This thread made me realize how little modern music I listen to, the only albums I can think of are all OFWGKTA related, but what I'm looking forward to in 2012 is hopefully Earl Sweathshirt's next album/mixtape

This is basically the first year ever that I bought a lot of music as it came out. Looking back I've bought more 2011 music this year than I've bought any music the year it came out basically for all other years combined. I guess that's a list of ten with my favorites of the year being first and then ones I wasn't as passionate about towards the bottom. Panic! at The Disco wins. I also have had a Craig Owens obsession this year and Patrick Stump is the man. I love Taking Back Sunday and nothing will ever be as loved by me as their first album but the song "This is All Now" is one of my favorites all year. Also I bought the super awesome autographed edition of the new CD. The new FF5 is just plain fun. I love Thursday's song "No Answers". Weerd Science was very depressing but a couple songs are amazing. THe New Regime is pretty cool I saw them open for Taking Back Sunday and bought their CD that night. Then there is Incubus which I was massively dossapointed by and I just put it in the top ten so I could mention how dissapointed I was.

Panic! at the Disco - Vices and Virtues
Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows - D.R.U.G.S.
Patrick Stump - Soul Punk
Taking Back Sunday - Taking Back Sunday
Family Force 5 - III
Thursday - No Devolucion
Patrick Stump - Truant Waves
Weerd Science - Sick Kids
The New Regime - Speak Through the White Noise
Incubus - If Not Now When

Honorable Mention: Coldplay. The new album hasn't had time to truely sink in, but I really like it.

The only artist I listen to that I know for a fact will have new music next year is Say Anything.

Hmm. This year for me has all been about indie/rock music. Punk is dead, and Blink 182's new album is a great example of that.

The Maine - Pioneer (Been obsessed with this. Self-released 3rd album from a band who's oldest member is 24)
You Me At Six - Sinners Never Sleep
Deaf Havana - Fools & Worthless Liars
Angels and Airwaves - LOVE Part II
Ed Sheeran - +
Breathe Carolina - Hell Is What You Make It (Not usually into this kind of music, but like this band)
The Vaccines - What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?
Bon Iver - Bon Iver
Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Am I The Enemy?
Coldplay - Mylo Xylto

The records im looking forward to are the new Young Guns, All American Rejects, Lostprophets, Pegasus Bridge, Frightened Rabbits and even Bring Me The Horizon's.

Still not finished my list, but here's a preliminary look:

J Mascis - Several Shades of Why
Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis is a cool dude, with long white hair, nerdy glasses, and a guitar. Here he plays largely acoustic tunes, singing in his particular Neil Young-inspired nasal drawl. It’s awesome.

Akron/Family - S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT
It’s hard for me to say anything about Akron/Family without fumbling my way through a weird child-like metaphor involving exploding crayon colours because this band is all about the pure innocent joy and wonder at the very idea of life.

Battles - Gloss Drop
I was wondering for a while when there would be a new Battles album. Then one of the band’s members left. Then a new album did come out and it turns out I like it better than the first one. So there.

Darren Korb - Bastion Original Soundtrack
Bastion is a video-game that is awesome. An independent production that plays great, looks great, sounds great, and is just all-over one of the best games to come out all year. Also the best soundtrack. Western meets trip-hop meets folk, lots of guitar twang and electronic beats.

R.E.M. - Collapse Into Now
R.E.M. are no more. Which is a shame and all, but I’m glad they put out one last record, and that it’s actually really good.

Björk - Biophilia
Oh Björk you crazy crazy lady. How I love how crazy a lady you are. Ach, it’s not that she’s crazy, it’s that she’s uninhibited. And this record is all over the place with weird ideas that hang together by the force of her will.

Dyskinesia - Dalla nascita
Somebody sent me a link to this free download record, and I was pretty smitten, which is almost never the case. This is what some might class as Post-metal, in the vein of Isis, Neurosis, et al, but actually the closest comparison I can draw is to pre-Pelican band Tusk.

Paul Simon - So Beautiful or So What
It’s Paul Simon. In case you didn’t notice. No further explanation is required.

Tartar Lamb II - Polyimage of Known Exits
Not to blow my own trumpet, but I helped in a very small way to get this record made, by donating to its kickstarter fund along with many other far more generous people. Tartar Lamb II is a satellite of Kayo Dot, and a development of Tartar Lamb. It’s largely abstract music, very composed, but also very free tempo.

Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning
I have not listened to this record nearly as much as I would like to, partially because it’s quite long, and partially because as previously mentioned, my free time tends to get eaten up with more important social concerns.

