2. Paralysis (4:39) (Thrash Metal/ Speed Metal) (Smith/ Del Petro)

For a few seconds, you can faintly hear electronic static sounds and warped screaming mixed in very quietly. This then fades into a slight acoustic riff for, literally, a few seconds. It then descends into a speedy dual-guitar riff. The drums are pounding away at lightning speed as the bass is turned up extremely loudly, so it’s very audible through the song. This riff carries on until stuck in your head, then a huge scream erupts over it, and the drums calm down into a normal thrash metal style. The riff then speeds up even more and the lyrics are sung harsh, but not in a death growl tone. In between the verses and the chorus, a blistering arpeggio is played. This carries on until the bridge, where everything slows down and quiets down a bit, but it soon returns to an even faster form of the riff afterwards. By the last line, everything has dropped out and Jason just shrieks it at the top of his voice. Once that has been done, it goes into a crushingly low and heavy riff, one of the heaviest that Mind have done in a while. This lasts for about half a minute, and then it erupts back into tempo and a huge dual solo. This solo plays the song out.

Jason: “This is one of the most pure, metal songs we’ve done. It blends perfectly with the intro and then descends into a frantic madness. The song is about madness as well, the heat of the moment, if you will. The story behind this is a man who catches his girlfriend cheating. In a moment of madness, he slaughters his girlfriend and her lover, and then tops himself. Jolly stuff. Because this is still a conceptual album, there is a story to it. The main character is called The Paladin and is tricked into murdering this person by a mysterious entity that keeps bothering him when he tries to go to sleep. This entity is called the Solar Ghost. At first, The paladin is confused and reluctant, but he decides to do it so he can be at peace. It’ll have disastrous effects. The story is complicated. I’ll go more into it at a later stage.”

Lyrics:
Shake yourself free of this sin, my love,
Cleanse your hands of this blood,
You’re no murderer; it’s another day in the life,
Of vilified angels, blood crimson mud

Erase the pain with the flick of this knife,
A whore in your hands, bleeding black,
Sick from the lies and torment,
An evil grin spread across the banshees face

Shake yourself free of this sin, my love,
Cleanse your hands of this blood,
You’re no murderer; it’s another day in the life,
Of vilified angels, blood crimson mud

Her long hair disguises the shadowed face,
The ivory pale figure, yet burning black,
Through the embers of the unforgiving,
The drained fire of the dead

Shake yourself free of this sin, my love,
Cleanse your hands of this blood,
You’re no murderer; it’s another day in the life,
Of vilified angels, blood crimson mud

If love is such as strong word,
A song for the heart you say?
Decipher the innocence,
And fuck it with the world!

Shake yourself free of this sin, my love,
Cleanse your hands of this blood,
You’re no murderer; it’s another day in the life,
Of vilified angels, blood crimson mud

Fuck you and this world!

You guys put an insane amount of work into this, it's obvious after only two songs. I'm sure listening to the entire album at once is a mind-blowing experience. So far, this is amazing stuff.

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

3. Solar Ghost (12:32) (Experimental/ Space Rock) (Anderson/ Smith)

Quiet arpeggios introduce the song, similar to that of Devin Townsend, whilst a Theremin is heard in the forefront of the song, mapping out a spacey theme for the song to be set to. Soon after, the second guitar comes in with a fairly complicated and intricate, yet faint riff. Soon after, the lyrics come in quietly and carefully, in a hushed tone, and it is done very gently. A little while after, the lead guitars arpeggios turn louder and all the other instruments drop out. The last note of the arpeggio section marks a change in the song. Some fast, yet extremely high pitched shredding pounds in the song as the drums get faster and faster. All the build up leads into a little jazz section, except with more guitars. It is like one huge jam, similar to the Road of Joy competition. Although almost all of the instruments are left playing this jazzy section, the lead guitar descends into some alt rock riffing, similar to that of Reckoner. Some more singing erupts over it, still clean, but louder and more vicious this time. Although this riff carries on, everything gets louder and louder, and some more singing is mixed into the background, whilst Jason performs the main lyrics. Eventually, everything falls into disarray, and it all turns into a psychedelic jam towards the end. This part fades out into the main riff being played on a hurdy-gurdy and sitar. The sitar is playing it at an extremely fast rate, whilst the hurdy-gurdy plays a more relaxed version, giving it a nice effect. A spacey synthesizer also comes in here. When both the hurdy-gurdy and sitar drop out, Aaron plays a small jam of his lap steel before the song comes to a quiet end, marked by a cymbal crash.

