obviously a big problem in some places not so bad in others.. BUT... What are your opinions on it? are homeless people, simple the ones who have failed at life? is it drugs and alcohol that have forced them onto the street to live, or abusive homes? Do we owe them help? should we help them and if so how?
Does anything like the big issue exist in America? Thoughts, opinions, but keep it clean people. i am sick of having to warn people in here about personal insults, its against the forum rules as well all know and can end up in a ban /big bad wolf.
I hate it when people see me at the supermarket and they are like:
Hey, what are you doing here?

Well not necessarily failed at life many people ended homeless for reasons out of their control, I dont think owe them help is the right term but if we still have a bit of humanity left somewhere we should help em.

What are your opinions on it? I feel kinda bad for them.
Are homeless people, simple the ones who have failed at life? Not really there are sometimes when I needed money for rent and didn't have it. My mom had to send me money. And some people just don't have that mom.
Is it drugs and alcohol that have forced them onto the street to live, or abusive homes? Yes it could be possible or maybe your house burned down or someting along those lines.
Do we owe them help? No! We don't, but we can help.
Does anything like the big issue exist in America? Yes! A lot I see homeless people at least once a day.

Most homeless people I have met are just pleasant people who have made some wrong decisions, whether that be drugs/alcohol or not. Others may have come from abusive homes, others may have just decided that they don't want to be at home then realised that they have nowhere to go, I guess. Either way, I don't believe we owe them our help, but I do believe that if someone is genuinely in trouble, they at least deserve some human compassion. Where I think it goes wrong is that they're not getting enough proper help - if someone gives a person some money, they don't have a clue what's being done with it, so in part it could be fueling a person's problem more than helping them. The Big Issue is good, in my opinion, though some people find it annoying. I think it's much better than begging. You sometimes find people who're very talented too, street buskers and whatnot.

There's far, far, far too many reasons homelessness. Sometimes it comes from poor relationships with families, abusive homes, and yeah, alot of them when they get stuck on the street they drink a hell of a lot or they use drugs. Some people end up on the street BECAUSE of their addiction. In any case it's fucking appalling that in a so-called first world country, with thousands of houses sitting empty up and down this country, people have to sleep in sleeping bags in shop entrance ways. Of course we should be obliged to help them. Yeah, having a beggar come up to you and ask for some change can be annoying, but hell, you think they enjoy scrounging money from strangers? You obviously don't have to give to them, but why not buy The Big Issue? Or donate to one of the many charities like Shelter?

The government should also take a considerably larger problem in eradicating the problem. Have more shelters where people can stay. Do more to help these people have an address so at the very least they can apply for unemployment benefits, and then start looking for employment.

i think we do owe them help.. A lot of the homeless in the Uk are actually ex - soldiers. Which is a very sad thing.
I also think because the Uk is a socialist - capitalist society we are responsible for the people who live here... Its the reason why we have the NHS, the benefit system etc etc So i honestly think that a part of that should be to fund shelters for homless people and help them get back on their feet...

also i forgot to say if you don't know, The Big Issue is a magaine sold by homless people in the Uk to help make them money to get them out of their situation.

I agree with that, it is very very sad about the soldiers, but I find the whole way the British Army is funded and copes with things is disgusting.

I think we don't owe them help. For example me , I'm pretty much tight up with everything I have. I'm not going to be homeless myself so a homeless person can have money. I think people who have money should help.

Apart from you? Being 'tight up with everything you have' is a very easy excuse. You don't have to give a homeless person money to make them happy.

A Homeless person needs shelter right? But I can't trust everyone, especially these days. I'm not going to put my life in danger. Now I may give that person food.
I would bring any homeless family member into my apartment but not a random person.

And first of all) Most of the time Homeless people do ask for money. Not food, not shelter, "money"!!!! and sometimes they use that money for drugs to ease their stress.
Second of all) No one knows what make a homeless person happy because they are so down with their lifes, unless you sit with them and let that homeless person tell their life story then you would know (Me I don't have time for that)

I'm not saying to not help them. But we do not owe them help.

I don't think we owe them anything... Giving food is better than money, though, because money can buy drugs, a sandwich can't. I definitely do not think that people should expect the rich to solve the problem... the rich some way or another were smart enough to get there, it's not their fault that some people can't hold a steady job, etc.

OK, the whole idea of the capitalist system is one of philanthropy. The rich get rich off of the back of the workers and then they are charitable in return because that makes everyone living conditions better.

I've only ever worked minimum wage jobs, and I've always had money left at the end of the month, and I like to give to charity. Because it's a good thing to do. Helping others is good.

Nobody is asking you to donate 10% of your monthly salary to homeless people in the street. There are dozens of charities that work with the homeless, help feed them, give them a roof over their head, etc. Donate a couple of pounds/dollars/whatever a month to this charity. If you are telling me you don't have $5 spare at the end of each month, I'm calling you a liar.

And as a general statement, let snot get bogged down in the semantics of words and what they mean. OK, you don't "owe" them anything. But you should try to help homeless people if you can afford to. Of course don't just let them into your house. So give him some spare change. Yeah, maybe he will go and spend that on alcohol. So fucking what? If I lived on the streets I'd want to be drunk all the time too. It must be an imaginably horrid existence. Drugs like alcohol help make it slightly less unpleasant, for a brief time at least, and if they want that more than food, that's their damn choice. They ain't kids.

........Yeah. Of course the world is fucking shitty. Where have I said it's not? That's why those of us who can afford to need to be able to do what we can to help.

And let me clarify Steph. If you can't afford $5 at the end of a month to give to a charity, any charity, AND you work a full-time job, then I am indeed calling you or anyone else a liar. You spend EVERYTHING you earn on essentials like rent, food, water bill and electricity?

YES YES YES! I am also paying for College, and other stuff like cell phone, internet ect.
Well I work part time, but I get money every month from other personal stuff.

It isn't easy, my family is in Puerto Rico ad New York and the money that's left sometimes I save it so I can visit them. They sometimes come here.

I'm not saying I never gave to charity because I have but right now for the past couple of months I haven't been able to.

Remember just because you can afford to give to a charity doesn't mean everyone can, your only thinking about yourself.
Put your self in other people's shoes for once.

But $5 Steph?? I give like £3 every time I go to sainsbury's which is once every week, so that's like £12 every month. And before you go 'yeah but you dont work for that because your an idiotic child, I do because I get my allowance and it comes out of my allowance, which is like £15 every week, but then my parents pay for special occasions like when theres likee a thing down at Belugus they usually pay. So in a year I give like £144. Woah, that seems a lot :L

Probebly didn't do the maths right but whatever you get my point. You don't have to pay it in lump sum, just like £3 a week and it does all add up.

Actually, here's a story for ya ;)

Last year's comic relief, my dad was drunk that night as usual and made me donate loads of money to charity by texting in. But i'm on contract so on the contract it said i'd spent like £50 quid on this number I think it was like 3425 or whatever. And so my dad thought it was porn, because he couldnt remember, so I ended up getting grounded for a month before finally realising that it was for comic relifer :L
My dad subsiquently bought me a new Xbox Game :)
