Seeing as it is in the papers here in Oz quite a bit of late, I thought I'd ask this and see what the lovely people of the forums veiw on voluntary euthanasia. Agree? Disagree?

For the record, I am all for allowing those terminally ill to choose to end their life, whether it be through living wills or whatever. Though its difficult to imagine been unable to move, talk, feed or bath ones self or be in the last stages of a painful disease such as bone cancer, I'd rather be allowed to end my life than linger on in what I'd describe as complete and utter futility, anguish, pain and despair and having loved ones watch the degeneration unfold.

Put yourself in a doctor's situation now - would you speak up if you knew a patient was trying to kill themselves, or not?

Consider that not speaking up is (in the UK currently) gross misconduct, if you knew what was going on. Would you cover yourself, or the patient?

I agree with it, as long as the laws are tight on it -
1. Definite consent from patients that they want to die. Otherwise, the legality could be abused, eg. by close family members of wealthy patients.
2. Definite consent from doctors that patients cannot be cured. Possibility of abuse by patients with suicidal feelings, or who don't know of a cure.
If both patient and doctor consent as such, then euthanasia should be legal.

I think there should also be some legal personnel involved. A dying person won't always make rational decisions.

What about mandatory euthanasia?

We are about to hit a population crisis. So why not give the oldies 5 years of retirement and then...retire them like they are replicants in Bladerunner?

I was refferring to their judicial and medical practice, lets say a rich man or one of his family members is in need of an organ, they put someone in jail who happens to have a compatible organ on death row and immediately euthanize him. That has been going on for quite awhile.

You never heard of Doctor Kevorkian? He's one of your own nations finest legalised euthanasia campaigners. Involuntary euthanasia tends to be known by a different name these days, it's called murder.
