Title: “Slurred Preach”
Artist: Miami
From: Hotel Miami (2014)
Release Date: May 18, 2014
Length: 4:28
Format: CD Single, Digital Download, Weekly Airplay
Recorded: April 2014 – Half-Moon Studios, Las Vegas, Nevada
Genre: Rap, Pop
Label: Songs to Love and Die By
Writer(s): Amelle ‘Miami’ Sebert
Producer(s): Amelle Sebert, Christian Fallon

“Slurred Preach” is the fourth official single released from Pop/Rap musician ‘Miami’. It’s expected to be the final single prior to her debut album release and follows her previous single ‘F*ckin Barbie!’ which peaked at number #1 on the singles chart making it her first hit single to date, she has widely drawn mixed reception in the industry, most notably the writing staff at Culture Uncut taking a personal dislike to the upcoming musician but it appears that the tide could be turning as she begins to establish herself and put her own stamp on her music, it’s expected to continue on throughout the next few months with the release of her debut album, titled ‘Hotel Miami’. And more singles are expected to be released in the next few months in support of the album.
‘Slurred Preach’ is a song about following your own path and references religious views throughout, some early pre-release reviews of the track have seen the song draw criticism with many believing that the musician could alienate some of her fanbase with the track and it’s “anti-religious undertones”, but some early reviews have stated that the track is a positive thing, with one review stating “The song shows that she’s got a voice and she understands that she now has an outlet for that voice, it was first touched upon in ‘Family Nightmares’ which hit home to a lot of fans who have gone through similar difficulties and she’s done it once more with her latest single.”

The song features a dominant and dramatic musical backdrop emphasized by the sound of an Organ, another nod towards religion and church, it’s melodic and emotive rather than full of beats and energy and the lyrical theme matches the tone of the music extremely well. The track is released on May 18, 2014 in CD Single, Digital Download and Weekly Airplay formats, it was written entirely by Miami and was produced by Miami alongside Christian Fallon who has worked with the musician in the past. The song was recorded in April at Half-Moon Studios in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be released through Songs to Love and Die By Records.

Lyrics

“From an early age, I was taught to be free
No religious views
I was always told to be me
Don’t worry about what people think, say or do
Just believe in yourself and someday they’ll believe in you
You don’t need a bible
To tell you what’s right or wrong
You don’t need a god
To help you become strong
The only faith that you truly need
Is the faith and belief in you
Don’t listen to their preaching of what they believe to be true

So I find my faith in the bottom of a glass
I find my joy in the face of friends
I find my heart flutter at the start of a night
And I feel it ache as it ends
I find my eyes widen
At the sight of a familiar neon sign
I may be flawed
But I feel pretty fine

So you may have your churches
To confess your sins
You may have your cemetery’s
To remember those that heaven let in
Through those pearly gates
But if it seems like I don’t care
I’m alright here, thanks
Yeah, they don’t have neon signs up there

But it’s a lot more similar than you think
We sing along to the jukebox while you sing your hymns
You confess your sins in secret while ours come pouring out with a strong drink
We aren’t a million miles apart, I’d say
We’re all just trying to figure out why we’re all here today
The difference is, if you’ll give me a second
That we don’t preach at people, afford them blessings
We just let em be
Rather be happy as you are
Than pretend to be someone you’re not
For the sake of a god

It’s hardly relevant now, is it?
That we memorize these words
Words that were written so long ago
Preaching at us, sh*t that they think we should know?
Are we truly all god’s children?
Is this what you believe?
That we’re equal to killers and thieves?
And that love is only true if it’s with the opposite sex?
F*ck that sh*t, it’s tantamount to neglect

So how about we write a new bible?
That doesn’t preach hate
That focuses on supporting one another
To build each other up to be great
See, I don’t believe in god
I don’t believe in churches and hate
You can call me a non-believer
F*ck it, that’s great
But I do believe in something
I believe in love
It’s something they talk about in church
Love and faith go hand in hand
But it ain’t something they’ll ever truly understand”

Giselle: I'm going to be honest girl, I didn't know you were so lyrical. The topic you touched on was very risky but I like that about you. You push boundaries and you really just take on a strong subject so you let people know "I'm not afraid bitches and I'm going to say how I feel" hahaha. I love that. Good job girl. Keep pushing. 💚

Miami: Ahhh thanks! I dunno about pushing boundaries, I'm just looking to give my songs a narrative that connects with some people, I mean it ain't gonna connect with everybody and if it don't then that's cool with me, hopefully those that don't connect with my music can find music to relate to from somebody else, because we all need that!

OOC: You know what I like is the fact that you can write songs and not put any music to them and they still connect just as well. So Good Job.

OOC: I agree with freestyle. Its kind of unique since we all use sound a likes and you make the focus on the lyrics and that's really a standout here as all your lyrics are. Even though I'd love to hear the actual beat. Reading the description gave me a clear idea of what it sounds like and I really like it. Once again a really good song from Miami :P

Isaac Lovelock: I like the dissonance between the subject matter and the sort of gospel-like beat that's backing it. Lyrically it's top-notch, and the wordplay is good. I've liked this way more than your other singles, hope the album is more like this.
