotional single, "Party". It is rumored that in the next months, Johnny will embark on his first ever headline tour, to promote the album. Some music publications included the album among the best of the first quartet of 2017.

On December 21, 2015, Johnny released the promotional single "Party" right after a performance of the song on The Real Talk with Ezra and on March 8, 2016, he released a Short Video for the song in order to hype up the lead single's release. On March 19 and May 13 of 2017, Johnny released the lead single "Come Out" and the second single "The Game" featuring Dale Dunn, both singles found huge success with the lead reaching the number one in the United States. After the end of "Welcome to the Show Tour" where Johnny was an opening act, he disappeared from the public eye, working and trying to figure out things, details and difficulties and then he came back on January 26, 2017 with "Same Memories" featuring Amy-Jayne.
The singer is rumored to be headlining a tour after the album's release, dates or any official announcement aren't available yet. The album's title and theme were inspired by Johnny's feelings and what he went through in the past months. Close to the end of track "Dust Off My Shoulders", an audio recording of Johnny heard saying "This is the end of a journey. And the start of a new one."

Title: Intro: Honesty
Genre: R&B, Soul
Length: 3:06
Songwriters: Kevin Blake, Johnny Carter
Producers: Kevin Blake

"Intro: Honesty" is a song recorded by American singer Johnny Carter for his debut studio album, Honest (2017). Johnny co-written the song with Kevin Blake and the latter also produced it. "Intro: Honesty" is a downtempo song. The song begins with Johnny singing, "You can sense the passion in the air / Every feeling's stronger than it were." The track serves as the intro of the album. It also has a similar title to the album's. In the song, Johnny harmonizes with himself and his voice then blends with the instruments.

Lyrics:

You can sense the passion in the air
Every feeling's stronger than it were
And now my world light up in flames
It didn't used to be, like a fireplace
And the air I breath feels like
Like a burnt side of my old case

I wanna see your honesty
I wanna feel you, I wanna feel you
I wanna see your honesty
I wanna feel you, I wanna feel you
I wanna see your...

Everything fell into its place
Though I wasn't aware of my mistakes
But the truth takes over my plans
And my loneliness fades away
Cause all I do is leaving my footprints
Constantly, nobody else, not other chance

You caught me being honest
I want you to feel me
I caught you being honest
I want you to feel me
You caught me being...

Title: The Game (ft. Dale Dunn)
Genre: Pop Rock
Length: 3:48
Songwriters: Martin, Johnny Carter, Dale Dunn
Producers: Martin, Johnny Carter

"The Game" featuring Dale Dunn is a song recorded by Johnny Carter for his first studio album Honest (2017). It was written by Dale Dunn, Martin and Johnny Carter and produced by the latter two. It served as the album's second single, released on May 31, 2016 through Just Record Records. "The Game" received positive reviews from music critics who deemed it as Johnny's most political song and praised the production and Dale Dunn's verses.

After the gay anthem "Come Out", Johnny released the powerful collaboration with Dale Dunn "The Game" as the second single from his upcoming album "He was the perfect match for the song.. Without his parts the song wouldn't be complete." Johnny said about his collab with Dale. "I don't wanna say much about the song or explain it. Interpret the lyrics as you feel like because you can understand the song in many ways and enjoy the music and the message behind it."

Lyrics

[Dale]
Little things, minor thoughts
Peace of mind can't be bought
Toss and turn so distraught
You've been trapped, you've been caught
Can't escape you're ensnared
Body numb mind aware
Try to feel, try to care
Try to move, light a flare

[Johnny]
You know I was made to be strong
It never has to go wrong
To create the life I belong
Real life ain't easy for too long
These words are made out of stone
So keep your head to your goal

This game is played by no rules
You have to cheat for them fools
They are on the top, but have faith
They know you're bout to control
All of the things they don't know
They're afraid of your strength

I know I am taking the lead
And no one's able to believe
There are men, with the will
Oh they're begging me on my feet
And I will spare them their free
I have made it, stayed the same and released them all

This game is played by no rules
You have to cheat for them fools
They are on the top, but have faith
They know you're bout to control
All of the things they don't know
They're afraid of your strength

[Dale]
So pick up! Dust off! Every time you fall
Be the brightest f*ckin light and you better blind them all
Take all you can get and give your everything
Dive from that cliff and spread your wings
Don't ever give up and lay down to die
Because how can you know, if you won't even try?

