Metal madmen Mind have announced a new single to be released on November 15th this year... It will be a track on their upcoming album, Dream Serpent, which is to be released early next year. This is also the first song they've recorded off of the new album. Here's an explanation of the single...

Summers Edge

Starting with a melancholy acoustic guitar riff, this is a song that may catch you off guard. After a few repetitions of this riff, the sound of extremely heavy wind and high pitched screaming over the top of it appears, until the acoustic guitar stops completely. The screaming and wind noises also stop, so the track is silent for a few seconds. That is, until a manically heavy riff then forces its way into existence. Although it is crushingly and gargantually heavy, it has a melancholy feel to it. It has an unusual rhythmic pattern to it, similar to Meshuggah. Once the riff is firmly implanted into your mental system, the riff cuts out completely for a second or two. In this space, Jason wails the opening line in a half-pterodactyl, half-banshee like scream. Then it cuts back to the riff, except multiple violin arrangements can be faintly heard in the background. Over the top of this riff, Jason plays some mournful arpeggios on his guitar. The bass line is pretty simplistic here, just one note played extremely quickly. The drums are absolutely manic, with the bridge having possibly the toughest drum section in Minds catalogue. The verses are sung in quite a weary, low-pitched clean voice, although very quiet, muffled speaking can be heard faintly in the background. After the first verse, it comes to a mini bridge before the chorus. In this, Jason’s voice goes into a creepy high, child-like, sing-song voice. The riff dies down into a delicate, middle-eastern acoustic riff for that tiny segment, and then blows itself up into a bombastic, symphonic and downright heavy chorus. The riff on the chorus is like the riff on the verse, except more melodic. The lyrics are harshly screamed in a fairly high pitched manner here. This chorus-verse-chorus formula carries on until the end, where a bridge plays the whole song out. After the final chorus, the extremely heavy riff dies out, leaving the arpeggios and that section of lyrics being sung delicately over it. In the second part of the bridge, it speeds up a little bit and drums are re-introduced to the song. The lyrics are still sung melodically. After the last lyric, a quiet, bluesy solo plays the song out.

3. Falling of Nazareth (2009 Demo)

Lyrics:

I want to go home.

Serious,
Pain in the restful mind,
Gangrenous,
Love that I defined.

Far away,
My troubles rest inside their caves,
Decimate,
The people that you saved.

And we all know that your hiding...
This must be so complicated for you...

Summers edge...
Living on the edge of eternity,
Summers edge...
Be prepared for un-society.
You say that you’re pro-creation,
Yet you engage in annihilation.

Literally,
The stones that fall from the sky,
Murdering,
The ones you left behind.

I found a flaw,
In this plan you hold so close,
Merely hanging on,
To the ones you love the most.

Summers edge...
Living on the edge of eternity,
Summers edge...
Be prepared for un-society.
You say that you’re pro-creation,
Yet you engage in annihilation.

Summers edge...
Living on the edge of eternity,
Summers edge...
Be prepared for un-society.
You say that you’re pro-creation,
Yet you engage in annihilation.

How long do we suffer for you...
We all fall down...
How long is it until the curtain is drawn?
My heart doth drown!
Heart doth drown!

Say when,
Say how,
Say why,
I’ll be there for you,
Say when,
Say how,
Say why,
I’ll make my time for you...

I want to go home...

Jason:

“We were all unanimous on this being the first single. I think that personally, it is one of the best songs we have ever come up with. Musically, anyway. The reason why we chose this is because we feel it represents us in as short amount of time as possible. I don’t like to boast, but it has certain grandeur to it. This song isn’t just part of the concept of Dream Serpent, it’s actually got a deeper, emotional meaning towards it as well. As I’m sure you know, I went to Ecuador recently to visit my distant family and gain inspiration for my solo album Realm. Whilst there, I read up on some facts about Ecuador and something called the Cenepa War. My uncle was one of those 38 killed. I didn’t know him extremely well, I was only 9 at the time and had never visited Ecuador, but once I saw what he had done for the family and what a great man he was... I decided to write this in his memory. I just hope Mind fans enjoy this as much as we enjoyed making it.”

