Artist: Miami
Album: “Hotel Miami”
Genre: Pop, Rap, Hip-Hop, Electro-Pop
Label: Songs to Love and Die By
Length: 52:22
Released: June 7, 2014
Recorded: October 2013 – May 2014, Half-Moon Studios, Las Vegas, Nevada
Lyrics: Amelle ‘Miami’ Sebert
Production: Miami, Christian Fallon

“Hotel Miami” is the title of the debut album from American rapper/pop musician Amelle Sebert a.k.a ‘Miami’. The musician broke into the music industry towards the end of 2013 after signing for Alternative label ‘Songs to Love and Die By’, she released her debut single ‘Blazin’ My Own Trail’ which received a mixed and underwhelming reception with critics pointing out that the track was bland and boring at best. However when she returned with follow-up single ‘Family Nightmares’ things started turning in a positive direction, the musician crafted a song with meaning, it’s raw and aggressive lyrics showed a much more interesting side to the musician and many saw this as the turning point, where she went from a nobody to a rough diamond, the track painted a picture of the musicians youth and it appeared clear that putting more of herself and her own experiences into her music was what she needed to do. She recently released ‘F*ckin Barbie’ which became an unexpected hit, peaking at number #1 on the singles chart, the track is seen as a shot at the prototypical air-head pop singer although some have noted that there could be undertones of self-deprecation in the song, with some pointing out that she could even be taking shots at herself in the song.
By this point in time, Miami appears to be slowly starting to carve a name for herself in the music industry, receiving praise from some contemporaries and gaining a larger fanbase at an increasing rate, she recently decided to take some advantage of a rare moment of shine by following up her number #1 single with another track from the album. The track titled ‘Slurred Preach’ is a song which encourages a new movement based around love rather than following traditional religion, a somewhat bold move as she takes a couple of shots at religion in the song. And the final piece of the puzzle is complete as she gears up to release her debut album.

The album was recorded at Half-Moon Studios in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be released through ‘Songs to Love and Die By’ on 7 June, 2014.

1 - “Intro”

“This one’s dedicated to all the f*ck up’s just tryin’ to make it through
It’s my open letter sayin’ I’mma be there for you
Just to let ya know that you ain’t alone
When the road gets rough
Let this record guide you home
When the world is f*cking with you all along
Just put your headphones in an drift away with a song
Let these words pick you up
Sing em f*ckin’ loud
And know that you ain’t alone
You’re just standing out in the crowd
Because you’re a f*ckin’ snowflake, yeah
You are unique
You’re built strong
The judgers are the weak
And you got a pathway set for only you
You’ll stand tall, walk it proud
And make it through
So if you’ve gone through the struggle
Trailer park trash
Foster kid
Broken home
F*ckin’ car crash
Know that I’m one too
Look at me
I f*ckin’ made it through
Don’t see why you can’t, boo”

2 - “Blazin’ My Own Trail”

UserPostedImage

“Blazin’ My Own Trail” is a song from American recording artist ‘Miami’, it marks her first ever release as a professional musician having signed a record deal with ‘Songs to Love and Die By’ towards the end of August 2013. Yet to gain any real sort of media interest, it’s potentially a risky move to release her debut single so soon, but it’s a move that has been back by her record label, with the musician reportedly eager to get into a recording studio as soon as possible after signing the recording contract, she was flown out to Las Vegas, Nevada where she recorded the song at ‘Half-Moon Studios’, a recording base owned by Amy Meyer, and the musician stayed at a hotel in the process. The track, which had already been written in the months prior, was recorded within four days from August 29. The final mix of the song was completed a couple of days later and preparation began on planning the release of the debut single, it was then sent to the label for approval and then subsequently sent to ‘Miami’ for final approval which was confirmed.

The song begins with a piano introduction, it feels quite sombre at first but quickly builds to something a little more dramatic, the opening vocal from ‘Miami’ arrives at about twelve seconds into the song as she sets a marker for her own style of writing, showing a confidence and belief in herself as the first lyrics arrive, “I play the game my own way/I don’t do it like they taught me to/I be blazin’ my own trail/I ain’t been through half the sh*t you been through” and assertiveness comes across in her voice which could perhaps easily be interpreted as an arrogance, “Cos’ when it comes to me/I take care of myself” and then comes a bold statement, surprising perhaps considering it’s her debut, “Someday I’ma be runnin’ this town” she says, continuing to deliver her statements of intent all the while supported by a piano and now a guitar riff which can be heard in the faded background of the song.
The backing music rises a little further and Miami’s vocals follow suit as the song hits it’s repetitive chorus, “Blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say.” Again it shows a (some may say misguided) self-belief in her own ability, but this is coming from somebody that has worked almost constantly since the age of seventeen in order to fulfil her ambitions, it may have taken a while for a record deal to come and for her career to begin, but she’s shown already that she’s a strong minded person with self-belief and a vision for her own career, already stating her ambitions in her debut single. The song comes towards the end but hits the audience once more with that repetitive chorus and as the song ends, you already get that feeling that this could go either way, she could become one of those acts that are either loved or hated, guess you have to make your own minds up on that one though!

