Kieran Marks towards the end of 2010

For some frequently idea changing vocalist Kieran Marks is seen as a person who should be idolised, but for others he is seen as a person who should be despised for this. Marks, who is most famous for being the former lead vocalist of metalcore band The Verdict Is Vengeance, and is also known for being former lead vocalist of The Reject Message, Zzzonked and Lights Go Red, has decided to reveal some of the hidden truths behind his repeated change in bands and musical style, and some more in-depth information about his new band, Behind The Tides.

As Kieran walks into our place of interview dressed in some denim skinny jeans, with some vans plimsolls and a black hoody with a local bands t-shirt on, today being a small café in the heart of Camden, London, it’s easy to see that his attitude towards people in general seems to be of kind and caring nature, as he happily greets the owner of the café with a “good morning, hope okay”, before coming and sitting with me. His hair is far different from the last time he was seen via television screens and his now a considerable amount longer, and less styled. We exchange in some casual talk before being asked the first question.

Interviewer: So basically, what has happened with you Lights Go Red? Was it a conflict between you and [other member] Alex Leuiso like the rumours have been?

Kieran: I would have thought the rumours would have stopped considering the post I put on my Tumblr. *laughs* The breakup of the band was not due to any conflict between me and Alex, we have always been close and although tensions were running high throughout Warped Tour, we never once had an argument. The band basically fell apart because neither of us had the motivation to do anymore work in the style which we attempted with the band. We both sat and talked and found that it would be easier if we stopped the band before it lead to issues between the two of us.

Interviewer: But from the way it was announced on your Tumblr post, it was made to seem as if you had left Lights Go Red for your revival of Zzzonked under the new name of Behind The Tides…

Kieran: It was oddly timed, whilst on Warped Tour with Lights Go Red I got in contact with the other members of Zzzonked, and they wanted to reform the band, but Andy [Hayley, Drums] said that he did not want to be a part of the band anymore. So we waited a while, whilst the other members found Josh Thompson [new drummer], and then decided to change our name and get a fresh start in a way. Admittedly the Tumblr post which featured the announcement of Behind The Tides and me leaving Lights Go Red at the same time probably wasn’t the best thing, but you can’t change the past *laughs*

Interviewer: Anymore details on Behind The Tides that you want to share?

Kieran: All that I can really say is that the band and I will be writing for an EP and Album at the same time and them recording when Toby [Coyte Broomfield/bass] gets back from his pre-made plans to be The Verdict Is Vengeances’ touring guitarist throughout February and March. We have no ideas for song or album titles yet, but our general style will be more of a class metalcore band with some post-hardcore influences.

Interviewer: Now time for some information about your new involvement in the electronic/dubstep movement that has started, what has influenced you into forming your side-project?

Kieran: I’ve always been a fan of electronic based music, some of the first albums I ever bought were by bands like The Prodigy, and I found that I wanted to show some of this influence in a less subtle way than in the past. What I mean by this is, all the electronic effects on the first The Verdict Is Vengeance album were because of my input, but now I want to make a project that is devoted to purely electronic/dubstep music and making remixes for other artists.

Interviewer: You’ve named this remix side-project Marksii, why is that?

Kieran: The name Marksii doesn’t have any hidden meaning, it’s just the old Myspace name I had back in 2005. I thought the name would suit the style that I’m going for I guess, and it’s kinda funny that I’ve linked the Myspace days with my new ideas.

Interviewer: The only remix/song that anyone has the chance to have heard is your remix of The Verdict Is Vengeance’s first single from Oblivion, Bathos, any news on some new tracks coming out soon?

Kieran: I will attempt to release some of my own electronic songs within the next few months, although with writing for Behind The Tides occurring I can’t promise anything *pauses*, but after that’s done I’ll start focusing on getting a mixtape out or something. Just gotta wait a while for it I’m afraid.

Interviewer: Brief personal question, are you currently looking for a relationship?

Kieran: Well in my last interview I said that I really wasn’t bothered, but now I guess that it would be great. Any single girls who want a relationship with someone like me… get in contact and I’ll see if I can rule your world *winks then laughs*, but in seriousness I really am looking for someone who is perfect for me, I’m just not that lucky with girls nowadays.

Interviewer: I’m sure plenty of people want to go out with you, just got to keep looking for the right ones though. It’s be awesome talking with you, hope to see some new stuff from both Behind The Tides and Marksii in the near future!

Kieran: Thanks for the interview, I’ll be sure to talk again soon.

I really enjoyed this interview. Glad to hear that all of the Lights Go Red drama was just media BS. I hate to see former band members have bad blood. Oh, and I cant wait to hear the new BTT shit! Same with Marksii. You can remix one of our songs anytime haha :D

It's such a shame that the media tries to ruin my reputation but I'm used to it now. Thanks! I'm so hyped up for Parallels debut EP, I'm sure in the future I'll remix one of your tracks, but we'll have to wait until the right time haha!

I have quite a bit of respect for you, Kieran. There aren't many people in the music industry that can repeatedly change bands and styles so successfully. I really love the idea of an EP and album being released at the same time for Behind the Tides, as well, and I'd be honored if you would remix an Infinite song!

-Eric Quillington
Kid Anything- Indie/Britpop/Shoegaze; influenced by Sigur Ros, XXYYXX, Kanye West, Blur, Oasis

(Bringing together an eclectic group of influences, Ulysses' songs are sung with carefree abandon by Nick Junk)

Kurt Ulysses - Songwriter, Guitarist, Backup Vocalist
Nick Junk - Vocals, Mojo

Infinite- Alternative/Experimental Rock; influenced by Muse, Radiohead, and The Beatles

(Known best for their experimental music and their frontman's eccentric behavior, the band disbanded after Eric Quillington's death to pursue solo careers or, in Matt Robert's case, peace of mind. Infinite released four albums over the course of their career; Blue Nebula, Midnight Skies, Insomnia, and Dancing about Architecture.)

Eric Quillington (Deceased) - Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar, Piano, Primary Lyricist
Matt Roberts - Bass
Greg Oldson - Drums, Backup Vocals, Secondary Lyricist
Amelia Florentine - Keyboards, Piano, Lyricist, Backup Vocals

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

Coming from you that means so much. I just don'tlike the idea of being suck under one stereotype or idea. I would be equally and if not more honored that you would want me to remix an Infinite song! I shall get to you with more details and ideas of what song when I'm doing writing for the Behind The Tides releases!
