Idols is the second studio EP by English metalcore band The Verdict Is Vengeance, and is due for release April 1th 2011, worldwide via iTunes and all good record stores on April 8th. It was recorded in Hellfire Recording Studios, Birmingham, England (the same place in which the band recorded sophomore album Oblivion), in March 2011. It was mixed by Matt Goldman and produced by former band mate Kieran Marks, and Robert Williams.
The reasons behind the covering of the bands influences was explained by vocalist Sam Maine who said; “Although we released Oblivion at the end of January [2011], we had a desire to show bands who influenced the way the record sounded. The band came together, and we discussed methods of showing these influences, and found that it would be best to record and release an EP, alongside one of the songs which we wrote on the Into Oblivion tour”
Title: Idols Released: 1st April (Digital Download), 8th April 2011 (CD) Format: Digital Download, CD EP Recorded: Hellfire Recording Studios, Birmingham, England (February - March 2011) Genre: Metalcore Length: 17:36 Producer(s): Kieran Marks, Robert Williams Label: Suicide Records Tracklist1) A Lot Like Vegas {Bring Me The Horizon}An aggressive harmonised deathcore guitar riff combination opens the song, alongside the harmonised screams of high and low provided by Sam and Lee. There is no use of samples or keyboards, due to the original featuring none. The use of drums is fast and brutal, testing the ability of Matthew Norris more than any of the bands previous songs. Due to the different tones of vocals provided by Sam and Lee, the vocals have a rougher feel than in the original song, showing evidence that the band has not tried to make an exact copy of the original song. 2) You’re Ever So Inviting {Underoath}The song starts with a rough shout going into a deep scream from Sam alongside a high-ringing guitar and fast aggressive drumming, which continues for opening 30 seconds, before the guitars lessen, and the drums become less aggressive whilst the vocals are mainly clean vocals provided by Robert, but there are elements of screaming and chants from Sam, Lee and the rest of the band. The chorus of the song is similar to the format of the opening of the song, with no clean vocals used. Towards the middle of the song, screams and clean vocals are used simultaneously, before there is heavy distortion and clean vocals from Robert, and then a change back towards a breakdown with screams from Sam and Lee. Robert holds the notes of his vocals towards the end of the song whilst screaming is sped up by Sam, and the other members of the band chant in the background. 3) Dez Moines{The Devil Wears Prada}This cover of Dez Moines by The Devil Wears Prada is almost perfect. The band keeps all of the basic elements of the song. The use of a growled and low screams throughout the song are used, along with the same effects on the guitars and the use of synth. The clean vocals are provided by Williams, who uses the variety of his vocal range to add a slightly different edge to the song.4) Hollow Crown {Architects}An organ mixed with a fast and soft use of the symbol, sounding like a tapping noise open the song. As Rob’s clean vocals start, the use of a distorted guitar is added to the song; the song follows this structure for the first minute or so, before the guitar fades away, then returns at the end of the verse. The vocals are sound echoed, and overlapped. The song progresses and the organ stops, whilst the guitar builds and the rest of the drum kit begins to be used. Suddenly screamed vocals from Sam are heard, as the guitar is note is held in the same format, and the vocals of Rob and Sam are mixed together as the music becomes hostile. Rob’s clean notes are held out, Sam’s screams are heard in the background, and there are chants from the rest of the band in the background. The song finishes with a held guitar note and clean vocals from Rob, going into a scream from Sam.5) Home Of The Heartless {New Song}The song opens with a piano playing along with chants in the background, after 40 seconds this changes suddenly towards heavy sounding drums, along with brutal guitars, and no synths. The vocals in the song are a newer style of scream from Sam, with more of a raspy sound, allowing more opportunity for people to interpret the lyrics, whilst Lee continues his high inhaled screams creating a slight harmonised screaming effect. The chorus of the song keeps the same musical format, but with the guitars giving a higher sound, there are also clean vocals provided by Rob, and screams in the background from Sam. There is a brief musical break as Sam shouts “Give me your hand” and there is an extended breakdown, it’s nothing special and sounds fairly cliché (especially in the metalcore genre, in which every song seems to have a breakdown), before the sounds of a piano return, giving a relaxed tone as the song finishes.
