Matt Roberts, the bassist of Infinite, is the least-vocal of the band. While Eric Quillington and Greg Oldson (and their often-troubled relationship) have always had a strong spotlight from the media, Roberts has always been the anonymous one. While he rarely does interviews, he's the most open and blunt out of the three members of Infinite. Sitting down for a short interview with him, I learned a few interesting facts about the self-referring 'asshole'.

Critics widely pan you as being the ‘useless’ member of Infinite. How does it feel to be so underappreciated?

"I’ve never considered myself to be underappreciated, honestly. You see, this is the thing with critics; they only look at things at face-value. Eric has such a huge and noticeable presence in all our songs, and the sound of a bass-guitar is much more subtle. As a result, the so called ‘music-analyzers’ focus on the obvious things, and not what goes on behind-the-scenes. Singers and guitarists get praise all the time, and Eric’s both of those things. He’s such a talented and over-the-top frontman that he naturally absorbs all the attention, which can leave Greg and I in the dark at points. It’s never bothered me, though; that’s just the way Eric is. And, regardless, I’ll end up making more money being the ‘useless’ member than critics will for calling me that."

Does it ever annoy you to be overshadowed by the likes of Eric Quillington?

"Nah, not really. The only thing that really bugs me is that he needs no introduction; whereas I’m always introduced as “The bassist from Infinite”. Still, I’m not complaining. The paparazzi never hound me, unlike with Eric, which basically allows me to live my life in peace."

What would you say your role in Infinite is?

The person who just keeps shit together. It’s been stated in the media so many times that Eric and Greg are kind of like the Gallagher Brothers. They’re both unbelievably talented, but every other day results in a huge argument between the two. Eric’s always been one to pull childish pranks, and poor old Greg usually is the victim. Out of all the countless times the two have sworn to break up the band, I always end up being the one to bring them back together. It’s a tireless and non-glamorous ‘job’, but the paychecks I’ve gotten from album royalties make it all worthwhile.

It sounds like Infinite is a band on the verge of break-up.

"No, not at all. We’re a very dysfunctional family, but the tension between us churns out very good songs. We’re not some happy-go-lucky band with great relationships like U2, and our music is a strong indication of it. It’s not like Greg and Eric fight every day, either; some days they get along smashingly, some days end with them at each other’s throats. The relationship they have is very dynamic and unpredictable, which is obvious considering their personalities. They often argue, but the two write amazing tunes. Their talent makes up for me; my musical talent amounts to damn near nothing. I know it’ll sound like I’m boasting, and that I’m very biased, but I truly believe Eric and Greg have the best song-writing partnership since Lennon/McCartney."

What do you think will happen during the @Chaos Awards?

"Ready for me to say something that’ll give me the ill-will of the press?! Okay, here goes; Infinite will win every single bloody award. Except for Sexiest Male, because Eric said he’d end up giving the award to Jason if he wins it. I’ll be going with Somerset Bissell as a date, but not really expecting much to happen between us. She seems like a pretty, gifted and intelligent woman, and I’m just a dick."

Got any plans for the future?

"In regards to Infinite? Hell fucking yeah, man, and our fans will be stoked about these three records. We’ve got an EP called Inferno coming out in December, and more information about that will be available soon. And then we’ve got that third album that Eric keeps calling the ‘final’ Infinite album. Still in the very early stages of that, as Midnight Skies has only just been released, but I’m very excited with how it’ll turn out. On final thing, and Eric’ll be pissed about me saying this, but I’m tired of not making any big announcements; he’s begun work on a solo album. Not sure when it’ll be released, or what it’ll even sound like, because Eric hasn’t told me much about it. He probably just doesn’t want me spoiling the surprise for anybody. Whoops."

OOC: Just a short little RP, I'm trying to flesh out his personality a little more. Comments would be greatly appreciated, because it'd be nice to see if I've made him into an interesting character.

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

Joe: How I envy you being in such an incredible band. I'm a bass player too, it's tough working with huge egos *nods over to Stacey*
Stacey: Fuck you Joe. I've always liked you Matt, your very normal.

Hey man, I don't think you are underrated or useless in Infinite, bassists are just as important as any other member of a band. I'm currently in Ibiza for my going-around-the-world vacation and trust me, most people in Europe love you more than Eric. So from now on, I suggest you put a smile on your face and maybe people will even like you more!