Try hard as you might, a mission you can't abort
Looking for the light, on your own no support
Can you make it right, or end up falling short?
How to face this plight, something that's left un-taught
Pieces of your mind sold and bought
So set the sky, bright on fire
Motionless on the pyre
All the memories and all the names
Yeah...you know it's just the game

[Johnny]
This game is played by no rules
You have to cheat for them fools
They are on the top, but have faith
They know you're bout to control
All of the things they don't know
They're afraid of your strength

Title: Party
Genre: Trap
Length: 2:45
Writers: Johnny Carter, Detail
Producers: Bobby Johnson, Detail

"Party" is a song recorded by American singer Johnny Carter. It was released on December 21, 2015 by Just Record Records as a promo single. It was written by Johnny Carter and Detail and produced by Bobby Johnson and co-produced by Detail. "Party" is a trap song with a hip hop beat present in its composition.
Upon its release, "Party" received mixed reviews by music critics, finding the song with a club-ready sound but lacking in the lyrical content.

Background
"Party" was written by Johnny Carter and Detail and produced by Bobby Johnson and Detail. Johnny started working on the song right after the release of his first EP "Deadly Party". The song was released as a gift to his fans and a Christmas single for parties and clubs. On December 19, 2015 he performed the song along with "True Love" on the Real Talk and it was announced via Twitter and Instagram that the song would be released the next day for digital download and impact radio stations.

Composition
"Party" is a trap song with a length of two and forty-five minutes. Its production consists of trap, hip hop and R&B elements with Auto-Tune. Sophia Craig from MTV News noted that the track was different than his previous work (Deadly Party EP). Lyrically, the song features a fun and kinda naughty tone with lyrics like "Suck it hard like lollipop, never bite the lollipop, I know you thinking bout sucking it, I know I'm thinking bout lovin' it".

Lyrics

Oh the time is now, go out and have some fun
Get wild all night, get drunk and have some fun
Get wild all night, get drunk and have some fun
Oh the time is now, throw your stuff and rock it hard
Party, party all night long
Get wild all night, get drunk and have some fun

Part-, part-, part-, part-, party
Hard
Suck it hard like lollipop, suck it hard like lollipop
Suck it hard like lollipop
Don't you bite the lollipop
Never bite the lollipop, never bite the lollipop
I know you thinking bout sucking it
I know I'm thinking bout lovin' it

Man, I see them neon lights, man, I see them neon lights
Neon lights, turn off them lights
Man, it feels like paradise, man, this feels like paradise
Man, it feels like paradise
Paradise, in them tights
Yeah, I'm tryna party with you
Yeah, I'm tryna party with you
Man, I'm tryna party with you
My clothes off and fuck it with you
Man, I swear I'll party with you
Yeah, I wanna party with you
Man, I know I'll party with you
Yeah, I'll get drunk and do it with you

Throw your hands up, baby let me rock your world
Throw your hands up, baby let me rock your world
Part-, part-, part-, party all night
Drunk, drunk, drunk, drunk, drunk have some fun tonight
Let's fuck tonight

Title: Same Memories ft. Amy-Jayne
Genre: Pop
Length: 3:32
Songwriters: Cara Zayn and Johnny Carter
Producers: Blanko and Johnny Carter

"Same Memories" is a song recorded by singer Johnny Carter featuring Amy-Jayne. It was co-written by Johnny with Cara Zayn and produced by Blanko and Johnny. It was released on January 26, 2017 through Just Record Records as the third single from his debut studio album, Honest (2017). "Same Memories" received mostly positive reviews from music critics who praised Johnny and Amy-Jayne's collaboration, the lyrics and mood of the song.

