Meet The Band! Mitch Fien
Birth Name; Mitchell Alexander Fien Born; November 21, 1991 Origin; Atlanta, Georgia, U.S Current Residence; Ocala, Florida, U.S Genres; Pop Punk, Post-Hardcore, Alternative Rock, Melodic Hardcore Occupations; Musician, Lyricist, Songwriter Instruments; Vocals Years Active; 2008 – present Labels; None
At what age did you realize that being a musician was what you wanted to be and as a career? I think it was when I was about 11 or 12 and I started going to guitar lessons. And started singing and learning how to scream.
If you could choose to be in any other band for one show, which band would you play with? Ooh that’s a tough one. Probably A Day to Remember, they’re great.
You guys have toured a lot! What are some of the great parts of being on the road? Any memorable stories to share? I forget where we were when it happened, but, Bradie and Jake were really drunk one night and we were all walking back to the hotel or whatever after we played, and then there was this hobo, wait is hobo politically correct? Homeless person. There was this homeless person, who was walking on the opposite side of the road to us, and I don’t really remember how it happened but somehow Jake and Bradie got into a fight with the homeless dude and got absolutely destroyed. Anyway, we ended up spending the night in the hospital with them and Bradie had to get 15 stiches above his eye brow.
Is it tough playing in a band? Does luck play a part too? It can be tough sometimes, but I love doing it and I really can’t imagine doing anything else for a living.
Do you hold a job? Does playing in a band make you spend a lot? I do not have, nor have I ever had a job, actually. I only graduated from high school two years ago and we’ve been touring non-stop since then so I never really had time for a job. I’m probably the smartest in terms of how to spend my money within the band, I don’t waste it too much.
Did you go to singing lessons or are you self-taught? I never had lessons, but my older brother taught me how to scream.
What has been your favourite show to play in your entire touring experience? Any show where the fans are really up close to us. It’s really great to be able to get up-close-and-personal with all our fans.
At the initial stages of forming Down But Not Out, did you ever expect the band to become so successful and reach out to listeners beyond Ocala? Definitely not after our first practice! That was pretty awful. But as soon as we started getting some songs together i thought we had something good going on.
Jake Cohen
Birth Name; Jacob Cohen Born; September 8, 1990 Origin; Miami, Florida, U.S Current Residence; Ocala, Florida, U.S Genres; Pop Punk, Melodic Hardcore, Alternative Rock, Pop Rock Occupations; Musician, Guitarist, Songwriter Instruments; Vocals, Guitar Years Active; 2008 - present Labels; None
At what age did you realize that being a musician was what you wanted to be and as a career? I’ve always loved music but for a while football was my main love. I loved watching it at least, I never actually had a go of it myself. Then when I was fifteen, I tried out for the school football team. Needless to say, with my physique, I did not get in. After that I decided I wanted to be a musician and pretty much devoted all my time to music.
If you could choose to be in any other band for one show, which band would you play with? Blink-182. They are just the best.
You guys have toured a lot! What are some of the great parts of being on the road? Any memorable stories to share? The time Bradie and I got destroyed by a hobo with a stick. That’s pretty fucking memorable I guess. And the great parts of touring is seeing new places, meeting new people, stopping at every McDonalds we go past and getting to meet our fans.
Is it tough playing in a band? Does luck play a part too? I don’t find it tough at all. I mean, we get to go around the country playing music that means something to us to fans that love us. I don’t think there’d be any better job in the world.
Do you hold a job? Does playing in a band make you spend a lot? I worked at a coffee shop for about six months a few years ago but apart from that I’ve never had a real job. Work’s not really my thing. And yes I do spend quite a lot.
Did you go for guitar lessons or are you self-taught? My dad taught me the basics on guitar and I kinda just took it from there. I didn’t go to any lessons.
What has been your favourite show to play in your entire touring experience? Last month in Ocala. We’d been touring for just under a year and it was the last show of the tour, and it was in front of our home crowd. There was so many kids there, it was crazy.
At the initial stages of forming Down But Not Out, did you ever expect the band to become so successful and reach out to listeners beyond Ocala? Yeah, I’ve always felt that we had something special but we still have a lot more growing to do.
Ben Campbell
Birth Name; Benjamin Clayton Campbell Born; June 13, 1990 Origin; Ocala, Florida, U.S Current Residence; Ocala, Florida, U.S Genres; Pop Punk, Alternative Rock, Post-Hardcore Occupations; Musician, Guitarist, Songwriter Instruments; Guitar, Vocals Years Active; 2008 - present Labels; None
At what age did you realize that being a musician was what you wanted to be and as a career? When I failed school and realised there was nothing else for me to do. Not really. I've always loved being in a band. I suppose it was probably when things started taking off with Down But Not Out, I knew I didn't want to be doing anything else.
