Thunder CROWN - PART 1 (Scroll for first six songs) The girls kick off their comeback album with a bang, starting with number one single "Strike Up the Band", a ferociously unapologetic EDM pop track with provocative lyrics that fits in perfectly with GirlSpice's discography. It's controversial, ridiculous and most importantly, down right dirty, all the makings of your average GirlSpice hit. While it thankfully doesn't give an indication of what's to come on the album, it's a great way to kick off the record, especially with it being the group's tenth, as it successfully incorporates everything GirlSpice embodies in pop music and celebrates that unashamedly. While Crown may be somewhat of an overall departure in GirlSpice's pure pop sound that usually follows throughout their albums, favouring slightly more urban influences this time, "Doctor Doctor" is another classic GirlSpice track through and through. Featuring a playful theme to the song, catchy lyrics and an irresistible pop beat, the girls clearly had their fanbase in mind when including this track on the record in order to appeal to some of the old-timers who have been following the group since their 2007 debut. While most songs on the album focus on one member specifically to give them each their time to shine, "Doctor Doctor" is pretty equally shared out, which is likely to make it a fan favourite from the record. While not being quite as brash or risky as "Strike Up the Band", the track makes for a safe, likely single choice thanks to its commercial sound and fun lyrics, which could score the girls another easy hit. "In a Dream" is track three on Crown and features perhaps the most experimental sound on the album as the girls' relaxed, distorted vocals blend perfectly with the trippy, summery electronic pop sound of the track. It's not quite your average club banger from GirlSpice and features more sweet, innocent lyrics from the group as they sing "Don't take away the sweetness of this feeling / I'm deep in the bliss of a kiss in a dream". Sophia takes lead on the track, a suitable fit for the style of the song as her light, airy vocals work perfectly with its uplifting, dreamy feel, while the girls sing together on the immensely catchy chorus that has all the makings of a bona fide GS classic. "Clear as Crystal" could mostly be compared to lead single "Strike Up the Band" for its energetic EDM sound and while the two tracks don't accurately represent the album's entire sound, they certainly bring the tempo up, throwing some club-ready GirlSpice tracks into the mix. It marks the last heavily electronic/pop inspired sound on the album before the girls showcase their more urban tracks that start to first appear mid-way through Crown. GirlSpice's most successful solo member, Nadia Berry, takes lead on the bold track and her powerful vocals match perfectly with the song, its highlight being the explosive dance breakdown following the chorus featuring prominent horns. Once again, it's a unique sound to hear Berry's voice over the track and showcases her versatility as a vocalist. "Good Lookin'" shows the first signs of the more urban approach taken to the album and while it's still a catchy pop track, the blend of the two genres makes for a refreshing twist on your average GirlSpice hit and one that surprisingly works well with their vocals. Chantal takes the lead on the song with charismatic, feisty vocals drenched in attitude, her outspoken personality matching perfectly with sassy lyrics such as "Don't wanna hear the same old lines / I've heard 'em a thousand times". It's nothing extraordinary or all that different and the lyrics leave a lot to be desired, but if you don't over think the track and enjoy it for what it is, which you should do with most GirlSpice hits, then it's entirely enjoyable. GirlSpice's Crown takes a sexy, sultry turn for 80s inspired track six, "Slow", and the track's subject comes as no surprise to the listener as the girls croon "Slow, slow, real slow, slow / Show me what you're working with / Down low, low" over a slick mid-tempo production with hints of throwback disco. If there was any worry about the group being vocally lacking without Kimberly's presence, this is the song to go to, they harmonise perfectly together on the chorus and sound both impressive, yet sexy. No one's over singing or ruining the nature of the relaxed track, it's like soothing honey to the ears and proves their vocals are perfect for songs like "Slow". It's likely to be a grower with fans and may not be a standout for some on the album, but it certainly does its job of adding some sensual, sophisticated vibes to the record. I don't know how you managed to get to album TEN with these girls but it's truly an amazing feat :P I remember when I first came on the forums and they were big and they've been huge ever since lol, so it's really hard to keep an act like that for so long without people losing interest and stuff, kind of like in real life. They really pass the test of time, so again great job on all of this :)

