Background/Recording

The success of Blue Nebula catapulted then-unknown Infinite into a league of popularity and recognition they initially weren't able to cope with. Instead of going on their own headlining tour like originally planned, the band instead decided to continue to play as a support band, but this time with highly popular bands (such as Saburben Sunrise and Reckoner). Instead of even thinking about a new album, the band spent most of the Blue Nebula touring period working on collaboration songs with bands as well-regarded as the Bards. The response of the collaborations finally convinced Infinite to begin work on a second album, even though new material had slowly been pouring into their live shows for quite some time. Making a conscious effort to make a more postive and mature sounding record than the often-gloomy Blue Nebula, the band went through many names for the album (Dramamine, Coccobacillus), before finally deciding on Midnight Skies. The album was finished much sooner than expected; a month compared to the year it took to complete their first album. Inspired by the releases of Mind's Shattered Fairytale and The Smashing Pumpkin's Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, Infinite decided to release the album (for free) song-by-song.

Jason: I seriously am giddy with excitement. I can't wait 'til everyone hears what a masterpiece you've created. It's been a pleasure.

OOC: Brilliant work on the page. I actually can't wait to see what you've got in store. I'm also happy someone else knows about Teagarden by Kaleidyscope!

I'm right there with you... I can't wait to hear what people have to say about this album, I'm really hoping people like it more than Blue Nebula. It's been truly amazing to work with you on this album, and I'm hoping we can do it again for future releases.

OOC: I can't take credit for the artwork, so I can say without a trace of immodesty that I love it to death. Haha, I think you and I are the only people who actually know about Teargarden. It's a shame, because it's a damn fine album. Not as good as Mellon Collie, but better than most of the stuff out there!

OOC: Yeah. Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie will always be the best, but Teargarden is a good return to form. It's a shame, because of that dip in between, people have abandoned them.

It's been amazing to work with you, too, man! I dunno if this is going to be album of the year (there are so many better albums that've been released), but I'm still incredibly proud at what we've managed to create. This wouldn't have been Midnight Skies without you and Jason, so thank you so much for being a part of it!

"I'll be looking out for this. I've heard previous material from Infinite, and I feel they are at the brick of something. I enjoyed their debut album and I feel their sophomore release will show whether they are a one-and-out band, or they are the real deal that others gotta look out for. They got label support and some good producers so from appearance it will be an improvement from the debut album. 'Mature' is a word I really like to hear from young bands because I'm an old musical soul."

Thank you, Daniel! 'Prelude to a Dream' is basically the opener, it's nothing too special... it'll get more interesting as time passes, though. I'm glad that people like you are looking forward to this album!

It's amazing to hear praise from somebody like you! As you've said, this album is going to really affect people's opinions of us, so we've really put an effort into this album that we hope will pay off. Jason Smith and Danny Allen helped enormously, and this album wouldn't be what it is without them as producers. I'm very excited to see what people think of Midnight Skies after a couple of these songs are released. Thanks for noticing us!

Prelude to a Dream
(0:51)

Writing/Recording
Although it’s the first song on the album, Prelude to a Dream was the final song recorded for the album. Infinite wanted a very simple yet unorthodox opening for the album, and Quillington came up with something that fit their needs completely. The song was written incredibly quickly (it only took about ten minutes, according to Eric) because of the fact that there’s only two lines. Despite how short it is, Quillington still regards it as one of his best songs.

The recording of the song was similarly brief, but was by no means rushed. Quillington recorded it alone, and needed nothing but a piano to do it. Prelude to a Dream only needed one take to be finished.

Sound/Lyrical Meaning
The sound of the song is very atmospheric, and sets the tone for things to come. It’s very simple, but effective, with nothing but a soft piano playing and Quillington’s voice echoing in the background. His voice seems very ghost-like, and slightly difficult to make out.

The first line of the song is a reference to the two most popular Infinite songs (Fusion Paranoia, Supernova) from Blue Nebula, and is, according to him, Quillington’s way of saying goodbye to the album. The second line is more open for interpretation, although the singer has said that he was just writing how he felt on that particular day.

