GENERATION WITH JOLENE
I never did meet this woman before. I didnt know much about her, so I only had an little time to get to know her. As she gets out on an black car, she gets out with one leg out of the car with her head held up as she walks slowly with one leg in front of another. She walks into the building as she takes off her black DC shades. She was an very classic woman- with an black and white fashion jumpsuit on with an large botoe and an middle high ended mohawk on top. She carried her image well as an woman passes by and she smiles. She walks up to me as I greet her. She shakes my head and smiles with ease as she sits on the white couch and folds her legs as she puts her hands on her lap. She sits high with great posture. She was an amazing woman inside and out. As I grabbed for the tape recorder, she hands it to me and says " May we become?" I nod and she smiles.
Can you tell me why you picked Soul out of all genres to make music in?
An maid brings an cup of tea over to Jolene as she sits it softly on the table. She sips some of the tea and starts to answer the question. " Soul is something that comes from inside. Your voice, the music, your creation. I feel that how I was so influenced on how music was created; I wanted to create music that had an good vibe and touch to what you can create. Different creations that can influence on how you work. I picked soul because on how it comes from the inside and you can always express yourself more when it comes from the inside."
How did you know your calling was music?
She looks down and then looks back up and smiles. " When I felt I was in an place everytime I will go down to the jazz club with my mom; I felt as if I was on stage, doing what the singer will be doing, playing what the bands will be playing, feeling what they are feeling. It was an amazing feeling on how music like that can make you feel. I knew I had to do it. Just go back to the days where music did make you feel great. Share my love for soul and RNB music, blues and jazz."
So I'm going to ask you this, when did you fall in love with RNB music?
She looks up and then she smiles though her teeth. She sips more tea. " Love is an strong word and it tells a lot. I knew I was in love with RNB because that's all I ever wanted to talk about or be around. When you are in love with something, you can't stop talking about something you love. I found myself, just waiting in my little room back in Brooklyn, waiting on Soul Train to come on and listen to people like El Green, Betty White, Jackson 5. Love is strong to that point to music..."
You are so unique in a lot of ways, why do you think it's important to be unique?
She points to her heart. " For you to continue to grow in an very unique way. Have an different life strong, go places you never went, being unique is not an choice, it comes to you. Being unquie is being different, but it's also being special in a lot of ways. Just like wisdom, you are wisee when you need it, wisdom is being wise all the time for you to move forward and be special at the end of all your thinking and struggling."
One word for your music.
She puts on back her shades. I didnt know what she was doing. She stands up and blows an kiss, but not the hollywood kisses, she just blow kiss within her hand. I look down and an cover art of an single was on the table near the tea. I look up and smile as I grab the cover art and started to walk.
