Problems is a song by American singer-songwriter and former G2L member, Stefani Vola. The song was released worldwide on March 29th 2020 and serves as the lead single from her often delayed debut album. "Problems" comes nine years after her initial solo venture, "You Sent Me Flying" via her own imprint; Kiss My Pop, which became a top 20 hit in 2011. Vola, however, shelved plans for her debut album and eventually dismantled her label. In the following years, she took a step away from the spotlight and is now a mother of two. Stefani released "Problems" with no prior announcement or label support, taking an entirely independent route. "Problems" is an upbeat pop song with a strong afrobeat backing, inspired by Vola's Ghanian roots. The song was written by Christopher Hudson, Orkhan Oryjov and Stefani herself. Lyrically, the song revolves around the concept of being happy living life single and that loving oneself is one of the most important goals to achieve.
The song was initially written in 2019 during a writing camp in which Hudson, Oryjov and Vola took part in. At this point in her life, Stefani had made a return to music behind the scenes, initially intending to become a writer for other artists instead. The song was completed and then demoed by Vola herself, in the hope of someone else cutting the track. After almost a year, Stefani contacted Christopher to ask about the fate of the song. After he revealed that nobody had picked it up, Stefani decided to re-record and release the song herself. She later admitted that she wanted to keep the song the moment that she heard the finished demo.
Stefani Vola wrote:"I had written a good few songs in writing camps over the course of that year. I thought they were good, which is why I finished them and sent them off to labels and management teams but there wasn't any that I LOVED. When Orkhan, Christopher and I were working on "Problems", I was genuinely excited. It was the first time in YEARS that I heard a song with an artist's mind and not a writer's mind. There was something special about it. It was exactly the sort of style I was aiming for back when I planned on releasing my own stuff. I think that it was Christopher's magic touch that did it for me. He's a writing juggernaut. His melodies are the best. I didn't snatch the song up right away because I had no plans in place. I really didn't want to get back into performing but I genuinely did love the song. Months down the line, I was still thinking about it and I was at a point where I thought that our good work was just going to go to waste. I took the plunge, called up the boys and asked if anything was happening. When the song was still available, I took that as a sign. I just HAD to release it."
"I have a very different approach this time around. Back in the day, I was going on full speed. I was stressed and the pressures were too intense. G2L were very successful, there was a lot of speculation and pitting us against one another in the media when we split, I launched a label with my husband, my song went top 20. The early 2010's were hectic for me. I fell victim to the pressure. I was worried about sales, chart positions, competition, staying relevant, focusing on the label. I bit off more than I could chew when the group disbanded. Now, nearly a decade later, my mindset has completely changed. I'm at a point where I don't care about superficial things like numbers. I'm doing this for the love of music. The people who want to buy and stream it will do so. Anything else is a bonus."
