STACEY WALTON

WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING FRIENDS WITH AN 18 YEAR OLD ROCK CHICK, WHY DO PEOPLE HATE POPSTARS SO MUCH, DOES THE PRAISE EVER GET BORING, DO YOU GET LONELY ON THE ROAD AND HOW DO YOU BECOME AN OVERNIGHT SUCCESS

WORDS JONATHAN WALLIS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s a freezing cold morning in Kings Cross, London and I’ve just got off the train and I’m heading out of the train station and making my way across the street to meet Stacey Walton.
As I approach the block of flats she’s living in, I see her standing at the end of her street, she looks up and sees me coming towards her, she smiles and waves as I make my way over towards her, she has a mobile phone in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

“Hey, so we gonna do this article of what?” she asks as I meet her, she offers her hand and we shake before making our way across the grass to her apartment, we head up the stairs we pass a couple of different people, all look like a similar age to Stacey, they acknowledge each other and say hi as they pass. I ask Stacey why she isn’t living in some luxurious apartment over a the river, “Because I’m happy here, when I’m living in a place like this it sort of reminds me of who I am and what I’ve managed to achieve with my life, I could have easily turned out like some of the people living in this building, I could be a teen parent, my boyfriend unemployed and not interested in working. I can’t be happier that I’ve managed to make things happen for myself and this is a reminder of what I was and what I could become, Sure someday I‘m gonna move somewhere nicer, but right now this is home.”

Has she ever think about the future, “Of course I do, I don’t obsess over what will happen in the future, I don’t wake up in the morning thinking about getting married and having kids, I’m not that kind of girl, but yeah every now and then, I’ll look out of my window and see a couple outside holding hands and it sometimes gets me down, I haven’t really been crazy in love in my life, I think Matt Urie was the closest I ever felt to being in love, Life gets you down a lot, and the way you are as a person is shaped by the way you deal with life’s setbacks, we all get lonely and angry and upset sometimes and music is my way of getting past all of that, I pick up a guitar and things start to make sense again.”

Her reputation is spoken about so much, dwelled on so much even, does it ever get old, “Nah, It’s who I am, the opinions people have of me seem to be pretty correct. I like to go out and drink with friends, I like sex, who doesn’t and I don’t like rules, if that labels me as a wild child/rock chick then so be it, like all things it has it’s pro’s and cons.”

What’s are your plans for the next couple of months? Sophie Greene, Inverness.
Touring, Touring, Touring. It’s brilliant, I love touring but the whole routine thing is a bit of a pain, it’s fun playing live but there’s no time for a personal life, I don’t get to hang out with my friends very much when I’m on the road and it’s so difficult to be in a relationship when your on the road. Overall it’s amazing but there are so many things that aren’t enjoyable about it, maybe when I start to go up in the world and have my own personal tour bus rather than sharing it I’ll maybe have more fun, but being onstage every night makes up for it.

So are you single? Dean Wells, Cambridge
Yeah I am right now, it doesn’t usually bother me but lately I’m not feeling all that great about it, I’m generally fine about being single but for some reason I’ve been feeling pretty lonely lately. I’d like to just find someone who I can have fun with, I’m not looking for some massive commitment, but I’d like to be in a pretty solid relationship, I know I don’t seem like the type but we all get lonely sometimes.

Are you attracted to anyone famous? Ben, South London
I’m not sure, there are some famous people who I’m friends with who I find attractive but I wouldn’t necessarily say anything would happen, people like, Eric Quillington and Matt Urie.
Matt Urie is someone I’ve got an amazing connection with and we never fell out of love, at least I know I didn’t, I just couldn’t be with someone who lived so far away, if I’m in a relationship I wanna be able to see them at the end of every day or every morning with Matt he just lived too far away, you never know about the future. I’m good friends with Danny Allen but I don’t find him attractive, the same goes with Matty. I’m good friends with loads of people but it doesn’t mean I wanna fuck them.

Are you interested in the kind of things other girls your age are interested in like fashion? Fearne, Glasgow
Not really, well I’m not interested in fashion, I don’t obsess over the way I look, If I feel comfortable in something then I’ll wear it but I’m not some crazy, over the top fashion icon. I just generally wear denim shorts and a vest shirt thing. I don’t know what’s hot and what’s not in the fashion world, if I’m considered hot or whatever then great. If not then I couldn’t give a fuck.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? Johnny, Email
So fucking many, believe me but I don’t want to be most known for collaborations, if there’s a song and I think it’s right then I’d look at a collaboration but I’m not gonna just work with someone just because I admire them. But if you want names then, Infinite, Mind, The Voyd, Daniel, Glamazon, Miss Vanity, GirlSpice, Axiom, Chimera, Ryan Ross Hernandez, Reckoner, Fathers Of Fury, Giftstar and so many more.

Do you ever do things for charity? Scott Daniels, Newport
Yeah I do give to charity quite a bit, the difference is, is that I keep quiet about it. I’m not fucking Bono or Geldof but I do give money to various charity’s and I’m going to visit some kids at the Children’s Royal Hospital over Christmas, like I say I don’t make a big deal about it. If I’m asked about then I’ll talk about it but I’m not gonna just talk about charity work, it’s nothing special or nothing difficult to give money to charity.

Where do you think your more famous, the UK or the US? Gavin, Email
I guess I’d say the UK. I think in the US they were more intrigued by me, but in the UK people seem to treat me like the crazy little sister who they feel they have to look after. So yeah I’d say the UK is where people are more aware of me. I do like the US and I’m already looking forward to going over there for the Warped Tour which is gonna be incredible.

You’ve set your ex boyfriends car on fire in the past and you’ve pinched your teachers bottom which led to you being expelled, what is the best “Crazy” thing you’ve done? Jacob, Cheltenham
Well I enjoyed both of those things, watching the car burn was brilliant and pinching the teachers ass was something I became know for in school and it made things easier for me because I was often asked to various similar things. I was young and I didn’t give a fuck what the ramifications were. I once set the back seat of school bus on fire, which of course caused problems for me. I was caught with weed in high school which led to another suspension and I failed in my attempt to make the school changing rooms a co-ed changing room, that would have been fun if It happened.

Is it true that your parents did drugs with the Rolling Stones? Jenny, Watford
Yeah they did, My mum and dad were hippies and my dad roadied for the Rolling Stones during the 90’s, they hung out after a show one night and did drugs, my parents wouldn’t tell me what drugs they did with the Rolling Stones so I’m guessing it was pretty out there. But that’s all I know about the story, I did meet Mick Jagger like 4 years ago but I wasn’t exactly a fan so I just said hello and walked away.

Have you begun work on a follow up to The Sun Always Rises? Joanne Newsome, Burnley
Well I don’t write specifically for one album, I just write all of the time and if I consider the song to be good enough then I’ll put it aside for the next record. I have ideas for my follow up but I only released my first album a week ago so I wouldn’t expect any new album released before the end of the year, but I do have a few songs that I’m already considering for the next album.
If your looking for new material from me then I can tell you I’m 94% sure I’m gonna release an EP some time during December.

Stacey: Thanks Daniel, I'm looking forward to Epic Fail so much, it's a shame it's been pushed back but I'm sure it's gonna be worth it.

Danie: Yeah, it really sucks. But hopefully one month isn't that long. The fans will get to hear the songs early on tour, so I don't feel so bad. I guess November and December is the two months of good music lol
