PART 1 - CAREER GIRL Sat in a small corner of a hotel bar is the shining figure of one Cristina Lake. The actress come singer has had a whirlwind few months and has rarely been out of the spotlight, filming in the US and in the UK, recording a debut album and being in one of the most volatile celebrity relationship, she is now single though and is ready to reveal the intimate details of what went on in the relationship and the following break up between “Nola” as she’s affectionately known by friends and folk hero Jack Frost. It was now time to delve into the heart of Cristina Lake. As I head over to the corner of the bar where Ms. Lake is sat, very secluded, she lifts her head up and smiles as I make my way over. “Hey how’s it going? She asks, we exchange pleasantry’s and begin the interview and the topic begins with her acting career. “It’s weird, I never grew up thinking I wanna be an actress, I was told about auditions for this little film being made and I just went for it, not expecting anything to happen but within a week of the first audition I got a phone call requesting me for call-backs, there was eight people in contention for the role and I ended up getting the job which was mind blowing completely. I pretty much stumbled into acting, I mean I did a couple of school plays when I was younger but other than that I never gave it much serious thought. Once I did that first film things started to go a bit crazy, I never predicted this as a career but suddenly I was getting offers for these incredible roles and being offered more money than my parents earned in a year but I didn’t take half as much roles as I was offered, I chose things carefully and I think things worked out pretty well.”
And why step back from acting? “It was just the right time for me to do something different and try something completely unplanned, I’ve always loved music and I’ve been blessed to actually be fortunate enough to be in a position to move into music, The whole acting thing started to get a bit predictable and stale, If I took a film role, that was essentially my whole year taken up by filming so I wanted something a bit less time consuming, something where I can rely on my own schedule rather than on other people’s. With music I could be in charge of when I’d head to the studio and start working but with filming it was just too time consuming. I had been writing songs since I was 16 years old so I had a couple of songs written which I always wanted to record, one of them being A Pocket Full Of Dreams which in my opinion is the best song I’ll ever write, obviously I’m not naturally a writer and people may look at my song writing and say it’s maybe a bit naïve and too romantic, but it’s just who I am, I’m a hopeless romantic at heart.”
Her music career has been supported by many artists but does she ever get star struck? “Constantly, I like announced my debut album, the track listing and stuff and I got these comments from people, saying they were looking forward to my debut album and it was like crazy for me. I’ve met some incredible people because of the move into music and the biggest moment was when I performed onstage alongside Jakey Comatose at the O2 Arena in July at one of his gigs, I was almost in tears after the performance I was so amazed that I had sang alongside such an icon.”
How did you come about signing to Junction Records? “Well there’s a film connection at that label, Jake Wilson is a A&R man there and he had worked with me a couple of times, I guess he managed to persuade Max to sign me and also I had worked alongside his fiancée Juliette in a film in 2009 and I guess both those things helped, but I still had to audition for Max. I sang the Bob Dylan song Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right and No One Knows I’m Gone by Tom Waits, I guess I did alright because Max called me like 45 minutes later and offered me a record deal. I owe a crazy amount to Max, Juliette and Jake for helping me out and in my view Max is up there already as one of the great modern songwriters, he’ll live on for sure, as will Lucy who was the sweetest woman I’ve ever met and good god she’s a wizard with a guitar.”
Where were you when you heard that Max and Lucy had died? “I was in London, we had four days left of filming, it was freezing cold and so miserable and it was pretty early in the morning, I was sitting on a bench and two kids walked past talking and one of them said to the other, “did you hear about those 4th Street Band members” and the other one said “Yeah it was terrible.”, I was like taken aback and before I could get the chance to ask what they were talking about they had gone. I quickly called Jack (Frost) and asked what they could have been talking about and he said what had happened, I did react initially, I just hung up and sat in silence for about half and hour, one of my co-stars asked me what was up and I just broke down. They looked after me and made sure I was alright but it was hard to take, I called up Katie (Armstrong - Max’s sister) who I’m pretty good friends with and told her I was coming back to the US but she told me to stay over in the UK and finish filming and said Max wouldn’t have wanted that amount of media attention, I decided to stay but I really wanted to go, he’ll never be forgotten I can guarantee that.”PART 2 COMING NEXT WEEKEdited by user 17 October 2010 07:10:52(UTC)
