
Rel was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison today in Atlanta, it was a was a bittersweet moment for the Atlanta rapper.
Rel, whose real name is Al Young, could have faced up to three years in prison after pleading guilty to a federal gun charges. The rapper's defense attorney, Morris Bart Jr., argued against the strength of the evidence and succeeded in getting the judge to reduce the sentence suggested by federal guidelines.
Rel was also allowed to surrender for his prison term within 5 days. After he is released, he will spend two years on supervised probation.
Fans,friends,family and members of the YRMG crew showed up at the U.S. Federal District Courthouse in downtown Atlanta to support Rel. The judge also heard testimony from Rel's mother and fiancée.
Knowing that he would most likely be spending time behind bars, Rel says he will devote his last five days to shooting couple music videos and finish recording his debut album.
The sentencing ends one chapter of the young rappers legal woes. In a few month he's supposed to face trial for 1st degree murder stemming from an incident outside a Atlanta nightclub in the wee hours.
