Suicide is the killing of oneself for their own reasons. Martyrdom is killing of oneself for a cause for others. That's what I believe,

Exactly Martyrdom isn't killing yourself, well it is in some cases like that monk who set himself on fire but other than that it's usually being killed.

Martyrdom doesn't necessarily have to be religious or historical. It can be a simple (well not really simple since your going to kill yourself) military fight, where you explode yourself if it means killing the enemy for the sake of your comrades.

I also want to point out it's not my definition, it was Merriam Websters.

The Christians like St Andrew who allegedly got crucified for their faith by the Romans were martyrs for Christianity. Ditto the ones who were thrown to the lions.
