"Viva La Vida" is the sixth single released by Pop group The Jollies on February 21st, lead single of their upcoming second album that is coming in 2021. The single is released under the Five Pesky Kids record label and was written by the group and produced by Bloom.
This song was written and recorded around Christmas 2020 and was also performed at the Jollies' first ever concert at the Royal Albert Hall on December 19th 2020, when it was presented to the public surprise for the very first time. A performance of the song in fact can also be watched on the Netflix special of the concert but die-hard fans can recognise that the sound of the instruments and the whole vibe of the song has a less Salsa-Latin flavor to it and gaining on the studio version a more Dance feel. The song though still remains highly influenced by Latin music and marks an evolution of the group's sound from a more easy Pop sound that had nods at Retro styles like 80s'\90s' to a more Latin music but as the Jollies premiere this new single at the BBC Radio 1 on February 19th 2021, they have been stating that the new second album that is coming in 2021 will be more different in sound and in genres. Their first Pop music will expand and divide into different micro-genres that will all blend together, David Power Hernandez described this idea as "as a comparison to the actual group - everyone is different but they all come together to create one force as five". So different genres will mix in different songs but will all come together as one big coehesive album. Further themes of the new album where hinted at but the group decided to keep mystery around them and not reveal more.
Generally, 'Viva La Vida' is a song that speaks about fun, enjoying life especially the simple things like love, family, working and so on. Natasha Stanovski bluntly underlined how the song isn't exactly about drinking, partying and dancing per se, but it goes beyond so as to everyone can enjoy it and relate. The group in fact always tries to encourage inclusivity so as David states "it's normal that an housewife, a grandpa or a simple kid could not properly enjoy a song about clubbing and dirty behaviour" and continues explaining the aim of the song. "We want to do an hymn to life, too many are going through a dark moment and we have basically started when the virus started one year ago and we have like made a career out of that but the thing is that it's good to spread light and celebrate the positive right now, as much as possible." And Rose Hemsworth gently and beautifully added "Many need to be reminded how beautiful life is!".
Speaking of the structure of the song, it feels quite different than usual. First of all, it's sung by all five together harmonizing their vocals through most of the song, this enhancing the feeling of mutual power, friendship and empowerment. The five vocals blend amazingly (Natasha going the highest, then Rose as very pleasing and high lead vocals, Zafari backing behind a little lower, David and Fabriano going very low creating the deep basses vocals) and it all creates a feel of a choir that makes you want to jump in and join the singing and the dancing too while the rhythm is well thought out behind. Zafari B Mari in the interview proudly described how it was him that mostly creates the dancing in the group routines when they perform live, they prefer to have a professional coreographer only to correct a few things but they want to be spontaneous and natural and not driven, so he reminded how it was him that decided the rhythm of the song when it was written and recorded. He said "When we were writing it, I kinda like danced to it and see if it were good. Like yeah, let me have fun with this dancing thing and ya know, it was good to create it all together with dancing, singing and all the stuff." to which Rose replied "Oh, we love to create visuals in our minds as well with our songs, it all... comes together I think! So that was fun to do for Zafari.".
