It would be too obvious to call Stacey Walton a rock chick or a wild child and although this is true, it gets tiring. “It’s not an image I’ve created, I‘ve never labelled myself with that, other people label me, I‘ve not really paid too much attention to it though, I just do what I do, yeah I get drunk and I sometimes get horny, yeah I play rock music and I dress the way I want to but I‘m just a normal 18 year old north London girl, I‘m pretty normal when I‘m sober, it‘s when I‘ve had a few drinks is when I get a bit crazy but I enjoy myself and that‘s all that matters.”
But Stacey is in the public eye now and some musicians take this opportunity to become a good role model for kids, “Not me, Why is it my responsibility to be a role model, I make rock music, If your letting your 6 year old daughter listen to songs about sex and drugs then your not doing your job as a parent, It’s not my responsibility and I don’t want to be a role model, I’m not a fucking nun, I dropped out of school and learned to play guitar and sing and write songs, I did that because that’s what I wanted to do, that’s what I have a passion for, I didn’t become a musician to change the world, I became a musician because that’s the one thing I really had an interest in.”
Today Stacey has given me access to her life in London and I’ve been invited to her London apartment, It’s average to say the least, It’s just a normal London apartment, it’s clean and tidy enough, the view out of the windows aren’t very nice but she’s not a mega millionaire Rockstar yet, “I moved into this place at the beginning of the year with a couple of friends, those friends have now moved out and are living with their boyfriends so I’m living here on my own now, my friends just drop by whenever they want and it’s good but I have to admit, I’m looking forward to getting a better place to stay at, I’m not rich by any means, you’d maybe think I’d have quite a bit of money, A Tender Kiss has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide, you’d think I’d be able to afford a nice apartment looking over the river Thames but not yet, it’s not a very great place to live but it’s good enough for now, I don’t spend very much time indoors anyway so it’s not a problem.”
Her father was involved in music as well, “It’s not like he’s a Rockstar, he was a roadie for a few British bands, legendary bands I might add. Like The Who and The Rolling Stones, I was too young to know who they were. He was also a roadie more recently for Oasis and U2, we’re talking like 2001 - 2004, I knew who they were at that time, I wouldn‘t call myself a fan and I never liked Bono, I found it annoying that he‘d wear those glasses even when he was indoors.”
She’s known mostly for playing the guitar but she has another instrument that she has a passion for, “Piano, definitely. I’m not incredible with it, I learned to play piano at the age of 16, My friends parents had a piano in their hallway and every time I’d go I’d ask to play on it and eventually my friends dad gave me piano lessons and I managed to pick it up very quickly and found it easier to play than guitar, I do prefer playing the guitar but I do love playing piano. I actually played piano on a Ronny Rocken track which was a pretty good experience. I’d like to play piano more but I’d have to re-learn all of my songs again. I think I’ll stick with guitar right now.”
Her lifestyle is often seen as wild or confrontational but she’s actually a very nice girl, “Yeah I am a great person, there‘s no way around it. In all seriousness though, I’m young and I’m having fun, I think people like to be around me because I’m not really a hugely serious person, I’m always making jokes and having fun because what’s the point in being moody and dull, I don’t think I’d be as happy if I was doing some boring 9-5 job, I guess I’m so happy because I’m doing something I love and something meeting amazing people.”
And she’s had her moments of craziness most notably at the Dirty Bastard, “Yeah there’s just something about that place, It’s not like most clubs because so many musicians hang there and we all know that musicians know how to get hammered. One of the first times I went to the Dirty Bastard, I got very drunk and ended up checking into a room and fucking Matt Urie, from what I remember it was pretty good, I think it was like 3 hours of the weirdest sexual situations I’ve ever been in and then recently, I was celebrating finishing the album and I ended up having sex with Tim Dunn which again was pretty good, I think musicians are just so much better at sex than normal guys. It would make for interesting reading but it’s not the right time or place, maybe someday I’ll go into detail about what went on, we‘ll see.”
She’s only 18 and her life could make for interesting reading, would she consider writing an autobiography. “Not when I’m so young, I tend to write little things down so I can remember them if I do ever decide to write an autobiography. I definitely won’t be writing an autobiography soon, there’s nothing worse than some 16 year old writing a biography, they’ve got nothing worth saying at that age, maybe when I’m 30 I’ll start writing it but it’s not something I’m particularly focused on.”
