KeepItReal101: I think it's great that Alex came out but that video was doing the most. Seemed like a big ole publicity call as she continues the trend as the "gay" band member. No one cares that you are a lesbian, going all scholar for Youtube was unneeded. |

Mediva: If you want to be seen and treated as the norm then stop making your sexuality a taboo, Be who you want to be and go on with your life. Making these videos doesn't help the cause and makes it seems like its something unnatural, which it is not. |

DaisyChain: @Mediva Talking about something in the open is absolutely the opposite of making it taboo. Comments like yours, while I'm sure are well meaning, are obviously from someone who has never experienced two things. 1. Having to pretend you're something you're not because societal norms make you afraid of what people will think. And 2. The fear of people finding out before you're ready and the way that strips you of the power to publicly be yourself when you're ready to be. Making these videos absolutely does help the cause. It goes a long way to normalising LGBT issues and shows young people who are experiencing the 2 things I mention above that they are not alone in that and that they don't have to be scared. If you think that's not a positive message, then I don't know what to tell you. |

Mediva: @DaisyChain I do believe it is a positive message but doing all of these extra things just feeds the fire of unnecessary negativity. I'm just saying is that if people just loved who they wanted to love with out making it this big announcement, which everyone in the LGTBQ is trying to end, then more people would just be who they wanted to be with out needing to come out, And maybe it is because I come from a country that is very open to homosexuality and many of my friends never needing to "come out" has affected my view on it. My final stand is love who you want to love with out answering anyone about it. |

DaisyChain: @Mediva the dream is that one day we can live in a world where no one needs to come out. Sadly we're not there yet. It's still seen as a curiosity and something that fuels scandal in the media at times, which is an awful thing to have to deal with if you're still not out. People can't just love who they love without coming out because other people will make it into some big scandalous event when they find out. But people can keep that power for themselves by coming out at a time and place that makes them comfortable and frees them to be themselves. These videos are not "extra things," these videos are people empowering themselves, and that's perfect. Besides, the more people talk about these issues, the more normal they become. 50 years ago people were not talking about being gay, and in many countries it was punishable with jail time. Persecution. Now, in the couple of decades since it became something public, we've come so far. Let's not stifle freedom of speech over something that's becoming so much more normal than it once was. Love conquers all. |
