Maddie Urie (born ‘Madison Noelle Urie’, January 27, 1994) is an American musician and songwriter from San Diego, California. Her music career began back in 2010 at the age of 16 when she was signed by ‘Shooting Star Records’ as part of a male/female pop duo named ‘Two Equals Three’, during their brief time in the music industry they released a self-titled E.P and performed at the 2010 Warped Tour. It was a short lived and relatively unhappy start in the music industry for Maddie Urie as she struggled to accept the lack of control over the act and battled constantly against decisions made by those that brought the act into the industry. There was even more pressure on her as her siblings Matt and James Urie were quickly carving a name for themselves within the rock and alternative scene, a scene which Maddie herself had preference, but executive decisions and control of the duos direction were out of her control and those ‘decision makers’ saw them very much as a bubble-gum pop act primarily aimed at children and young teenagers. Maddie took her stand and gave it all up by the end of 2010 and the act are barely remembered at all within the music industry.

Following the decision to leave ‘Two Equals Three’, Maddie took herself completely out of the industry while her brothers Matt and James were on a rapid ascension towards the very top of the industry. Maddie moved away from the states and found herself in Spain, where she begun working out there as a waitress and holiday rep, occasionally returning to the U.S on the rare periods that time would allow. But it was this time away where Maddie was able to regroup and forget about her perceived ‘failed’ attempts in the industry and the style and influence of European electronic dance music proved to be an unexpected but pleasant surprise on Maddie. She continued writing music and playing whenever she could and by 2012 she was performing regularly around Spain and occasionally other European countries, of course not to much attention and financially she still had to maintain a couple of jobs during this time.

But a lucky break came for Maddie in late 2012, as the well-known rock band ‘Riot! In The Boulevard’ arrived in Spain, she had met the members in the past as the band bonded with fellow pop-punkers ‘Suburban Sunrise’ which included her brother Matt. Maddie made sure to catch the concert by ‘Riot!’ with her brother Matt, and his friendship with them was enough for them to catch up backstage following the performance. Quickly Maddie and lead singer Amy Meyer hit it off, the frontwoman agreed to catch a performance by Maddie the next evening and keeping true to her word she was in the crowd of approximately seventy to eighty people. Amy Meyer at the time was quietly working on plans to launch her own record label in the new year and was impressed by Maddie’s performance, noting the fact that despite playing in front of what was a “difficult” and “small” audience, Maddie left everything she had on the stage. This led to the pair continuing to keep in touch and in January 2013, Maddie was invited out to New York City to spend some time with Meyer, this resulted in an impromptu performance by the pair at a local club and following the launch of her record label ‘Songs to Love and Die By’, Amy Meyer announced the first signing to the roster being ‘Maddie Urie’.

Maddie quickly got to working on music, spending the early months of 2013 inside a recording studio writing and recording the songs that would form her debut album. A debut solo single came in March 2013 titled ‘Put On A Brave Face’ and broke the top ten of the singles charts, creating a small level of interest in the musician ahead of her album launch later in the summer. On June 23, 2013 she released her debut album, titled ‘Young Blood’ it saw the singer creating the album and music that she had always envisioned for herself, influences ranging from electro-pop, synth and pop-punk to alternative rock as the record weaved around genres all built around simple and effective lyrics. The buzz for Maddie wore down following the release of the album, her past experiences in the industry putting her off from “being seen too much”, she preferred to let her fans enjoy the music that she crafted without being force-fed her music. She released one more single from the album, in September 2013, she put out a track titled ‘Such Fragile Little Things’, the simplistic nature of the song connected largely with her fanbase, once again she had another single break the top ten of the singles chart.

Since late 2013, Maddie Urie has largely spent her time writing new music as a follow-up to her debut record ‘Young Blood’, the production of the record is nearing its later stages and is likely to be titled ‘Warzones’ with a release date in late July slated. However there is a couple of singles being prepared for release before the record, which means that this summer we will see the fully-fledged return of ‘Maddie Urie’.

Format: CD Single, Digital Download, Weekly Airplay

Genre: Electro-Pop, Pop-Rock, Alternative Rock

Written: May 2014
Writer: Maddie Urie
Producer(s): Maddie Urie, Christian Fallon

“Warzones” is the fourth official solo single from American electro-pop/pop-rock singer-songwriter ‘Maddie Urie’. To be taken from her upcoming sophomore album it will be the title track from the record and once again see’s Urie blending electro-pop elements with pop-rock. The track was written entirely by Maddie Urie and was produced by the singer alongside regular collaborator ‘Christian Fallon’ at Half-Moon Studios in Las Vegas, Nevada around June 2014 while recording her upcoming sophomore album which is expected to be released around September. The track follows May’s return effort ‘We Were Young Once’ which peaked at number #7 on the singles charts and this latest release is expected to be the final single before the album launch in September.

The track heavily features a guitar and keyboard combination which helps highlight the unique vocal delivery from Urie. Her quirky electronic/rock vocal helps highlight certain moments of the song. The songs main stand-out is its theme of fighting against judgement and hatred from people, it’s chorus although uses the phrase warzones relates to the battle that people face every day against other people as opposed to the traditional sense of the phrase warzones, it’s chorus references it’s true meaning, ‘We’re battling life/fighting in these warzones/We’re putting up our shields/Standing all alone/We’re battling life/Fighting in these warzones/We’re putting up our shields/Standing all alone.’ Again in the very next verse she uses the metaphor even further, ‘They throw pity at you/Throw it like a hand grenade/Don’t realize the destruction that their decisions can make/And the effect that their words can have on a soul/Can haunt and wound/Until we grow old.’

The song will be released today on August 9, 2014 and will be made available as a CD Single, Digital Download and made available to Airplay through record label ‘Songs to Love and Die By’

Lyrics

“From the endless nights, to the empty days
To the glances and stares
Of the people standing in our way
The hatred and ridicule
The words like knives
They cut so deep
Cut so fine

One step forward and two steps back
It seems each day
We come under attack
We learn to hide our true selves from everyone around
We pretend to be someone we’re not
Well perhaps the lost are just never found

We’re battling life
Fighting in these warzones
We’re putting up our shields
Standing all alone
We’re battling life
Fighting in these warzones
We’re putting up our shields
Standing all alone

They throw pity at you
Throw it like a hand grenade
Don’t realize the destruction that their decisions can make
And the effect that their words can have on a soul
Can haunt and wound
Until we grow old
And we cling on for our life
We pray for the strength to carry on
But we’re not built to be warriors
We’re not all built that strong

We’re battling life
Fighting in these warzones
We’re putting up our shields
Standing all alone
We’re battling life
Fighting in these warzones
We’re putting up our shields
Standing all alone

One step forward and two steps back
It seems each day
We come under attack
We learn to hide our true selves from everyone around
We pretend to be someone we’re not
Well perhaps the lost are just never found”

Maddie: Awwh thanks Jennifer! I try my best, glad that you like it and relate to it! :)

Maddie: Wow! thanks Nadia, that's crazy to hear you say that haha the truth is that I spend so much time working on every tiny little detail of my music, that's kinda why I've not got a lot of singles to my name and stuff. But it's so awesome to hear that you enjoy my music and are looking for to my new stuff too! :)

Maddie: Ahhh don't be silly, I'm not one of your favourites! haha I've done nothing to warrant that sort of praise, thank you though, you're incredibly sweet! :)