Lyrics:
Paranoia resumes, like a supernova in bloom.
I can’t accept that I’m just shouting into the darkness

"It's perfect as the opener; it tells the listener that Midnight Skies is going to be very different from Blue Nebula. Prelude to a Dream is very simple compared to the other songs, because I was basically trying to capture the mood of someone falling asleep. This album has a storyline to it, and this is just the first part. As for the lyrics; they mean everything and nothing at the same time. It's only two lines, so they can be as deep or as meaningless as you want them to be."

Problems With Pluto
(3:02)

Writing/Recording

Inspired by the debate over Pluto's status as a planet, Eric Quillington decided to write a song based on people's tendancy to over-react to the simpliest of things. As time passed (in order to prevent himself from seeming like he was preaching), the song's meaning became much simplier; simply asking people to make an effort to fix their lives. The chorus (Look up to the midnight sky; see life as it should be), is part of a recurring theme in the album; finding beauty in dark places. As mentioned on the homepage, Infinite wanted to create a more positive album than Blue Nebula.

In the context of the album's storyline, this song simply details the narrator's views on the world.

Recording the song took some time when compared to Prelude to a Dream. The song was initially a guitar-driven song, and the band wanted the song to be on the more traditional-sounding second half of the album. Sensing the song had potential, Eric came up with a piano version of the guitar riff and asked for a duet between him and Greg. After several more adjustments to the song, Infinite finally decided to incorporate Problems with Pluto on the 'Dream' side of the album.

Song Description/Lyrics

The song begins with a piano intro that extends for around thirty seconds. As the piano continues, Greg and Eric's duet begins. It's a very weird duet in the fact that the voices have literally been blended together, to create a very unusual sounding single voice. The tone of the singing is very similar to Infinite's No Remorse; very menacing, with Eric and Greg's two voices as one creating an unsettling sound. When the chorus begins, their two voices seperate. Eric sings falsetto (look up to the midnight sky; see life as it should be), while Greg sings deeply and in an almost mumbled tone of voice (All the stars, all the life).

As the chorus ends, so does the piano. Replacing it are a guitar (playing the exact same riff as the piano), bass, and drums. The second verse sounds the same as the first, with the added benefit of the bass playing the same notes as Eric and Greg are singing. This effect almost makes it seem as though three people are singing, making the vocals stand out even more. After the second verse, there is much ad-libbed feedback and distortion, and it seems the song is building up to something. Suddenly, all sounds are cut, and all that can be heard is an almost peaceful-sounding glockenspiel riff played by Greg. A shorter version of the chorus is heard, and the glockenspiel is heard for several more seconds before the song completely ends.

It’s easy to pretend the Mayans were right
The universe explodes, and it’s no one’s fault
On and on, we sing this song; on and on, we scream
You say nothing in the end is your choice
Yet you’re the one holding a picket sign

(Look up to the midnight sky; see life as it should be)
All the stars, all the life
(So perfect)
Stop waiting for a miracle

It’s difficult to realize effects are our fault
The universe exploding; our choice, not a god’s
On and on, we sing this song; on and on, we scream
There’s a lot of things I’d like to rearrange

(Look up to the midnight sky; see life as it should be)
Stop wishing for a miracle

"There was thing going on a few years back, about whether Pluto should be regarded as a planet. Some of the smartest men on Earth were scratching their heads and wondering about the status of a rock a billion miles from us. The whole thing was so fucking ludicrious, which was the basis for the song. The original meaning to the song was to just tell people to stop worrying about stupid things, but it became more or less just became a song telling people to make an effort to fix their lives. If something's wrong, you can't expect others to fix it for you."

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

Thanks, man! This song was actually pretty fucking difficult to pull off, so I'm glad that people are pleased with the way it turned out!

OOC: I'm so happy that you've enjoyed this so far, because Shattered Fairytale was the main inspiration behind this. I don't think I'd have even come up with this idea if it wasn't for that album.