LYRICS

“I play the game my own way
I don’t do it like they taught me to
I be blazin’ my own trail
I ain’t been through half the sh*t you been through
Cos’ when it comes to me
I take care of myself
Someday I’ma be runnin’ this town
Ain’t nobody gonna put me on the shelf
Yeah, I be blazin’ my own trail
I don’t listen to a word that the haters say
I’ma make the most of this life
Cos’ I play this game in my own way

I don’t feel bad for all that you’ve gone through
Life is what you make of it, it’s up to you
Yeah, hidin’ in the shadows ain’t gonna get you nowhere
So when I’m at the top, will I see you there?
Hell no, you ain’t got what it takes
You don’t have the drive
You belong with all them fakes
You can scrub the floors that I walk along
Make them sparklin’ clean
Fit enough for the motherf*ckin’ queen

Blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
I be blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
Blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
I be blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
Blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say

I play the game my own way
I don’t do it like they taught me to
I be blazin’ my own trail
I ain’t been through half the sh*t you been through

You spent all these years on the side-lines
Followin’ all these guidelines
While I was out there living life
Now they be struggling to make their money
Whatchu cryin’ bout honey
Yeah, I’m rollin’ in it
I’m living the life
I’m like a firework with a destination
Ain’t ever gonna stop
Until I’m sitting pretty at the top

Blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
I be blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
Blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
I be blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
Blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say

I play the game my own way
I don’t do it like they taught me to
I be blazin’ my own trail
I ain’t been through half the sh*t you been through

Blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
I be blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
Blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
I be blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say
Blazin’ my own trail, don’t give a f*ck what people say”

3 - “Hollywood Queen”

“I took one step off the plane at LAX
Arrived in the city where they say dreams come true
My manager is calling
He’s saying “the billboards are waiting for you”
Yeah, they got their expectations
Of what they want me to be
But this version of Hollywood ain’t the one for me
Nah, this ain’t for me

I got my feet on the ground, head in the clouds
Dreaming of playing to sold out crowds
My name up there, in neon lights
Shining like a star so bright
People screaming out my name
Working hard to achieve some fame
Hollywood here I come
I’ll take em’ like a loaded gun
But Hollywood don’t look the same to me
It’s a motherf*ckin’ disaster
But I’m the guarantee

They see me for the first time
Inside they thinking it all came so easily
But they dunno the half of it
There were times when it was painful just to be me
But today their words don’t mean sh*t to me
Yeah, I’mma set me free
I’mma be all that I set out to be
I know they look at me
They be thinking I just arrived outta nowhere
Straight onto the scene
I been through the struggle
From trailer park to Hollywood queen

At three years old, my parents were gone
No one to guide me, teach me how to be strong
Had to learn how to fend for myself
I ain’t ever known love, fame or wealth
Just hard work, dedication
When I arrive, I’mma run this f*cking nation
But for now, I’m just putting myself back together
Fixing the problems of a childhood lost
F*ck how much I miss em’, I suppose I paid the cost
But no one ever loved me like they did
I was their f*cking kid
And if they were up there, looking down
I don’t think they’d be proud
Nah, not of who I’ve been
But things are gonna change
I’mma prove myself
Now that I’ve fought my way into the scene
From trailer park to Hollywood queen”

4 - “A Statement Of My Intent”

“I used to think you were my very own saviour
A knight in shining armour
Then along came f*cking karma
Just like you, it stabbed me in the back
Picked apart the pieces of me
Pointing out the things that I lack
But the way that you did it was what was so f*cked up
You tore me down just to pick me up
Playing games with my mind
I was wrong to think you were the loving kind
You just wanted to see me fall behind
And lose everything that I’ve ever loved

Friends went away
Because I took your side
Youth wasted
Because I’d rather hide
Thinking that I’m worthless
Without you by my side
Thinking that I needed you
Get me off this f*cked up rollercoaster ride
And now that I’m on my way
People still got sh*t to say

You tore my soul to pieces
Kept em’ for yourself
Held them out in front of me
Like a trophy on your shelf
Yeah you played with my feelings
Twisting and turning my tangled up heart
Stood back into the darkness
And watched me fall apart
Yeah, you nearly f*cking killed me
But that sh*t is just who I used to be
Because now you see me rising
I ain’t gonna vent
I just need you to know
That this is a statement of intent
So you may be gone
But the hate will carry on
But I don’t give a sh*t
Cos’ I’ve been growing strong

