When I Grow Up


When I Grow Up is the third and final studio album by Korean-Pop girl group, Mi•Mi. The record was released on January 25th, 2021 by Five Pesky Kids and SM Entertainment with additional support from Dahlhouse Entertainment. The project comes after a lengthy 6 year legal battle with Mi•Mi's Korean label, SM Entertainment. The album was initially planned to be the follow up for He Say She Say, the album that solidified Mi•Mi household name. However, the album was pushed back for years after the success of the group sparked disagreements between the label and the artists, a 3-year tour sitting at the center of the debacle. In 2020, the courts sided with Mi•Mi and it was soon announced that the final album would see the light of day.

When they were just 12 years old, all 4 girls auditioned for a chance to sign on with SM Entertainment under a development deal and this led to the formation of the girl group as we know it. In 2013, Mi•Mi released their debut top 10 album In Our Youth. In 2015, He Say She Say was released, the sophomore album becoming the group's first #1 album. In the fall of 2016, Mi•Mi took to tumblr to leak a song titled "0923", confirming that they were already working on a new album. Many speculated about the song's meaning, the lyric's criticising their experience with labels at such an early age. The speculation didn't last for long, Mi•Mi and their team annoincing that they were taking legal actions against SM Entertainment just weeks later.

After declaring legal war on SM Entertainment with their standalone M&M's Chocolate funded single, "Melt", Mi•Mi was relatively quiet for a year and a half while on tour, leaving fans worried that they were disbanding soon. wiht no hopes of an album ever coming out. As stated by insiders, "When I Grow Up" was finished and sent out to be approved in January 2016, but SM Entertainment found it to be extremely disrespectful towards their label. In retaliation, rapper Miki Lee lost her patience and leaked her very own mixtape, How To Get 'Em Heated. No one knows just how disrespectful the original version of "When I Grow Up" might have been towards SM Entertainment but it's safe to say, Miki's mixtape was way worse, with rap lyrics that called them out by name like, "Listen.. M to the I-M-I/Who SM gon' make a slave? Not I!"

In April of 2017, Mi•Mi was forced to release The Show Must Go On as the lead single from When I Grow Up. The single does not appear on the final cut of the album. At the time, SM Entertainment had tried to compromise with the girl group by placing racy love songs on When I Grow Up. No songs about love appear on the album. In the same vein, Mi•Mi could not include songs from Miki's mixtape, How To Get 'Em Heated, nor could they put M&M promotional single, Melt, on the project. Still, Mi•Mi had the upperhand in the negotiations and the record stands as the first project where the girls of Mi•Mi maintained full control over the release of their album.

Many songs on the album were written all the way back in 2015, surviving years of tracklist revisions. Those tracks include "Bigger", a cut from the Consequences OST, as well as "First Step", "Green Mile" and the title track, "When I Grow Up". These songs have a soft starry feel to them, with alternatively electronic R&B production that creates a dreamy atmosphere used to bring in the first half of the album. In 2017, Mi•Mi began to record more rhythmic songs with heavy Funk/Soul influence like, "We Can Be Replaced", "The Runaround", and "Step It Up" . In the following years, newer tracks were made with the hopes of wrapping up the album, some of the most recent being "Be You" and "No Excuses" which serve as songs that bring more life to the record.

It is a mid-tempo pop driven ballad that contains dark, chilling, and tense elements within its production. The song consists of guitars (all played by inZane), piano (played by FancyN) and synths which play over a pulsing bass line and amazing vocals from the K-pop girl group, Mi•Mi. Be You is a fast-tempo K-pop song with a heavy electronic influence. One of the most playful and pure K-pop songs the girls have released in a while, Mi•Mi takes the time out to remind the world how important it is to honor one's true colors.

“When I was told to make a song for the album that was purely about me, I couldn't help but put together my dream K-pop girl group collaboartion. [laughs] There weren't always a lot of Korean Pop girl groups around in the western market but now that there are, I just had to get one on a song.” Mae says, explaining why she chose iCandy as the first and only K-Pop group Mi•Mi will ever collaborate with. This is the song that inspired the hook. Both Rum & Coke rap their hearts out to the song from Outkast who the duo lists as their biggest influence. This moment is full circle because Rum & Coke is also the duo that helped Mi•Mi write, arrange and produce all of their songs.]

Billy: Bittersweet that this album is finally out. It's a wonderful record and triumph after all of the pushbacks the group has endured. The amount of strongly worded phone calls and emails I've had with that other company. Trash. Bullying works though! Fucking amazing album and I'm real happy it has finally seen the light of day. It's rather sad to see the end of the project but I'm sure all you ladies will go on to bigger and brighter things. It has been a pleasure having you all at Pesky.

OOC: Your first album in 84 years OMG!! It's great to see you back and also completing older projects. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing something finally completed triumphantly! Honestly forgot just HOW good of a writer you are. Your lyrics are very concise and pack a punch. Very intelligent while still having a fun, poppy sensibility to them. This album honestly looks like it'd be something I'd purchase in real life. You did that! Can't wait to see other project resurface and flourish again in 2021!

Chris: umm so I was looking through the notes and I was supposed to get a shout-out in one of these songs and I thought there was going to be chairs and sexy time music but the second song was more depressing than mood setting. Don't think I forgot, sexy passion time. the album was great but it seemed like people went in and thought "You know what let's hit them with some adult serious shit." shame on you guys for having to turn on my brain to actually listen to content and meaning.

Chaelin: This makes me so sad. You ladies have paved the way for so many girl groups, including C.M.B.D. This album is a masterpiece, and I am glad we got the opportunity to listen to it.