Johnny started writing and working on the song early of 2016, but he didn't really felt like it was right until Cara Zayn took it and wrote the song keeping some of his lyrics and the main idea. According to Johnny, he reached out to her, gave her the song and she's really cool, and she offered to help him. When the song was ready, he recorded a demo but it didn't sound like it was supposed to, he thought about it being a collaboration between him and a female singer. The first one on his mind was Amy-Jayne, he always liked her as a singer and as a person, he played the song to her, she really liked it and got in the studio immediately.

Lyrics

[Johnny]
I don’t think I’ve ever been this lost
I find myself alone in the home that we once shared
Thought that we’d be the ones to make it
Thought that you were the one that truly cared
But look where that got me
Look at me now
Living in this emptiness
And I just don’t understand how

[Amy-Jayne]
I spend nights thinking about you
The love that tore my life apart
Searching our photographs and videos
They only serve to hurt my heart
[Johnny]
And I can’t find the motivation
To be the man I was before
I can’t find the inspiration
Without you by my side anymore

Every day I see and feel the same things
I’m just following my boring ass routine
There’s no one to change it, oh no
No one to make me go out of my home
Now I’m waiting for you
Now I’m waiting to change these same memories

[Amy-Jayne]
Sleepless nights, early mornings
So many thoughts running through my mind
But there was just no warnings
[Johnny]
Sleepless nights, early mornings
Checking my phone, but you ain’t calling
[Amy-Jayne]
Sleepless nights, early mornings
So many thoughts running through my mind
Same memories that I can’t leave behind

[Amy-Jayne]
If I ever love again
I fear that it won’t be the same
If I ever find someone new
I know that they won’t be as perfect as you
And that’s why I’m struggling
That’s why I’m falling
Same memories
[Johnny]
Same memories

[Amy-Jayne]
Sleepless nights, early mornings
So many thoughts running through my mind
But there was just no warnings
[Johnny]
Sleepless nights, early mornings
Checking my phone, but you ain’t calling
[Amy-Jayne]
Sleepless nights, early mornings
So many thoughts running through my mind
Same memories that I can’t leave behind

Title: These Darks Days
Genre: Pop Rock
Length: 3:37
Songwriters: Johnny Carter
Producers: Johnny Carter

"These Dark Days" is a song recorded by American singer Johnny Carter for his debut studio album, Honest (2017). The song was written and produced by Johnny. It is the only song and the first one that he writes and produces all alone. The song is the most personal one to Johnny and it's influenced by his thoughts, emotions and personal experiences he had at a tough time.

Lyrics:

I was trying to keep up, don't be cruel when you see I was working so hard
You've been calling all the time, I won't answer 'cause I'm busy thinking so much
I've been distanced from your kiss, not your fault I'm doing this, don't you worry
There've been changes in my life, things I'm not able to analyze through my senses

Sometimes things get rough and fall out of place
Sometimes lies are better than pain
Somethings you can't control or love with 'cause you're just not enough
Oh you'll understand, when you face these days

I can't blame you or someone else 'cause after all I'm the only one to blame
I need time to clear my mind 'cause I'm only thinking about all the troubles
It's all for the best, doesn't have to make sense, I'll always be here for you even after all that

Sometimes things get rough and fall out of place
Sometimes lies are better than pain
Somethings you can't control or love with 'cause you're just not enough
Oh you'll understand, when you face these days

I was trying to keep up, don't be cruel when you know I was working so hard

Sometimes things get rough and fall out of place
Sometimes your mistakes punch you in the face
Somethings you can't control or love with 'cause you're just not enough
Oh you'll understand, it gets hard sometimes

Title: Love's A Flower
Genre: dancehall
Length: 3:20
Songwriters: Michael Bucker
Producers: Skrillex

"Love's A Flower" is a song recorded by American singer Johnny Carter for his debut studio album, Honest (2017). Written by Michael Bucker; the song was produced by Skrillex. A dancehall-pop "kinda love song" "Love's A Flower" is one of the few tracks considered to be a filler on the album because of the absence of an actual meaning and purpose in the album.

