History

Early years

After playing in various hardcore punk bands in the Chicago area, best friends, Chandler Geller and Patrick Lewis wanted to play songs by bands they listened to growing up such as Get Up Kids and Green Day. Geller met Irish-born high school student Gabriel Hunter in a Borders book store. Chandler introduced himself to Hunter when he overheard him talking about the band Jawbreaker, in which they shared a mutual interest. Hunter was already in pop/punk band PANIC! as lead guitarist but still told Chandler that he wanted to audition for the band. He auditioned as a drummer, but as soon as his vocal range was discovered, he became the lead singer. Due to his commitments with PANIC! for about 4 years Breaking Dawn at Sunset was in the air due to some members going to college while Hunter kept playing with PANIC!.

The band was nameless for years. While practicing for the first couple of shows in early-2008, Gabriel Hunter mentioned "Breaking Dawn at Sunset" which was a unused album title for PANIC!'s fourth studio album which later became known as "Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner".

One other Chicago musician, Christopher Galloway, was recruited to sing in the band while Hunter continued playing with PANIC! but before even playing a show the band decided to just wait until Hunter officially joined. In 2003, the band debuted with a Split EP, which featured the now defunct melodic hardcore band Emporium Night. The group released a demo EP, Honorable Mention, also independently, in 2006.

Independent success

After the release of their EP, Gabriel Hunter, currently of PANIC!, finally joined the band as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. During this time, they played many local shows throughout the midwest and northeast regions of the United States. In 2009, they were finally signed to major label onto Climax Records, where they will be releasing their debut full-length album, sometime before year's end. The band received an advance from Climax Records to record its proper debut, but it's been reported that PANIC! member Ryan Ross Hernandez has also majorly funded Breaking Dawn at Sunset. With major financing in place, the band is recorded their debut album at Ocean Way Recording in both the Hollywood, California and Nashville, Tennessee locations, with Ryan Ross Hernandez as producer. It's rumored that Ashley Perry will be featured in a song on the upcoming album. The band is scheduled to finish recording at the end of September and is hoping for a fall release. To farther promote the album the band will be playing many upcoming festivals and will tour as a opening act on PANIC!'s fall/winter headlining tour across the United States.

Musical style

While widely considered to be a pop punk band, Breaking Dawn at Sunset is often described as emo and cites emo group Scream Infamy as an influence. When interviewed for a retrospective article in Alternative Press at the time The Get Up Kids disbanded in 2005, Gabriel Hunter stated that "He would not be a musician if it were not for The Get Up Kids." Breaking Dawn at Sunset's main songwriters are Gabriel Hunter (melody) and Patrick Lewis (lyrics). In general, the group has direct ties to melodic pop music, with Gabriel Hunter becoming a producer aside from his work with PANIC! and Breaking Dawn at Sunset, and they also are closely connected to hardcore punk, due to their prior involvement in the underground Chicago music scene. Moreover, a central part of PANIC!'s sound is rooted in the band's lyrics, mainly penned by bassist Patrick Lewis, who commonly uses irony and other literary devices to narrate personal experience and stories.
