After a long stretch of touring and recording Johnny decided to pack it up with his mates for a long needed rest. They've recently dropped a single and then a new album altogether that they recorded in their absence from touring. It seems to be more emotionally charged than most of their albums which have more of a political aspect to them. They usually preach against the evils of corporations, being an individual, and throwing down. Their second album kept that feel of being true to yourself and your roots while forsaking the luster of the mainstream while converting several genres all into punk rock revelry in what was considered an album that was country folk punk but basically just couldn't be defined but staying in that punk rock vein. They then released a Sublime tribute album and disappeared for a while. I managed to catch up to Johnny while he was resting at his home off of some dirt road in West Virginia. He commented on the status and direction of the new album.

Well another reason for the long stretch and hiatus was the death of my father. I needed time to rest and recuperate from a huge loss that will be hard to get over. But this new album is called Under The Table and it tackles mostly the subject of relationships. The one's I've had with the girls in my life and the relationship with my father. We were planning to do the cover album but when my dad died everything stopped and we scrapped it altogether. Every that isn't about a girl is about my dad and well all of our dad's really. Though it's definitely a different and a bit darker direction for us to tackle death. My Old Man is specifically about my dad and I mean every word in every lyric. But I also got 18 dream out of it about a young girl who is much wiser than her age leads you to believe. She stood by me when I needed her to be there. So age really doesn't mean shit it really is a number.

You're obviously talking about Nicole Woods here right? It's still been kind of quiet on the relationship front with the two of you.

We're keeping it quiet and low key really. You may see us out from time to time. But we really just enjoy our privacy. So that's how we try to keep it really. Nice and low key. Really don't want the press peering into our lives and try to keep them away from that aspect of our lives. As musicians when we're together feel free to treat as such. But like I said we like it quiet like it is right now. If we want you to know something we'll inform you first. Keeps the gossip and nasty rumors from floating around.

The two of you have kept pretty low key on the relationship. She was at your dad's funeral from what reports are telling us.

*He nods* Oh yeah, she'd been there for me throughout the whole ordeal and I'm still grieving. She's been there for for that too, real strong girl. My family welcomed her with open arms and everyone I know just loves her. Couldn't ask for a better girl or person. That family thing is something that was instilled in me from a young age. So you want everybody to be part of that really. It's what I plan to do for the next album. It's going to be a completely solo album done my by myself though because the other guys are involved in some other projects concerning our record label and what not. I also hope to tour with Jack Frost as a supporting act either by myself or with the band. I got a nice letter in the mail recently sending his condolences. The guy's just a class act all around.

Really?! Well this is definitely breaking news. Are you going to keep the punk rock sound that you came in with or are you coming out of left field again?

Well you could say that. It's going to be part acoustic, part electric, with a little bit of everything thrown in. A more country album really. The kicker is I'm getting my dad's dad to sing some with me. It's sad that he's still here. You know nobody's supposed to bury their child. But when I told Grandad about it he just beamed. "None of that noise boy!" He shook a fist at me and made me swear we were going country, folk, and a little bluegrass "without all that damned guitar hum" that he likes to rail against. Grandad has always had real heart and soul. So the solo album will be a real tribute to my roots. It's for dad and Grandad. Something we can all be proud of.

I wanted to ask a few more questions but when I noticed the tears in Johnny's eyes. I thought that it would be best to conclude the interview here. Though the band seems to going through a rough patch it's usually times like these when they bring out their best. You can send regards and condolences through his twitter and email account on the band's website.

Stacey: Wow, your sort of like Jim Morrison re-incarnated and edited by the guys from Sesame Street. But I do like your band :)

Johnny: Although I have no idea what the fuck that's supposed to mean. I'll take it as a compliment. Just because Jim Morrison and Sesame Street were used in the same sentence. But elaborate, that sounds like me on acid for crying out loud.