Lyrics:

All the feelings that I have (get)
When I see your smile (eyes)
All my colors turn to red
Yeah my love's a flower

*Beat drops*

You pushed me to fall, but now I'm standing stronger than before

Tryin', tryin' hard
But you keep on pulling me down
Cryin', cryin' loud
But you don't give a shit about ours

You pushed me to fall...

*Beat drops*

Have a blast and play it on rewind
Lose control and leave it all behind

*Beat/rewind*

All the feelings that I have (get)
When I see your smile (eyes)
All my colors turn to red
Yeah my love's a flower

Title: Road to the Top
Genre: Hip Hop, R&B
Length: 3:05
Songwriters: PainKiller, Johnny Carter
Producers: PainKiller

"Road to the Top" is a song by American singer Johnny Carter from his debut studio album Honest (2017). The song was written by Painkiller and Johnny Carter and produced by Painkiller. Music critics found it to be the continuation to "Boss Up" from his "Deadly Party EP", with the difference that this caused controversy because of its lyrics, the attitude and the references.

Lyrics:

You thought I was a one hit wonder, you must be wrong
I am still here, charting, it'll be for long
I'm just stating facts of my career and it's only been a year
Every other new rising star would like to get near

Blacks and a bunch of others, I'm on their level now
Billy and the Weekend, I still can't talk about
Some are left behind me, I can't even name them now

Better than you thought (better than you think), I wanna prove to y'all, I'm all that you need
(No) I'm not selfish, no I'm not like Kanye, I'm just stating facts better than some others
And if you wanna share part of my empire get in formation faster than these liars

Now I'm doing the things that I was born to do
Fighting for my own good and the things I love to
No time for competition or stupid immature collisions
Now it's time to risk it all and make it gently to the top

Blacks and a bunch of others, I'm on their level now
Billy and the Weekend, I still can't talk about
Some are left behind me, I can't even name them now

Better than you thought (better than you think), I wanna prove to y'all, I'm all that you need
(No) I'm not selfish, no I'm not like Kanye, I'm just stating facts better than some others
And if you wanna share part of my empire get in formation faster than these liars

Blacks and a bunch of others, I'm on their level now

Ιt's Johnny's first release in 2016 and it marks the start of his new era. "Come Out" was produced by Red Triangle and Johnny and was written by Johnny Carter. The song was written right after the release of Johnny's "Deadly Party EP" and it was also recorded the same month. Johnny has been working on his debut album since October 2015.

The song is a Gay anthem, as the song is about sexuality and coming out without fear. This is the lead single of Johnny's debut album "Honest" because he wanted to really express himself and be honest to his fans from the start of his career.
"This is an important song for me and my career, because that's who I am and I didn't want to pretend. I want to be honest to y'all from the beginning and that's why this is the lead single of an album that I'll be honest about myself, my feelings and generally what's going on around me and that's why it's called "Honest". I went through difficult things cause of my sexuality and it is really unfair. I know many of you are afraid and dealing with situations that you shouldn't because it's nobody's business but yours. I wanna empower my LGBT fans, guys you're not alone, and we all together will fight for equal rights and the freedom to be who we are without fear."

