“This Is A Wasteland” is the debut album from American rock duo ‘Mutual Addiction’, the creative project from solo musicians ‘Julia Volkova’ and ‘Alex Simms’. Originally thought up in October 2013 after the two first met and recorded a track together in June 2013. The origin of this project began at the Reckless Infinity tour towards the end of last year as the two musicians rekindled their friendship and were both wondering what the next year had in store for them. At the time, Alex Simms was one of the rising stars of the industry, with a successful debut album, a string of hit singles, it appeared that the momentum was with the young post-hardcore musician, Julia Volkova on the other hand had been a big name in the industry for the past three to four years, her previous album ‘Haunted’ was praised obsessively but creatively she admits she was at a crossroads, even stating that a new solo album in 2014 would have been extremely unlikely.
But the 27 year old rock chick admits that she was reignited by the vibrant young star Simms, giving her a new enthusiasm in her life. The pair made a habit of hanging out regularly during the Reckless Infinity tour, which in itself sparked inspiration for the next project for both of them, they wrote together and within three weeks they had a batch of songs that they considered to be special, the tracks seemingly linking and interspersing with one another at ease.
Following the Reckless Infinity Tour, the duo locked themselves away in a recording studio for a couple of months, resurfacing to announce that they would indeed be working together in this form and that a full-length album would be complemented by a touring schedule. Both sides enthused about the prospect of performing these songs together live onstage on a nightly basis and with the release of their first single ‘Bad Influence’ peaking at number #2 on the singles charts, it appears that there is a strong support for the combination of ‘Alex Simms’ and ‘Julia Volkova’, described as an unlikely partnership, it’s a relationship that has been reported to be romantic (at times) and still unconfirmed by either parties but it’s expected to be the bearer of old fashioned rock and roll.
The album was recorded between November 2013 through to January 2014 at ‘Half-Moon Studios’ in Las Vegas, Nevada and was produced by both Simms and Volkova. It’s to be released through ‘Songs to Love and Die By’ the original home of Simms and more recently Julia has been added to that roster. The record was preceded by debut single ‘Bad Influence’ the opening track from the album and the album will begin streaming via Alternative Press from February 8th, 2014. Being released fully on February 15, 2014.