With its production in a similar vein to the likes of Blood Orange, GirlSpice certainly begin to show their fans a side to them they've never seen, or more appropriately, heard in their music before. It's a more mature sound which fans were hoping for, but it's still a GirlSpice track at its core, full of hooks and uplifting lyrics where they sing together in the chorus, "No more teardrops / Let's scream it from the rooftops / Cause I wanna declare this love / True, true love". Following track "Delirious" shows GirlSpice at their vocally best as they impressively harmonise together on the track's infectious chorus, featuring old school 90s R&B girl group vibes. It's another song on the album that focuses on the group as a whole rather than individual members, demonstrating their strengths as a three-piece and how well their vocals blend together. While it's still an upbeat track, the production is a lot more minimal compared to the other uptempo songs on the album and their vocals altogether sound more raw, showing a more authentic side to GirlSpice. GirlSpice serve up another urban flavoured jam for "Messin' Around", featuring a DJ Mustard style club beat and racy lyrics where the girls sing, "I'll ride your throne if I can wear the crown / And we'll keep messin' around, messin' around". The track further showcases the new direction the group have taken on the record and their ability to change up their more standard pop sound. Chantal Hayes leads the track this time, clearly being the go-to girl for the more urban-oriented tracks, her voice meeting in the middle between the sweetness of Sophia's and the unique, yet powerful vocals of Nadia. Things slow down for one of the album's highlights, the sensual "Night Time Lovers", a similar track to "Slow", track six on the record, but one that arguably executes the moody, sexy vibe a lot more successfully as the group seductively croon over the track in unison. "Forget about the time and the early morning sounds / Let's just stay night time lovers", they sing in the track's chorus, featuring a similar lyrical theme to Berry's solo hit "One of Those Days". It's the only song on the record that the group sing completely together, and their vocals once again perfectly fit together for this atmospheric gem on Crown. Mid-tempo ballad "Sidekick" is a rarity on the record for its heartfelt vocal delivery and minimal production that's almost surprisingly gloomy, matching with the bittersweet nature of the lyrics, about overcoming the fear to fall in love. There's a rare vulnerability in the song that Nadia conveys with her emotional vocal performance, taking the lead on the track as she opens up the song, sounding almost as if it could fit on a previous solo record of hers. GirlSpice wrap up their tenth studio album with urban banger "Thunder", a refreshing note to end the album on after following two of the slowest songs on the album, but it's a welcome change and gives the record a last minute lease of life before its ending. Chantal opens up the track for what is perhaps her most impressive vocal performance ever given on record to date, her voice sounding a lot more powerful than what we're used to hearing from her. Despite the hard-hitting production and bold vocals, it's another lyrically sugary sweet track as the girls sing "I don't need to wonder, I know there ain't no other / Cause you hit me like a bolt of thunder" in the chorus. However, it helps to leave GirlSpice's mark on the track and provides a familiar element in a song that's otherwise entirely new ground for the group. Overall, Crown feels like a victory for the group, especially with a member down and the amount of pressure they're currently under to deliver big things on an highly anticipated upcoming world tour. There's a little something for every GirlSpice fan on the record, as well as a lot of new sounds that could reach a brand new audience for the group. The pop songs are quintessential GirlSpice and the R&B slow jams along with the urban up tempos are both unexpected and refreshing, making Crown a likely contender for GirlSpice's best release yet.

It's the variety in the sounds. You've been doing this since I was just a wee lassie, so I've always looked up to you, and then you took a break, and when you came back, I wondered how this era would shape up. It's like you've gone "wanna see what we can still do?" and then you've just gone and proved your not just modern, but that you can do it all...and better than everyone else. Timeless. I've had to buy two copies of this for when I wear the first one out...hmmm....some time this week I imagine.
