Alicia Lena was a nobody this time last year, struggling to find any work as a musician but how things have changed, she released her debut album in May this year and it has gone on to become a huge debut, selling just over 3 million copies of This Is Who I Am and releasing four singles which broke into the charts, she’s been out of the spotlight for a couple of months and is now preparing to tour in support of her debut album. Today Alicia Lena has dropped by our radio studio for a quick chat. Mark: Good Morning Alicia, it’s been a weird 24 hours for you hasn’t it? Alicia: Yeah you could say it’s been pretty eventful.
Mark: So what exactly happened, you seemed ok during your performance? Alicia: Well I wasn’t feeling all that great prior to the performance but it wasn’t anything to be worried about, it’s just something that happens every now and then, we all get ill from time to time but this wasn’t particularly bad. I was just feeling a little bit drowsy but in hindsight I probably should have pulled out of the concert. Then the next thing I remember is lying in a hospital bed thinking what the heck has just happened.
Mark: So are there any explanations yet? Alicia: Not really, it’s just one of those mysterious things I guess. They’ve run some tests and I’ll know more before the end of the week but I’m fine now, it’s so very bizarre but that’s the way it goes.
Mark: Ok so you’ll be touring after all? Alicia: Yeah, I’ll be back on 14th October for my first headlining tour and hopefully I’ll be on top form, I’ve been rehearsing really hard for this and the doctors said that it could just be down to exhaustion but hopefully everything will go well.
Mark: Yeah, there’s been a lot of support for you this year and you recently won the best breakthrough artist award at the Hall of Fame, that must have been amazing? Alicia: Yeah it really was, it was a crazy feeling and it was so humbling, I mean there’s been some amazing new artists this year and for me to even be in contention was brilliant but the fact that I won was incredible, I was so happy and so surprised.
Mark: What’s in store for you in the coming months? Alicia: Well the tour takes me into the new year so that’s pretty much it really, I’ve been working on songs for a follow up album which I’d love to be able to record in between touring but that probably won’t be out until the new year. I essentially know the full Tracklisting for the album, I’ve just gotta record it, everything for the album has been written and it’s just ready to record.
Mark: And can we expect more of the same from the new album? Alicia: I think, for me it’s important to create something new and different from the last record, the last one was probably the most pop influenced record I’ll ever make and although I enjoyed creating it and I‘m amazed at the success of it I wanna go and do something which is more about the roots of what I listen to. I think the next album will be a more meaningful record with songs which force you to think more than say, Party-Starter or New York Love Affair. I loved those songs but they’re feel good songs to dance and sing along to but I wanna create something that sparks emotion in people. From the songs I’ve finished I can tell you it’s the most personal material I’ve ever written, it’s completely me and it’s something I’m looking forward to putting out there.
Mark: So is there more pressure on this one than the debut? Alicia: Yeah, there’s some questions that need to be answered on this one and hopefully all of the questions will be answered fully. Of course it’s gonna be tough to replicate the success of my first one but I think I’ve grown as a songwriter, as a vocalist and as a performer and hopefully that will come through.
Mark: It’s bound to be a success and we wish you all the best in your speedy recovery and your next album. Alicia: Thank you. |