Jason: “This one was written with my mate, JC, from Reckoner. We wrote it together whilst in a competition called Road to Joy, which got cancelled because we all fucked off eventually. There are lots of other people to thank as well for influencing this piece, uh... Jimmy from Black Gold Reign, Tim from Axiom, Kit from The Nimrods. Occasionally, even RRH [Ryan Ross Hernandez] chipped in. Not Alex P [Formerly Blood of Wecz] though. Alex P is a twat. There are loads I’d have forgotten to thank, but thank you all anyway. Musically, it combines nearly all of our genres in there. Hints of alt rock, jazz and of course prog metal are evident. One of my favourites. The song is about anything really. I just wrote the lyrics out of nowhere, and I thought they fitted quite nicely with the song. It has a good feel following from Paralysis. Whilst Paralysis was extremely fast and heavy, this one is atmospheric and lets you have a bit of a breather. Conceptually, this is where the story really begins to take a turn for the worse. The main character, The Paladin, has found that the person he had to assassinate in the last song was the keeper of time and space and shit like that. So now, every things been turned upside down and the universe is in chaos.”

Lyrics:
Circles plague the air,
A cold everywhere,
And I just can’t hold on,
And breathe I can no more.

Come see my solar ghost,
He breathes lifelike, almost,
The sounds of waves collide,
In the universe tonight.

So? Why are you waiting here?
Don’t you have better things to do?
In the depths of our universe,
Something’s gone awry.

In the universe tonight.

Demon! Of the ages we used to know,
One more chance, I beg you please,
I can’t take this shit any longer...

We’re going to get you, again.

4. Clarity through Distrust (6:17) (Heavy Metal/ Progressive Metal) (Smith/ Del Petro)

In the background of silence, a barely audible sound of whale song plays. This gets louder and soon the sounds of explosions are added into it. Although this carries on for about half a minute, it then goes straight into a slow, yet technical riff. The bass and the drums carry out a polyrhythmic timing structure. On the verses, the bass and drums are on their own, with the guitars dropping out. The vocals are clean and remain this way throughout the song. In between verses, the guitars play another little riff for a few seconds, before returning to the bass and drums again. After the second verse, it all goes silent for a few seconds. It then falls into a speed metal riff, very fast. The initially simple bass riff is very complicated, possibly the best bassline that Mind have ever come up with. In the background, you can hear what sounds like a crowd shouting. The vocals, although still clean, are now sung in a shrieked Bruce Dickinson-esque tone. On the line “Through distrust!”, an epic solo battle between Aaron and Jason occurs for a minute or so. It then goes silent again, before returning to a gentle acoustic version of the original riff. The rest of the lyrics are sung like the first part, although the guitars are also involved this time. On the very final line, Jason shrieks that note in a high pitch for about 20 seconds, before a drum solo plays the song out.

Jason: “This song has one of my favourite riffs of the whole album. It’s got a lot of NWOBHM traits actually, when you think about it. This was like the first song we made for this album, along with two other songs called The Harbinger Dance and Inferno which didn’t really make the cut. That demo was made whilst touring with Herr Fische quite a while back now, before The Aeronaut. Thinking about it, this should have been on The Aeronaut.”

Lyrics:
Take these pills to stop the pain,
And breathing, all the same,
Do what you do to find the way,
Since nothing’ll ever go away.

