Despite losing a member early this year, and being touring across the world for large periods of the year, The Verdict Is Vengeance’s Sam Maine has time to talk with us about the bands plans for a new album…

Hey Sam! Thanks for coming and talking, with all that’s going on for your band it’s great to finally have an interview with you, how does it feel to be in the situation you are currently in?

Sam: It’s pretty crazy, thinking about how this time last year we were barely known and only playing at the same few venues in our home town, to touring Europe, playing in Japan and headlining the Comatose stage at Animal Festival. The pressure of the commitments has been horrible at times over the past few weeks, but we have worked past it and are always looking for a chance to improve.

A few weeks ago you announced that you started writing for the new album, how much detail are you willing to go into about the new songs and how different this will be in compared to Liberation?

Sam: I’ll give away a small amount of detail I guess. We’re sticking with more of a traditional style to our music than the music we released on our latest EP (Lies Make You Famous) which was our way of experimenting. I’d say that the majority of songs are in the direction we made it seem in Liberation, but then again we like to experiment in the studio so anything is possible.

Rumour has it that Jason Smith of Mind and Eric Quillington of Infinite will both be producing the new album, is this true or just speculation?

Sam: We were talking with both Jason and Eric a few nights ago about them producing the album for us, because of how fantastic they have done with Stacey Walton’s album, we would have done pretty much anything to get the both of them to work with us. Luckily they offered and we’ll be working with them very shortly.

Do you think that having these producers instead of Alex Leiuso will affect how the record sounds in comparison with your previous releases?

Sam: Of course! That’s the reason we decided to work with some different. It’s not Alex’s fault, it’s just he is more suited towards a more popular variety of music which had its limitations on us when we began recording for Lies Make You Famous. He changed parts to sound like something we didn’t like, there was a fair bit of conflict between us and him whilst recording, even though we have been good mates for years!

Any chances of seeing other artists feature on the album?

Sam: We are going to start asking for people to give guest vocals on a few of our song. We want a large variety of vocals going across the album and will be on the search for any talent, large and small that fits into the songs we want vocals for.

Some fans have said that your voice alone isn’t enough for the band and once Kieran (Marks) left, the band started to go downhill, how do comments like this make you react?

Sam: I’m used to them, every time we’ve posted a new song onto the internet we’ve got so much positive feedback, but there has to be at least 2 out of every 10 people saying things such as “Kieran was the talented one, Sam doesn’t have the ability to sing to his standards” But I just think fuck it, he left, and haters are gunna hate because of the change. It’s not my fault. Still even without him we’re getting somewhere, and he is as well, we just aren’t working together anymore.

Are there any bands that you wish you could tour with over the next few years?

Sam: I can think of a few, I personally would love to tour with PANIC! Because I’ve always been a huge fan. Also Mind would be another band I want to tour with, they seem to have such ability and are great at what they do, hopefully next time either of these bands tour we get offered a supporting role, no way we are big enough for them to support us.

It’s about time you have a headlining tour around the UK and America, what is the likelihood of that happening anytime soon?

Sam: We want to have our own headlining tour in the first few months of 2011, which will involve us going around the UK, Europe and America in support of the album, but we don’t know if this is going to happen or not. It depends on how fans react to us over in the States when we go with Chimera in October, hopefully we’ll get a good reception.

Thanks for spending time answering these questions, we have one final question, if you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Sam: I really want to go to Australia and see some of family that I haven’t seen since I was about 6 or 7, also because I’m a animal lover and there seems to be a large amount of wildlife to keep me interested for months. One day I’ll be there and tour, and that’ll be a dream come true.

That would be awesome, give us a message and we will get back to you on a song that we think you are suited with.

I really feel this album could be something special, which is why I'm very excited to be helping produce it. I manged to watch you guys playing Animal Fest, since Infinite was there as well, and I was blown away. I'm hoping to be able to capture the energy of your live performances during recording, because it would make a fantastic record. But, we'll have to see what happens; anything's possible.
-Eric Quillington

OOC: There's nothing I can really say, aside from this; great job with this interview!
Kid Anything- Indie/Britpop/Shoegaze; influenced by Sigur Ros, XXYYXX, Kanye West, Blur, Oasis

(Bringing together an eclectic group of influences, Ulysses' songs are sung with carefree abandon by Nick Junk)

Kurt Ulysses - Songwriter, Guitarist, Backup Vocalist
Nick Junk - Vocals, Mojo

Infinite- Alternative/Experimental Rock; influenced by Muse, Radiohead, and The Beatles

(Known best for their experimental music and their frontman's eccentric behavior, the band disbanded after Eric Quillington's death to pursue solo careers or, in Matt Robert's case, peace of mind. Infinite released four albums over the course of their career; Blue Nebula, Midnight Skies, Insomnia, and Dancing about Architecture.)

Eric Quillington (Deceased) - Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar, Piano, Primary Lyricist
Matt Roberts - Bass
Greg Oldson - Drums, Backup Vocals, Secondary Lyricist
Amelia Florentine - Keyboards, Piano, Lyricist, Backup Vocals

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

You have no idea how much you helping with the production of the album means. I managed to catch your set at Animal Fest and it was just amazing, it's one of the reasons I'm so glad that you are working with us. We're willing to try almost anything when it comes to this record, within reason obiviouisly.
- Sam Maine

OCC: Thank you so much!