What about more collaborations in the future, “I’m very open to it, I’ve already worked with Michelle Green, Ronny Rocken and Heavy Punisher which was fun and I’m gonna be working with Daniel which I couldn’t be more excited about and like I say I’m open to it but I’m not gonna just do it for the sake of doing it, there has to be a reason for it. I was offered the chance to feature on a song with a number of other pop stars - I won’t go into who it was - and I thought it was more like what hell would be like, needless to say I rejected that opportunity.”
Is Stacey a fan of talent shows, Around The World being the most notable, “Not massively, it’s a good chance for people to get signed and the incentive’s are there, but your not gonna discover great musicians with longevity, you’ll maybe get 4 albums out of the winner and a few hit singles but it’s not my thing, I’m not criticizing it because it’s giving people an opportunity and a chance to make that breakthrough that they so desperately needed and I’m sure there are some talented individuals on it but I don’t watch it, it seems to be doing well though.”
And I’m sure she’s been asked about a follow up album, “Yeah I’ve been asked a lot about a possible follow up which I find crazy, my debut album isn’t out until next week so any talk of a follow up is crazy to me. I’ve got idea’s sure and I’ve started thinking about what I’d like to achieve on the follow up but don’t expect it to happen within the next 6 months. I’m gonna hopefully tour as an opening act for someone in support of this album for while.”
What about a headline tour, “I don’t know, I don’t think I’m ready for that right now, I’ve had one or two special headline shows which was fun, but I don’t think I’d be able to sell out a full headlining tour, if you look at someone like Matty who is currently headlining at the O2 Arena, Now he knows I like him and he’s a good guy and all but come on, 15 years old and headlining the O2 Arena, it’s just not right in my view, but maybe I’m old fashioned, whatever happened to starting out in the clubs and the terrible gigs which make you a better live performer, but the kids good I just think it’s sort of taking on too much too soon, maybe I’m jealous on some sub conscious level.”
She very rarely sits still when talking, often walking over to the window to have a look down on the street, she now begins smoking a cigarette but makes sure I’m ok with it which was kind of her, but has she ever taken drugs, “Yeah, in high school a lot of my friends started smoking weed and obviously you don’t want to be the loser who goes, Oh no that’s bad. I think part of my problem is that I’m open to trying literally anything, I was offered something stronger in a club earlier this year I won’t say what it was but I said sure and it wasn‘t something I‘d take again, But when your young you don‘t care about what happens, you just wanna take risks and see what happens, I‘ve got so many crazy moments that have happened in my life to talk about but I’ll save them for another day.”
And does she consider herself a sex addict, “Not really, It’s not like I’ve been with hundreds of guys, I’ve had sex with 4 guys in my whole life, I had sex for the first time with my first boyfriend when I was 16 and we were together for over a year so obviously we had sex a few times, I then had another boyfriend last year and we had sex about 7 times over 2 months. Then there’s Matt who I was dating in July and we had sex quite a bit and now Tim, who I‘ve had sex with once. 4 guys is all I’ve ever been with, Oh and there was that drunken night with two girls but that’s a story for another day.”
And is she single, “I’d say yeah, I’m not in a relationship. I’m sort of fuck buddies with Tim but we’re not in a relationship.” Would you like to be in a meaningful relationship? “Are you offering, Honestly right now, maybe, I dunno. I’d like to find someone special and have a meaningful relationship but if that doesn’t happen and I stay single for a while then that’s fine too because I can have fun on my own. I’m like most girls, in that someday I’d like to settle down, but not until I was like 30 at least. We’re all looking for the one, and hopefully I’ll find him, but we’ll have to wait and see, so to answer your original question, yes I’m single and yes I’d like to be in a meaningful relationship.”
And with that we wrap up the interview, I notice on the cab ride home that there was more questions about her personal life than anything else, she seemed to cool with it though. OOC: Sorry about the length, if you managed to stay awake to read all of it, I'd love to know what you think, I think it's the longest roleplay I've done.