As well as announcing this new single, they have posted the tentative track listing:

1. The Eastern Winds
2. Amphigory Abyss
3. An Arrogant Silence
4. Summers Edge
5. Requiem of the Blackened Wings (The Sublime Madness)
6. The Nights Shore
7. Crystal Urn
8. Monolith
9. Engulfing Grace in Blood and Fire
10. The Creation Spectrum I: White
11. The Creation Spectrum II: Grey
12. The Creation Spectrum III: Black
13. Where the Sun Sets
14. Dream Serpent

More info to come.

Now this is what I'm talking about; a new Mind single! From what I've heard about Summer's Edge so far, it seems absolutely perfect. Calling something 'amazing' or 'perfect' seems like a really cliche and overused way to describe a song, but I'll always make an exception for this band. It was always going to be tough to release a follow-up to something as acclaimed as 'Shattered Fairytale', but you guys seem to have done it. I might be speaking a bit too soon, but I have incredibly high hopes for this album.

I really like the names given from the tracklisting of Dream Serpent, and I think I'm most excited for The Creation Spectrum trilogy. It seems like it'll be very experimental. I'm so excited to hear more about this!

It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. Hey guys. Just thought we'd give a little studio update for you. We have now completed the intro (The Eastern Winds), Summers Edge and a sorta interlude, if you like, well a 3 minute interlude, Engulfing Grace in Blood and Fire. We thought we'd ebtter get our first single and the easiest tracks outta the way first. Up next is Amphigory Abyss... this song is sonically difficult, so it'll take a while, probably. We also recorded a cover of Auto Rock by Mogwai but we don't quite know what to do with that. It might appear on a future single as a B-track or something. I trust you've now all heard Summers Edge, and are ravenous for the hard copy single, but don't fret, we'll get more information to you as soon as possible.

Alright. Just another little titbit for all you fans who can't get enough of us. We have officially completed the intro! Go us. It's a goodun as well, the best intro we've ever come up with. I think this is shaping into our best album yet. For Ampigory Abyss, we had to go into a tunnel in Berlin to record some of the echo parts for the chorus. It went well, although we were getting weird looks from passers by. The German people are quite nice though. We'll probably record here again. We recorded ANOTHER cover, this time a bit more unusual. It's Always, by Erasure. That was just for a little fun afterwards. You're probably not ever going to hear it. We're gonna get some symphonies in for the few tracks that need them as well, like Where the Sun Sets and An Arrogant Silence, which is next. I'm also breaking out the Theremin again, naturally. That'll be present on quite a few of the slower, darker tracks. Space Metal for the win! Of course, once you're in a studio, you need some inspiration to get you going. At the current moment, I'm listening to the old Marillion records. Up next in my library is some good ol' Meshuggah to get my heavy side going again.

Okay, I'm getting a bit too excited now, so this'll have to be my last post of the day. Because we love you with a burning passion, we're gonna give you a look at the lyrics of a song... which one?

How about Monolith? You should feel very privileged. These are the lyrics for one of our personal favourites off of the album.

The sheer beauty of this dagger,
It hangs around my neck, taunting me,
Comforting me with its sharp, cold steel,
Hailing me as its wielder; the one true apocalypse.

Know me as the paladin, I am the inferno,
The force which drives the embers of hell,
I am insanity in its worst form, I’m the demented sun,
Above all, I am the one true apocalypse.

A monolith stands before me,
Radiating the very ashes of my mind,
An atmosphere unique; like no other,
A fragmented shard of humanity.

It is like my aforementioned mind,
Except living, dancing in its pure form,
Cruelly distracting my soul from purpose,
Tempting me into my last day.

Yoyoyo in the crib, dawgz. It's Jason here again with yet another studio update. Basically, we've decided that we'll have to do An Arrogant Silence later, it's that fucking hard to make. We'll wait until we have the right production tools to make it. Until then, we're gonna get done with the easier, shorter tracks such as Crystal Urn and The Nights Shore. Actually, I think we should give you what we think is a basic outline of the track times. You can find that at the bottom of this post. Also, we'll be making a video for Summers Edge soon. We've got some ideas so, yeah, more on that soon.

Also....

TA DA! We has merchandise for our lovely fans.

That 'Jason Smith is God' shirt looks like the coolest thing since sliced bread. Plus, it teaches you a good lesson, y'know? Alot of the times, shirts that have factual things written on them, like those 'E=MC2' shirts, aren't something you'd want to be caught wearing. But, this shirt breaks the mould; it's truthful, and hip! I'm getting one!