A road appears seemingly from the darkness,
An angels call, a demons kiss,
Ride alone through emptiness,
And we’ll still remain as powerless.

Put my distrust through the grip of a knife,
Because I want Clarity,
I want Clarity,

Built around this worthless life,
All for Clarity,
We will get clarity.

Through distrust!

Take these pills to stop the pain,
And breathing, all the same,
Do what you do to find the way,
Since nothing’ll ever go away.

A road appears seemingly from the darkness,
An angels call, a demons kiss,
Ride alone through emptiness,
And we’ll still remain as powerless...

We are all powerless.

5. Necropolis (2:57) (Groove Metal/ Melodic Death Metal) (Smith/ Del Petro)

It descends straight into the song, as a huge chaotic spree of drumming introduces the song. It then slows down into an extremely heavy riff. The riff is secured in your brain for a few secs, before it starts going into the lyrics. The lyrics are screamed in Jason Smiths trademark guttural screeches. There isn’t much differentiation in the song until a couple of minutes in, when everything stops for a brief moment... then everything comes blazing back into life with a huge thrash-y solo. A huge scream follows the song out in a blistering, light speed solo that could easily melt the skin off of an outsider. Throughout the song, the faint sound of Jason shouting “Divine!”, a chant from the single off of The Juggernaut, Divine Usurper. This is a reference to the fact that the songs have similar riffs to each other. It is the original recording of the song placed beneath the layers of vocals already in place. The song fades out into static noise, similar to that of the following song, Bludgeoned into Submission. The noise is actually The Stranger muffled, electronised and sped up. In the closing few seconds, a scream from a song from Minds debut Free Your Mind, on the title track, can be faintly heard. This is a song that could possibly become a single.

Jason: “For me, this reminds me a lot of Divine Usurper from The Juggernaut. Both extremely groovy, yet fantastically heavy. Both songs are relatively short by our standards. Lyrically, it’s about a necropolis. What more could you ask? A city of the dead. Fricken’ awesome. Despite this being in our comfort zone, it took a while to produce, due to errors that I might have accidentally made whilst producing it. We might release the outtake on a bonus disc or something.”

Lyrics:
Stand up! Stand tall! Stand for your dominion, you fool!,
Speak loud! Speak clear! Tell your tale for all to hear!,
A mechanic mind is bred by the artificial sun,
As death approaches, there’ll be only one!

Rise up! Back down! We’ve no space for cowards in this town,
Magnetic! Deranged! A fall guy is who to blame,
Synergy entwined a soul of doom,
Cold eyes of death stare on and loom!

Creeping back, creeping in,
I feel comfortable in the skin I’m in,
Fading out, back again,
We question existence and murder our kin!

Divine! Divine! Divine!

6. Bludgeoned into Submission (Her Silent Curse Part I) (5:45) (Progressive Death Metal/ Groove Metal) (Smith/ Del Petro)

The song starts off with muffled speech and heavy breathing for around about 30 seconds. What it’s saying isn’t quite clear, since electromagnetic static is making it difficult to make out. Then the sounds fade out quite quickly. We are brought back down to Earth in a tremendous fashion as a post-industrial, groovy and meaty riff in the vein of Gojira or Meshuggah pounds the listener into oblivion. To add to the heavy guitar work though, are some more unusual instruments. A hurdy-gurdy plays slowly in the back, along with a glockenspiel and very brief moments of sitars. It is extremely layered and it gives it an atmospheric, futuristic edge. After a couple of minutes with this riff being played, alongside furious drumming and harsh vocals, the song takes a bit of a turn. It stops suddenly for a short period of time, leaving the sound of war cries. A gentle acoustic guitar then comes in, playing the exact same riff from The Juggernaut. There are no vocals during this part, just the acoustic and the hurdy-gurdy playing. This blissful peace doesn’t last however, and it then goes back into the riff, with Jason playing the main riff and Aaron playing a lightning speed solo. After the solo, it fades back into static screaming and a quiet child’s voice whispering indecipherable lyrics. A gentle piano part then plays the song out.