Lyrics

Come out, come out, come out
Come out of the closet

Wanna smile and grind, oh they don't know
Not their business oh what you're doin' solo
Fuck em and what they say, you're not alone
And after all these things you went through
It's time to let it out
Oh no don't care about them
It's time to live your life

Come out, come out, come out
Come out of the closet
You don't have to change yourself
Do what you wanna
So come out, come out, come out
Come out of the closet
You don't have to pretend no more
Do what you wanna

Maybe it feels wrong, trust me it's not
Baby you should know, life is for you oh
I can assure you that you're not alone
And after all these things you went through
It's time to let it out
Oh yeah it's for the best
It's time to live your life

Come out, come out, come out
Come out of the closet
You don't have to change yourself
Do what you wanna
So come out, come out, come out
Come out of the closet
You don't have to pretend no more
Do what you wanna

So you don't have to be ashamed
That's you and they should behave
Feel free to shout it out, I'm out oh

Come out, come out, come out
Come out of the closet
You don't have to change yourself
Do what you wanna
So come out, come out, come out
Come out of the closet
You don't have to pretend no more
Do what you wanna
Come out, come out, come out
Come out of the closet

Title: Pleasin' You
Genre: Alternative R&B
Length: 3:55
Songwriters: Johnny Carter, Carlos Ross
Producers: PainKiller, Johnny Carter

"Pleasin' You" is a song by American singer Johnny Carter from his debut studio album Honest (2017). The song was written by Johnny Carter and Carlos Ross and produced by Painkiller and Johnny. The song talks about an intimate moment between two lovers, many believe he is talking about his first public relationship with the singer Joshua Grimmie.

Lyrics:

Can't touch my heart with no gloves
You used to hold me so close
My soul left my body to find you
But there's no connection, oh no no affection

Lock your lips into mine
Oh your skin can touch mine
Loud as hell but they can't hear us no more
Cause we left to our own little universe to let our bodies explode

Rock my body, you so fine, make my dreams come true
Come on harder every time, oh don't believe it's you
I love the way you treat me right, don't go away, don't move
You're pleasin me all night, lean back, my turn to please you

Oh now we don't have a choice
Our minds are going to be poised
My soul came back when it found you
And there's my intention, yeah for your attention

Lock your lips into mine
Oh your skin can touch mine
Loud as hell but they don't hear us no more
Cause we left to our own little universe to let the world explode

Rock my body, you so fine, make my dreams come true
Come on harder every time, oh don't believe it's you
I love the way you treat me right, don't go away, don't move
You're pleasin me all night, lean back, my turn to please you

Rock my body, you so fine, make my dreams come true
Come on harder every time, oh don't believe it's you
I love the way you treat me right, don't go away, don't move
You're pleasin me all night, lean back, my turn to please you

Title: Flirt Technique
Genre: Pop Rock
Length: 3:50
Songwriters: Johnny Carter
Producers: Harris Thompson

"Flirt Technique" is a song by American singer Johnny Carter from his debut studio album Honest (2017). The song was written by Johnny Carter and produced by Harris Thompson. Johnny commented that "this is one of his favorite songs because it talks about love and how it makes you feel and how many things love can make you do."

Lyrics:

It's crazy how you make my mind skip a beat
It's crazy how you make me feel like I'm out on the street
I know you want my body and control of my esteem
But I know I have to make the move to unlock your flirt technique

And then it's all on you, after my first move
And then you take the lead to make my world complete

I could change your mind, hold you tight
I could make you believe in love with first sight
If you bring me close, let me know, give me just one chance
To love you, oh baby love me

Impossible to understand what we do to each other
Impossible to feel like I'm your only lover
I know you only want me, no matter these excuses
And I know I have to make the move to unlock your flirt technique

And then it's all on you, after my first move
And then you take the lead, we find possibilities

I could change your mind, hold you tight
I could make you believe in love with first sight
If you bring me close, let me know, give me just one chance
To love you, oh baby love me

I could change your mind, hold you tight
I could make you believe in love with first sight
If you bring me close, let me know, give me just one chance
To love you, oh baby love me

And then it's all on you, after my first move
And then you take the lead, we find possibilities

Title: Outro: Dust Off My Shoulders
Genre: R&B
Length: 4:26
Songwriters: Johnny Carter, Kevin Blake
Producers: Kevin Blake

"Dust Off My Shoulders" is a song recorded by American singer Johnny Carter for his debut studio album, Honest (2017). It was written by Johnny Carter and Kevin Blake and produced by the latter. This song is one of Johnny's favorites and close to the end a recorded audio of Johnny saying "This is the end of a journey. And the start of a new one" can be heard.

