“Anxiety” is the name of a song by American singer-songwriter musician, ‘Maddie Urie’. Set to become the fifth official solo single from the young musician after a rather stop-start career so far. With the anticipated release of her latest song, it marks a comeback from the California native who seemingly disappeared from the music industry back in 2014. Reasons for the absence from the industry are yet to be confirmed, but it’s thought that her latest song is in reference to her departure and reasons for that departure. In making her return to the music industry with this brand new song, Maddie Urie has done it quietly and has managed to keep it quiet for the past couple of months where she’s been working in a recording studio in California, working on songs that are set to be included in an upcoming E.P release and then potentially a full-length album that her fans have been waiting for quite some time now.

The song begins with a soft keyboard introduction and with the exception of a heavy drum beat mid-way through the song is the only instrumentation of this brand new track. Maddie’s soft melancholic voice works perfectly in combination with the light keyboard tones, it’s quite and emotive and highlights the strength of the lyrics. Setting the scene early on, Maddie sings, “There comes a moment when it all piles up too much/You keep everything bottled up for days, months and years and years/At least until finally it all comes crashing out/That’s the greatest of your fears.” Which potentially signal her own feels prior to her taking time out from the music industry after a successful couple of years. As we arrive at the chorus, the addition of the drums add a power and wait to the song as she sings out with a lot more power “I’ve got anxieties inside my mind/That I just can’t escape tonight/But sometimes it’s easier to hide/Than to face the fears that you feel inside.” Which again seem to directly relate to feelings and fears of not being all that she can be.

Maddie worked alongside Cara Zayn on the track as the pair penned the song together back in July and later went into a recording studio to finish up the song. It was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, California and will be released on September 10, 2016 as a CD Single, Digital Download and Weekly Airplay primarily through ‘Songs to Love and Die By’.

LYRICS;

“There comes a moment when it all piles up too much
You keep everything bottled up for days, months and years and years
At least until finally it all comes crashing out
That’s the greatest of your fears
Some girls grow up feeling like they are never enough
Some boys fear what they feel inside
These are things that we can’t always hide
You can’t always hide
The things we fear inside

Now that it’s here, I’m feeling that fear
What if I lose my voice
Stumble or fall
What if I say the wrong thing
Or worse yet
What if I say nothing at all
What if I say everything
That I’ve ever want to say to him
What if I get burnt
And he doesn’t feel the same in return

I’ve got these anxieties inside my mind
That I just can’t escape tonight
But sometimes it’s easier to hide
Than to face the fears that you feel inside
I’ve got these anxieties inside my mind
That I just can’t escape tonight
But sometimes it’s easier to hide
Than to face the fears that you feel inside

So call me a doctor or get me a shrink
Send me to rehab because I’m back on the brink
Say that I’m crazy and it’s all in my head
Tell me it’s just a bad day
Send me to bed
Call me a doctor or get me a shrink
Send me to rehab because I’m back on the brink
Say that I’m crazy and it’s all in my head
Tell me it’s just a bad day
Send me to bed

I’ve got these anxieties inside my mind
That I just can’t escape tonight
But sometimes it’s easier to hide
Than to face the fears that you feel inside
I’ve got these anxieties inside my mind
That I just can’t escape tonight
But sometimes it’s easier to hide
Than to face the fears that you feel inside"

Erica: I totally get where this song is coming from. I cannot be in the same room after I put bread into the toaster. The anxiety of worrying about when it will pop out and scare me.....*shudders*

Nina: she's being serious.

Erica: so am I.