Jason: “This song isn’t about anything in particular, ha ha! It’s sorta about the way that we humans, in all our stubbornness, will fight to the death for a lost cause. It’s one of the first songs we wrote for this album, and that’s visible. It’s one of our more recognisable ones.”

Lyrics:

Intro: “Until those who hath slandered my name,
Are meeting Death at the edge of his scythe,
They are still alive and breathing,
Still alive and breathing!”

In this pit I hath dug for my soul,
Alone I crawl into the light,
An abyssal torrent of sunshine,
Welcomes me as I glaze into the open,
The great tormentor, brings nothing but false hope,
A river filled with the blood of my brothers,
Slayed by the scum from the skies,
I vow revenge on those that I hath lost!
One with the mind, is one with the soul
One with the soul is one with heart
One with the heart is one with emotion
And emotion brings nothing but chaos
In this world of unholy pain and holy lies,
In this world of war and suffering,
The suffering is the only salvation,
Bludgeoned into submission!

The moon is my guide,
This treacherous night,
I feel so cold,
Yet blinded from light
Ad astra, bellum se ipsum allet!
Tonight we ride!
Bludgeoned into submission!

Outro: “Though we all fall down,
Their blood is my wine,
We were never victorious,
Never in this crime.”

7. Dandelions (8:04) (Progressive Rock/ Rock) (Thornton)

Unusually, Jason gives his vocals a rest here as he lets Harry perform a song that he wrote whilst wrongly convicted in prison. The song starts with a gentle, acoustic led guitar piece, with the gentle lyrics smoothly paving their way through it. Harries voice is almost blues-like as he executes this song, a deep sigh of the bold lyrics that he wrote for this song. Eventually, this acoustic part is joined by violins and the electric guitar, courtesy of Jason. The riff is still the same, but Harries vocals are starting to get harsher, almost matching Layne Staley in terms of pronunciation and key. Although Jason may not be leading in the vocals, he sometimes lends a quiet backing, especially towards the end of the song, when the song picks itself up a bit. The bass in the background is extremely simplistic, but also quite effective in the actual structure of the song itself. A gentle, eerie Theremin is weaving its way on top of the song. Jason has to always get his bloody Theremin out, doesn’t he? Twat. Anyway, the song continues at this pace, until an uplifting, yet emotional solo powers its way until the end of the song, marking an unusual song in the Mind catalogue, but one which truly makes them an experimental band. In the last few seconds of the song, a glockenspiel can be heard, playing a sped up version of The Stranger. The closest to a ballad on the whole album (excluding Love is a Twisted Form of Sadness, the bonus track.)

Jason: “I don’t know what circumstances Harry was under whilst writing this, but I understand it must’ve been hard. Heh, I said hard. It also allows me to give the rest of the band more creative input, since a lot of people think Mind is just me and Aaron. You couldn’t be further from the truth. Anyway, this is a great song. Harry did us proud on this one.”

Lyrics:
Dandelion fields of home crawl to mind,
Where the spirit of caution is safe in time,
To the beat of the sound of innocence, the loving cries of souls,
The gentle sigh of angels and a quiet breath of gods,

The very mention of the word freedom,
I’m an innocent man, I know I am,
Questioning the existence of a god,
Questioning this very existence,

Caught between two mindsets,
I give myself away,
A silent mirror speaks its words,
Yet I give myself away.

Dandelion fields of home crawl to mind,
Where the sun is risen and a constant shine,
To the beat of the sound of innocence, the loving cries of souls,
The gentle sigh of angels and a quiet breath of gods,

A wholesome pleasure lights your face,
Yet once you see it's all in vain,
You then erase the pain,
Let me crucify again!

We at Mind apologise for delayed song yesterday. We hope both these songs make up for it. We'll continue with a track a day tomorrow.