Spoken words
Lyrics:

Fly away my love
When you don't know how to crawl
Just take my eyes
To see your body of lies
Never back down
Even though my pride's falling down

No one understands what it means to me
How the story goes
No one can explain how it hurts or feels
How it can't be real, how it's all unreal

They know my life's around
I'm fucking shit now, they have to deal
And all's behind, my pride's alright
I own how I feel

Dust it off
Dust it off
Dust off my shoulders
Dust it off

Memories fade away
For my own good or by mistake?
Life is a game
You have to play or back away

No one understands what it means to me
How the story goes
No one can explain how it hurts or feels
How it can't be real, how it's all unreal

They know my life's around
I'm fucking shit now, they have to deal
And all's behind, my pride's alright
I own how I feel

Dust it off
Dust it off
Dust off my shoulders
Dust it off

This is the end of a journey
And the start of a new one

They know my life's around
I'm fucking shit now, they have to deal
And all's behind, my pride's alright
I own how I feel

They know my life's around
I'm fucking shit now, they have to deal
And all's behind, my pride's alright
I own how I feel

Dust it off
Dust it off
Dust off my shoulders
Dust it off
Dust it off
Dust off my shoulders
Dust it off

Joshua: Baby, I am so fucking proud of you right now! I know this album has been such a long time coming and that this project means so much to you. You've been working hard on it for quite some time now and it has totally paid off. I love the R&B route that you are continuing to follow as you are flourishing with it and I think you've totally carved out your sound. I love the journey you take us on throughout the course of the record. With a title like Honest, I knew it'd be personal and insightful unlike a lot of generic pop records out there. People are really going to know and understand you a whole lot more after picking up this album x

Johnny: Joshua, thank you so much! It means so much to me to hear these words from you! I'm glad you liked it, baby! Even though the difficulties and the tough journey it's finally out! You are one of the few people that know how nervous I was and how hard this journey was for me! I know that it won't be liked by everyone.. and I'm going to work even harder for my next project! But as you know this era ain't over yet!

CosmaMendoza: I'm so happy that you finally got to release a full album, Johnny! This is a great body of work, the sounds of each song don't overpower each other so it creates a great overall sound, without having any kind of fillers. You've created a great piece here, very proud of you! I proud take notes!!

I'm really excited I got a chance to see this come to be after seeing how hard you work and how much time you put into this. The start of something great and I'm so happy to be a part of it.

Dae Ho Park: Johnny, you may not know it but I am your biggest fan. Whenever I want to dance, I turn on your songs. Whenever I want to cry, I turn on your songs. Whenever I need inspiration for my own album? I put this one on loop. I love how you bring so much to the table, from representation to pure variety in music. This album really is so good and I'm so happy that you were the one to release it! My favorites are definitely Honesty, These Dark Days and Dust My Shoulders Off. Flirt Technique too! All around, you fucking killed it, boooy!! 2 thumbs up from me!

OOC: Nice job on this anticipated album! I like seeing acts grow and release their debut albums. I've been here quite a while so I've seen a lot of people come and go and I'm happy to see you've become a mainstay with Johnny. I've loved his growth from his very first single until his debut :) There's songs here I enjoy (YASSS at using the K.Michelle sound alike 😭) but my very favorite one is Come Out. Perfect choice for the lead single and I love the story behind it. It showed that there's more to Johnny than just bops. Other than that, thanks for having Dale do a feature :) it's another song from the album I enjoy. Nice job.