If you could choose to be in any other band for one show, which band would you play with? Nickelback, without a doubt. That would be the funniest show. I would do whatever I could to make them sound even worse than they already do but that would be a tough job.
You guys have toured a lot! What are some of the great parts of being on the road? Any memorable stories to share? I hate touring. I don’t know why I said that, I actually love touring, its good fun. Travelling to new places and playing shows are definitely my favourite things. I've got memorable stories, but they all involve me doing something embarrassing. I'm sure one of the other guys will fill you in.
Do you hold a job? Does playing in a band make you spend a lot? No i don't, and yeah it can be expensive if you need new gear or you’re on tour and eating a lot of shit.
Did you go for guitar lessons or are you self-taught? Bit of both, really.
What has been your favourite show to play in your entire touring experience? The one in Ocala last month. That was fucking insane.
At the initial stages of forming Down But Not Out, did you ever expect the band to become so successful and reach out to listeners beyond Ocala? I wouldn't say expected. I always hoped it would turn out this way though, because what more could you want?
Bradie Pearce
Birth Name; Bradley Lewis Pearce Born; January 10, 1988 Origin; Ocala, Florida, U.S Current Residence; Ocala, Florida, U.S Genres; Pop Punk, Post-Hardcore, Melodic Hardcore, Alternative Rock Occupations; Musician, Bass Guitarist, Songwriter, Lyricist Instruments; Bass Guitar, Vocals Years Active; 2008 - present Labels; None
At what age did you realize that being a musician was what you wanted to be and as a career? As soon as I had my first band practice with a Punk band called Crazy Lollies or something outrageous like that. I think I was about 10 at the time.
If you could choose to be in any other band for one show, which band would you play with? New Found Glory! That would be fucking amazing. I actually met Chad and Jordan from New Found Glory a few years ago at a show and they were real cool guys.
You guys have toured a lot! What are some of the great parts of being on the road? Any memorable stories to share? I’m sure someone’s already talked about Jake and I getting bashed by the hobo so I’ll go with something different. Last year I staged dived off a stack of amps and pretty much shattered all the bones or whatever in my foot and spent a few days in hospital. I seem to be the one who’s always going to fucking hospital.
Do you hold a job? Does playing in a band make you spend a lot? No job anymore. Buying gear is expensive, but aside from that the band doesn't make me spend that much money.
Did you go for bass lessons or are you self-taught? I had guitar lessons but then got lazy and just decided to play bass. It seemed easier but it’s not a whole lot easier. What has been your favourite show to play in your entire touring experience? Ocala, last month. That was really fun.
At the initial stages of forming Down But Not Out, did you ever expect the band to become so successful and reach out to listeners beyond Ocala? You can only hope really. I guess everyone writes songs praying they would reach people who needed to hear them or actually appreciated them-so it's a total mind blowing thought to think people I don't know in places I've never been like the music we make.
Will Tanner
Birth Name; William James Tanner Born; March 29, 1987 Origin; Ocala, Florida, U.S Current Residence; Ocala, Florida, U.S Genres; Post-Hardcore, Pop Punk, Melodic Hardcore, Alternative Rock Occupations; Musician, Drummer, Songwriter Instruments; Drums, Percussion Years Active; 2008 - present Labels; None
At what age did you realize that being a musician was what you wanted to be and as a career? I think when i was like 8 or 9, when i started playing piano.
If you could choose to be in any other band for one show, which band would you play with? I’m going to have change this question to two bands. I would play in both Thrice and Rufio. My two favourite bands in the world.
You guys have toured a lot! What are some of the great parts of being on the road? Any memorable stories to share? Some of the great parts are being with your best friends and sharing every great experience you have. You would of heard this from the other guy’s but Bradie and Jake getting half-killed by the hobo was hilarious.
Do you hold a job? Does playing in a band make you spend a lot? I used to have a job, but now i do the band full-time. And yes it does. Starting out costs a lot more though to get all the gear you want.
Did you go for drumming lessons or are you self-taught? Self-taught. I would just try to play along to songs i liked and got pretty good at it.
What has been your favourite show to play in your entire touring experience? I have a lot actually. My favourite ones are always the ones where the stage isn't too far from the crowd so the crowd stand right there singing along. That always makes it so good to play.
At the initial stages of forming Down But Not Out, did you ever expect the band to become so successful and reach out to listeners beyond Ocala? I didn't even think that people outside of Ocala were going to listen to us. It’s always a surprise when people from the other side of the country talk to us saying they love our music. It’s so weird but a very good feeling. |
