TRACK 1: Machine (Instrumental)

The album begins with a very faint sounding drum machine line fading in as if from far away. A few distorted guitar squeals are heard, before loud, shattering percussive synth hits echo throughout the track. Garbled synthesizer sounds play, as a slow, bass driven beat comes in, only barely audible in the background. This goes on for about a minute until a crash hit is heard, and Trent's voice can be heard shouting..

1! 2! 3! Fuck!

and the song segues into the second track, 'Crucified'

TRACK 2: Crucified

Seamlessly moving into the second track, a crash hit is heard before a steady drum machine beat comes in, accompanied by bright, flanger-soaked guitar chords and a rumbling bass synth line. This goes on for a bit before the lyrics come in, softly but bitterly recited by Trent,

you are just a spear stuck in my side
you are just a sore that i can't hide
tried to cleanse and bandage all my welts
you are just a weal upon my pelt

if the cameras flashed and suddenly they died
would you wag your finger and say don't come inside?
would you touch me with your fingertips?
would you let me lick the poison off your lips?


The guitar drops away as Trent spitefully sings the chorus in his powerful voice, each line punctuated by a loud synth crash,

The guitar returns, a lot of echo on it, and the second verse is sung, Trent's voice becoming more intense,

i don't think that i'll be able to stay sane
with all the alcohol that's pulsing through my veins

and if you said "suck my cock" i'd get on my knees for you
there's very little that i wouldn't do

This time, the guitar becomes distorted and plays along as the chorus is sung,

The song begins with a backmasking section of distorted guitar chords and sounds before a tinny sounding synth line comes in. After accompanying the vocals for the first two lines, it is replaced by rumbling, distorted bass and a steady, even drum beat,

the morning scatters in

to spite my coffee cup
and i swallow my pills
that i chase with my drink
and i need to put myself away
before i can even think

the walls are shaking and splitting
and with the paper i'm sitting
trying to jot my money maker on the lines

The chorus comes in, atmospheric synths accompanying powerchords on guitar and the same rumbling bass as before,

The rest of the instruments drop out until it's just the drum and bass lines, and the verse comes back in, Trent's voice sounding apathetic and dull,

The song begins with a very uptempo drum machine beat that continues for a bit until a single guitar comes in, playing a frenetic, odd riff. The song has a much more upbeat, alternative rockish feel than the other metalish songs on the record. Trent's vocals are fast and sung with enthusiasm,

The song is much more agressive and industrial metal styled than the rest of the album. Trent's vocals start off whispered, backed by the steady drum beat and chugging guitars,

TRACK 11: The Saboteur

The song is a departure from Shadowmachine's previously electronically based style, instead, the song is based around very minimalist, clean guitars, and a steady drum beat, with atmospheric electronic accents in the background. After a bit of guitar and drum work, Trent's vocals come in, soft, almost whispered,

i just don't understand
how you can be the perfect liar and

how you and everyone conspire ,just

The guitars get louder, and a bit distorted, while Trent spits the lyrics out with genuine sounding disgust,

lying again and again
foot in mouth and head up ass

The song becomes a bit more intense for the chorus, Trent's vocals becoming full and soaring, although the guitar remains reserved, only the drum beat becomes more frantic,

The vocals fade away, leaving only the soft, clean guitar and steady drum beat for a few seconds, before the second verse starts,

TRACK 12: Devil's Night

The song begins with a distorted sample from an episode of Futarama

"Everything your body does is natural - except masturbation! That's just plain wrong!"


A slow, groovy bassline comes in, almost sounding porn-worthy. There's lots of ambient noise in the background. Trent's voice comes in, soft and seductive, speaking slowly,

she has her pretty little picture
up on the pretty shiny screen
she looks like she's stepped right out of
one of those fashion magazines


if she asked me to, i'd let her break my neck
i think i'm gonna faint, and i haven't even touched her yet
the mere thought of her makes me break out in sweat
it's the greatest fucking rush that you can get


For the chorus, a stuttering tremolo guitar comes in to accompany the bass and drums, while Trent's voice becomes agressive, nearly shouted,

The intensity of the chorus is forgotten as all the instruments but the bass drop out and Trent's voice returns to a near whisper,

tangled hair and beads of sweat
falling in my eyes

Their is a sample of an explosion, and the chorus returns, the drums becoming more prominent in the mix as Trent screams over the deceptively soft guitar and bass, which slowly fade out,

TRACK 13: Rosary

The song begins with a loud drum fill which leads into a heavy, groovy guitar riff. This song, like 'The Saboteur' and 'Shine' has a more organic sound, based on instruments instead of electronics. After a bit of intro, the riff turns into simple, muted notes while Trent softly sings the first verse,

The song takes an agressive turn, the chunky guitar riffs coming back as Trent's voice fluctuates between soft spite and harsh screaming,

TRACK 14: Cigarette Burns

The track starts off with a lot of ambient noise, garbled voices, and synth sounds. The music fades in very slowly, rising to a crescendo of white noise before going completely silent. A sample of dialogue from an old 50's educational video is played, the announcer's voice crisp and formal,

"One of nature's greatest wonders is the ability of the human ear to distinguish among the millions of sounds around us - listen"

All the noise that previously disappeared returns ten fold, and a harsh, grinding EBM beat comes in. Musically, the song doesn't change much for the rest of the track, although the sounds of whispers and people talking get louder in the background. Trent's vocals are sung lowly, with a lot of echo on them, and is hard to distinguish at times, giving the track a very eerie feel.

i'm walking on barbed wire
with my blinders on
i'm talking about things that
i'm not sure are going on
my hand traces the concrete
touching blood and spit and sweat
am i feeling what just happened?
or has it even happened yet?

close the door, shut those windows tight
tried to lie, convince myself
