Deep in the heart of London one of the more surprising successes of the year Stacey Walton had been recording her debut album The Sun Always Rises, it’s an album which isn’t taken took seriously as Stacey puts it “I was never interested in creating an album people listen to when there depressed, there’s a couple of serious songs on there and I’ve taken it serious, but there’s also a couple of more light hearted songs on there like I Have Better Sex On My Own and English Girls Are Easy. I wanted a more light hearted approach to the album and hopefully I’ve achieved that.”
She’s been working alongside a very star studded production team of Jason Smith of the metal band Mind, Eric Quillington of the alt rock band Infinite and Danny Allen who has worked alongside The Bards, Miss Vanity and Reckoner and she’s had a blast working with them, “It’s been outstanding, I’ve been able to spend time with three people who I really look up to and respect in the music industry, everyone knows of my infatuation of Eric Quillington and Infinite and you can’t help but fall in love with Jason, maybe when you first see him you don’t expect him to be so friendly and Danny kind of discovered me so I owe a lot to him and he’s respected as a producer, you just have to look at some of the names on his debut album, incredible group of musicians. It‘s been everything I could have wanted.”
And the praise she’s received has surprised Stacey quite a bit, “I didn’t think that so many famous and well respected musicians would like me or my music, I thought maybe because I’m new and I’m a bit different people wouldn’t have anything nice to say about me, but the love I’ve received by so many musicians has been mind blowing, I mean I’m friends with people whose music I’m obsessed with, it’s everything I could have wanted and there’s nothing I’d rather be doing, right now“.
And of course the success of A Tender Kiss, “I’ve said many times about how much that amazed me and shocked me, the single had been released for about 3 weeks and I think it was like around 34 or something in the charts but then suddenly it just starts selling huge amounts and somehow reappears on the top20 at number 2, number fucking 2. That’s still unbelievable to me, I was happy with the 34 chart position but this is mind blowing for me, although it did have it’s pressures.”
And those pressures were, “Well I generally thought that people would be like, “Ok so you’ve got a successful single but where are you gonna go with the next single, but honestly if that number 2 single is the highest I ever get in my career, I’d be delighted with that, I’ve got the follow up single coming out in two weeks called English Girls Are Easy and there will probably be pressure on that but I’m not expecting anything with it, if I can get into the Top 40 in the UK then that’s good for me, obviously I’d love to prove some people wrong and have another successful single and then I could confirm that I ain’t a one hit wonder, that’s the big worry, I’m not too bothered about having hit singles, but I don’t want to be known as the girl who wrote A Tender Kiss, I don’t want to be 40 and have people come to my show just to hear A Tender Kiss but so much is unwritten right now and it’s up to me to try to top that single, I honestly don’t think it’s my best song, but we’ll see what happens.” And now onto her personal life, and celebrity relationships, “I don’t have a problem with celebrity relationships, It’s tough to be in a relationship with a normal person because there’s always part of you that will be thinking, is he just in the relationship to be famous. I think it can go really wrong, look at Cristina and Jack. It kind of happened with Matt, but we’re still friends and it ended on good terms.”
And has she got someone special in her life right now, “Nope, I’m single now and I’ve been too busy to think about anything other than my work. I’m great fun when I’m single, I’ve been in some bizarre situations when I’m single but that’s for another day. As of right now, I’d like to be in a relationship but there’s a tour coming up so that could be a tricky thing but if something happens then it’s great, So to sum I’m single and I’m looking for something, nothing too serious though.”
And finally, what about a follow up album, “Woahh slow down, my debut album isn’t out yet man, In honesty I’d like to think that I could follow this album up in under a year, but we’ll see what happens, If I can write good enough songs then I’ll think about a quick follow up but if the new songs don’t come quickly then I’ll just take my time and live my life and then make a new album when it feels right, I’m not in any hurry, I’d like to be working The Sun Always Rises for a while, hopefully it can be a long standing record but I really don’t know what to expect. There’s definitely big pressure on my after the success of A Tender Kiss.” |
