Sally Stevenson Exclusive Interview
UserPostedImage

There was no doubt that 2010 has been an amazing year for Sally Stevenson. With two successful singles (including “Drop Me A Line”, which peaked at #7 on the Radio Charts) and a debut album that has sold over 275,000 copies, she was one of my picks for the best new artist of the year. However, after finishing up her tour of the west coast she decided to take a short break from music and subsequently fell out of the radar. I was thrilled to have the chance to interview her and get the scoop on what the 22-year-old musician is up to these days.

Your debut album, Underneath the Waves, was very successful and was also one of my favourite albums of the year. How has your success affected you?

Oh, thank you! It’s been amazing. I never expected that kind of reaction when I first started this project. The feeling you get when you find out that people like what you do is just incredible. I’d say that this experience has been the best thing to happen to me in my life so far.

Have there been any negatives to your success?
Well, I suppose that I get a lot less privacy. It’s hard when people know who you are, because they start to invade your personal life. It’s so hard to keep secrets from the public! I mean, I’m not exactly a big celebrity, but I still get people wanting to know every little detail about my life, and it’s really an obnoxious thing to deal with.

That’s understandable. Speaking of which, a lot of people have been wondering what you’ve been up to lately. You’ve been a bit quiet these days, haven’t you?
I have! I’m sorry, fans. I hoped to get on things sooner, but you know...life happens. I got distracted from music and ended up taking a short break from it, but that’s all over. I’ve gone back to writing songs and everything is fine.

Good to know! I’m sure people will be happy to hear that. But I’m sure everyone is wondering what happened that distracted you from music. Do you think you could give us at least a few details?
Oh...I don’t know about that. It’s pretty personal. Yeah, I don’t think I want to talk about that. Sorry guys.

You can’t give us even a little bit of information? Please? The people are dying to know.
Well...I experienced a bit of heartbreak. That’s all I’m going to say.

I see. Heartbreak often makes for good music, though. Has this influenced your songwriting at all?
It has, I suppose. Everything that happens to me influences my songs. This was a major event to me, so yeah, I’d say that it has actually influenced my songwriting a lot.

We’re used to hearing these really upbeat, sunny tunes from you. The subject of heartbreak doesn’t exactly fit into that subject. Has the style of your music been affected, as well as the lyrics?
Yeah, it’s not going to be the same thing as last time. Underneath the Waves was my summer album, and I guess this will be my winter album. It’s a little bit darker, but not depressing. More like...beautiful, romantic songs. Well, that’s what I’d like them to sound like, anyway. I still have the same influences, but my new material isn’t quite as sunshine-y as my earlier work.

Interesting. So, I take it you’ve changed as a musician?
Of course I have. Everybody changes. I wouldn’t make the same album twice; that would be boring. A lot of people freak out when their favourite band changes their style, but that’s just pointless. You can’t expect someone to stay the same forever. People and their music are always changing.

But would you ever consider going back to your old style?
You know...I might. That depends. I won’t be able to go back to my exact old style, that’s for sure. But I think my current style will be temporary, too. I think I’ll eventually go back to making summer songs. I’d rather do that than have a career of writing sad music. I’m just a happy person who was thrown into a sad situation, and I will be able to recover from it and get back to being the way I was.

Okay, here’s a bit of a random question. You said that this is going to be your winter album, and I was thinking...Would you ever consider making a Christmas album?
[laughs] Actually, I think I would! I’ve always loved the season. Maybe that can be a project of mine for next year. Who knows.

I’ll be looking forward to that! Okay, last question. Do you have any idea of when you might be putting out your new album?
I don’t know yet. Probably sometime in early 2011. I don’t even know what it’s going to be called or which songs of mine I want to use, so I’ve still got a long way to go. But there will be new music from me very soon, I promise.

Thank you, Sally! It was wonderful speaking to you!
You’re very welcome! It was great to talk to you, too!
