Kara Emilia Romero (born October 22, 1996) is a Spanish-American singer-songwriter, musician, and actress known for her raw and honest lyricism, genre-defying sound, and emotionally charged performances in a variety of different genres. Born in Seville, Spain to Rodrigo and Gabriella Romero, Kara’s life was forever shaped by the loss of her mother at just four years old. Raised solely by her father, a talent agent in the Spanish film industry, Kara’s early years were marked by both love and grief—a duality that would come to define her artistic voice.
At age eight, Kara and her father relocated to Manhattan, New York, leaving behind her homeland for a new beginning. Bilingual in Spanish and English, she gradually distanced herself from her native language, associating it too closely with memories of her mother. In interviews, she has shared that hearing Spanish evokes her mother’s voice—something too painful to relive regularly.
A gifted student with a passion for the arts, Kara gravitated toward music, theatre, and visual art from an early age. However, by her early teens, she began to rebel against the structure of school and authority, immersing herself in New York’s street culture and the underground music scene. Influenced by punk, grunge, and alt-rock legends like Pearl Jam, The Misfits, and The Pixies, as well as icons like Prince, Michael Jackson, and Tupac, Kara's musical foundation was as eclectic as it was intense.
At just fifteen, following a heated dispute with her father, Kara spent three months in a Brooklyn homeless shelter. It was a dark chapter, marked by isolation, substance use, and emotional volatility—but it was also when she discovered the power of music as a form of survival. She began performing at open-mic nights across the city, and in early 2012, a viral performance at The Charleston in Brooklyn catapulted her into public consciousness. Her debut single, “My Poison Ivy Lips,” an unapologetic alt-rock anthem, peaked at #4 and led to a support slot on Alicia Lena’s world tour.
Despite the early success, Kara struggled to navigate the industry. Without a label and fiercely independent, she vanished from the spotlight between 2012 and 2015—years she later described as marked by “reckless abandon and emotional self-destruction.” It wasn’t until signing with indie label Just Record in 2015 that Kara began her comeback, both personally and professionally. Her time with Just Record marked a turning point. The label supported her both artistically and mentally, encouraging her to explore her sound without deadlines and guiding her toward consistent therapy—something Kara credits with saving her life. Her music shifted from gritty alt-rock toward a more introspective, hip-hop-infused sound that reflected her evolution.
Her 2016 debut album, “Do I Have Your Attention Now?” featured four Top 10 singles including the socially charged “We Are One,” establishing her as not just an artist, but a voice for her generation. The years that followed included the release of the "Raising Hell" EP, standout single “Bulletproof Barbie,” and an extended period away from music that saw Kara travel, reconnect with family, and prioritize healing.

In 2020, she marked her return with the single “Cruel As Shit” and “The Therapy Sessions (Vol. I)”—a deeply personal project rooted in her own journey through therapy. Her reworked protest track “Are We One?” (feat. Jay-C and Stephanie Fierce), released in response to the murder of George Floyd, became a cultural moment and raised funds for Black Lives Matter charities.
Her sophomore album, recorded in 2022, marked her full-circle moment. With tracks like the introspective #1 single “Signpost”, the empowering “When Will We Get Our Flowers”—a feminist anthem following the Roe v. Wade reversal—and hard-hitting singles like “Hit List” and “DTF” (feat. Younghood), Kara delivered the most critically and commercially successful year of her career.
2023 saw the release of “Twenty-Four Seven” (feat. Drew Westbrook) and the announcement of her long-awaited sophomore album and first solo world tour, cementing her place as one of the most fearless, emotionally resonant artists of her generation.
Kara Romero’s momentum continued into 2024 with a string of bold, genre-bending releases that cemented her as a powerhouse collaborator as well as a solo artist. On June 20, 2024, she reunited with frequent collaborator Younghood for the fiery single “Love Dealer”—a sultry, sharp-tongued track that quickly resonated with fans and critics alike and became the catalyst for future collaborations between the pair. Blending sensuality with emotional volatility, the song debuted at #1, marking another milestone in Kara’s music catalogue.
Kara kicked off 2025 with the explosive January 8 release of “Toxic Shit”, once again teaming up with Younghood. The single, a raw, unfiltered take on modern relationships and emotional chaos, peaked at #2, becoming an early-year anthem and social media favourite. The duo’s undeniable chemistry reached its creative peak with the release of their joint EP, “The Bedroom Sessions (Vol. I)”, on January 25, 2025. The project, entirely co-written and co-produced by the two artists, debuted at #1 and was lauded for its intimate soundscape, late-night vibes, and confessional lyrical content that caught the attention due to its vivid and graphic nature.
In addition to her solo and collaborative work, Kara also made a powerful impact as a featured artist. She appeared on “Model Citizen”—a March 8, 2024 release by Billy Khan, that also featured Kidd Amaze. The high-energy, politically tinged anthem soared to #1 on the charts, further highlighting Kara’s versatility and ability to amplify any track with her signature vocal talents.
Together, these projects showcase a fearless new chapter in Kara Romero’s artistic evolution—one where collaboration meets clarity, and every release pushes emotional and creative boundaries. As she continues to experiment with sound and storytelling, Kara remains a force in contemporary music: unrelenting, unapologetic, and completely her own.