In no particular order,

10.) WU LYF (World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation) - Go Tell Fire to the Mountain

WU LYF was one of those heavy trending bands that I managed to hear a song of throughout the year. I was completely convinced that they would be entirely overrated but Go Tell Fire to the Mountain ended up being one of the best I've heard this year.

9.) Atmosphere - The Family Sign

Atmosphere is part of Rhymesayers, meaning that IMO they are some of the best rappers out there. So buying The Family Sign was vital for my rap music collection.

8.) Battles - Gloss Drop

Ice Cream.

7.) Childish Gambino - Camp

I used to dream every night, now I never dream at all
Hopin' that it's cause I'm livin' everything I want

2011, Year of the Gambino.

The truth is we still struggle on a different plane
7 dollars an hour, WIC vouchers, it's all the same

6.) Toro Y Moi - Underneath the Pine

Not as good as Causers of This, but still top of 2011 and second best Chillwave album of the year.

5.) Das Racist - Relax

Das Racist are really really good at what they do and they finish off my year of listening to rap.

4.) Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Self-titled

Weird and spacey and great.

3.) Yuck - self-titled

Yuck is a shoegaze band from Britain and I thought Yuck would be alot worse than it ended being.

2.) Whirl - Distressor EP

Whirl is Canadian (?) Shoegaze and I can say easily that this is my second favorite album of the year. Just because of its various mixes and frantic but still somehow calm guitarwork It's weird and it has be heard to be believed.

1.) Summer Camp - Welcome to Condale

Summer Camp is British Indie Rock, and I have reason to believe they might be the next biggest thing on the scene. I haven't been this excited for a band since I first heard Sufer Blood.

Honorable Mentions:
Cults - Self-titled
Action Bronson - Dr. Lector
Kanye West + Jay-Z - Watch the Throne

I'll give my Top Songs and feelings for next year in another post.

I don't like being on the bandwagon but mine is definitely Earl, I love really lyrical rap music. Domo is a beast though, him and Mike are really underrated. I'm liking Syd's group The Internet though, they're a nice contrast.

The whole putting stuff in order always vexes me. Anyhow, here's an attempt that will likely be incorrect by tomorrow, or the next day.

Albums only. singles aren't my thing, really.

1. Rwake - Rest
2. The Atlas Moth - An Ache for the Distance
3. Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Lust
4. 40 Watt Sun - The Inside Room
5. Gillian Welch - The Harrow & The Harvest
6. Graveyard - Hsingen Blues
7. Mars Red Sky - Mars Red Sky
8. Red Fang - Murder The Mountains
9. Alison Krauss & Union Station - Paper Airplane
10. The Flight of Sleepnir - Essence of Nine

geez, thats an awful list. no Jesse Sykes, Cerebral Ballzy, Cunninglynguists, Tedeschi Trucks Band....

Meh. I guess Ill stick with it, even though I'm totally wrong.

There's 8 records that seem to be jumping to me right now. I'm sure I'm missing some, but what the hell, here goes nothing. No particular order:

J. Mascis - Several Shades of Why
I think Gildermershina summed things up nicely with this one. Great player, great guy, and I actually have found myself enjoying this record more than a number of his earlier Dinosaur Jr. albums.

All Pigs Must Die - God is War
A great hardcore album that practically features everything except hardcore. It's a pissed off, mean album that ranges from sludge to punk fueled death metal and everything in-between, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it a number of listens through.

American Heritage - Sedentary
All I can say about American Heritage is that they are, in many ways, the embodiment of where I wish Mastodon had progressed to in their career. Another raw, in your face album that manages to really keep things nice and compact while still maintaining the listener's interest.

Touche Amore - Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me
Incredibly emotional, gripping melodic hardcore, with an added emphasis on song writing as compared to their last effort. Spot on engineering as well.

True Widow - As High as the Highest Heavens and From the Center to the Circumference of the Earth
A great band, with a great album on their hands. Really enticing songs and a great flow to the record. Easily one of my favorites of the year.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Ritual
All the rambling and attention I give these guys put aside, Ritual is, in my opinion, their best album to date. It's the first album that truly has a unique, definitively Black Dahlia Murder vibe to it. The songs are catchier, there's more diversity, and I think it's finally safe to say they've shed their "At The Gates rip-off" title. Probably my personal favorite of 2011.

Horned Almighty - Necro Spirituals
Solid modern black metal album, I feel like these guys and Wolves in the Throne Room are really leading the way and pushing the boundaries of black metal these days.

Yuck - Yuck
Catchy, fun songs that don't need high fidelity, polished engineering to sound awesome. A great, simple record.

The new Battles, Narrows, Tombs and Anthrax were great as well, but I don't feel like I've devoted enough time to them to really feel good about putting any in my top 10.

blink-182 - Neighbourhoods
