(Occ: Change Rel's character from Wiz Khalifa to Juelz Santana)
Atlanta rapper is back and not even an disappointed debut album was enough to cloud Rel's career. The Southern rapper is currently tracks for his upcoming Coming Of Age album, which hits stores in a few months. Rel took time out his schedule to do this interview.
On Coming Of Age you have alot of guest appearances, more than your debut. What’s the reason for all the guest?Rel: On this album, I decided to reach out to an couple of artist that I felt could help me craft this album. Every artist that worked on this album gave outstanding performances. I had to make sure I brought my A-game
So the first single “If I Could Change The World” features Cherise. What was it like working with her ?Rel: It was an amazing. We vibed in the studio and came out with the record. We spent a little time crafting the song but it was worth it. The song just debuted on the chart at i think #55 in the US. So I'm really excited about that.
Remember Me fell victim disappointing sales. Are you feeling the pressure come better sales this time around?Rel: I think every artist wants there album to bigger and better than their last effort. I'm not really feeling any pressure. I know that I have put together an great album so I'm not worrying.
Shifting gears, do you have any regrets about like in the past, like the Shantel diss-song you did?Rel: Of course. That was just something that happen. I'm not on that any more. I'm all about making good music that people can love an enjoy. Shantel is cool people its no beef there. Its all love. I heard her new song 'Aint no Contest' recently. I like it shawty is doing her thing and my hats off to her.
Was it difficult coming up with new topics after you covered so much on the first album? Rel: Nah. The first album was very dark. That was because I was going through so much legal stuff but no all thats cleared. So this album has an different vibe. I touched alot of topics on this album.
How far along are you with your new album?Rel: I'm about 85 percent done. I'm still recording new songs. I don't want to miss out on that "song" that could be an big hit. The songs I've recorded already are great. I real confident about this album. I just got in the studio with Matty like 4 days ago. We made a song thats definitely going on the album. So were still in the recording process.
You mentioned Matty and Cherise. Who are some other people you’re planning on working with on this album?Rel: There were alot of artist willing to contribute to this album. Chloe is on this album. We have an amazing song that will be the second single. My artist Trell is producing and singing on there too. Monte Carlos is on a few tracks. Getting ready to go get some music done with Travis Barker who produced on my last album. I can’t really think of everybody else on there.
I noticed you have a really keen ear for beats. What your process for picking beats?Rel: Good beats stick out, you know what I mean? You hear it when it first come on; if a beat can rock the club with no words on it, that’s the beat you wanna rap on.
Tell us about your record label. Are you accepting new talent?Rel: Yeah,we look for new artists everyday. If they hot enough we work with them. We got a couple people on the radar, nothings fixed yet, but they on the radar right now.
Anything you’d like to say to our readers before you leave?Rel: Yeah. Thanks for all the love and support.