I may not be the prom queen
I may not be part of the social scene
I may not fit into the f*cked up little cliques
I may not know all of the inside tricks
But I’m on a pathway
Rising high
Shooting like a firework in the night sky
And now that I’m on my way
People still got sh*t to say

I guess for a while they all thought that I was pretty f*cked
They be talkin’ sh*t about how I had it all
Firing out clichés like when you’re at the top it’s a long way to fall
But I just think f*ck em’
Let em’ say what they wanna say
I know I ain’t gonna go changing anyway
They can play the games that they wanna play
But I ain’t gonna be playin’ along
F*ck no! I’mma be strong
I’mma change the world with my song
I’m right where I belong

I may not be the prom queen
I may not be part of the social scene
I may not fit into the f*cked up little cliques
I may not know all of the inside tricks
But I’m on a pathway
Rising high
Shooting like a firework in the night sky
And now that I’m on my way
People still got sh*t to say”

5 - “Blood Rush”

“I guess I got a blood rush, runnin’ through my head
Takes just one look, no words need to be said
I know how to work you baby
Get just what I need
I know you can’t resist my touch
But, I’mma make you beg and plead
Beg and plead, beg and plead
Beg and plead
Drop to your knees

Dominatrix in the bedroom, swagger in the streets
Calm when I need to be, I’m wild underneath the sheets
Rock that body back and forth
Give me what you got
Don’t go easy, babe just please me
I’mma need ya to hit that spot

Hit that spot, hit that spot
I’mma need ya to hit that spot
Hit that spot, hit that spot
Give me everything you got

Trace my fingers around your body
You know nothin’ can’t stop me
I wanna feel that touch
Feel that touch, feel that touch
Familiar blood rush
Feel that touch, feel that touch
Feel that touch
Familiar blood rush

Feel your soul connect with me
Got me screaming out in ecstasy
This is what you do to me
When you give me what I need
Got me moving, grinding and grooving
You got me moving, grinding and grooving
Feel me shudder, feel me shake
Like a f*cking whirlwind
Like a motherf*ckin earthquake

Dominatrix in the bedroom, swagger in the streets
Calm when I need to be, I’m wild underneath the sheets
Rock that body back and forth
Give me what you got
Don’t go easy, babe just please me
I’mma need ya to hit that spot

Hit that spot, hit that spot
I’mma need ya to hit that spot
Hit that spot, hit that spot
Give me everything you got

Trace my fingers around your body
You know nothin’ can’t stop me
I wanna feel that touch
Feel that touch, feel that touch
Familiar blood rush
Feel that touch, feel that touch
Feel that touch
Familiar blood rush”

6 - “Down In The Valley”

“I’m walkin’ proud on the strip tonight
Cos’ they don’t know my story
I just put my past in the past, look to the here and now
Searchin’ for money, fame, fortune, glory

Born and raised in a trailer park
Yeah, they still work the corners in the dark
Giving head just to make ends meet
I guess those girls still gotta eat
They don’t have dreams to aspire to
Telling lies just to get em’ through
We knew Miami before she left us here
F*ck em’ all, this b*tch don’t live in fear
Yeah, I crawled the f*ck out
They call it ambition
Leavin’ my past behind
This is my mission

Yeah, now I’m down in the valley
California kingdom
Bright lights shining on me
No lookin’ back
They be selling stories about me
But it don’t mean a thing
Because I’m here living it like a motherf*cking king

They heard I signed a record deal
That’s when this sh*t got real
Claws out, secrets and lies
But this kitty got claws and she’s going for the f*ckin eyes
And they can try to bring me down
Burn my dreams to the ground
But I’m a f*cking fighter
I’ll always shine brighter
And they can rot
Think of everything that they ain’t got
And I’ll just keep rising like a tide
They’ll see me become nationwide
Maybe I’ll throw em’ a bone
Watch em’ fight for the scraps from afar
Maybe they’ll realize that I ain’t one of em’ anymore
Maybe they’ll realize I’m a f*cking star

So they can talk that talk
Try to take these things away from me
Yeah, I know what I’ve done
But I also know what I’ve become
And I’ll be more than those vultures back home
Maybe I’ll throw em’ a bone
But I’ve got a question
And I want ya’ll to listen to this
Can you get a gig on the sunset strip?
Yeah, can you get a gig on the sunset strip?
Can you get a gig on the sunset strip?
Yeah, can you get a gig on the sunset strip?”

7 - “Pawn (feat. Andrea)”

Purple = Miami
Red = Andrea
Black = Together

“Maybe I’m just askin’ what I need to do to make it
I’m just lookin’ to strike it rich
I don’t give a sh*t about artistic integrity
I’mma do what it takes, even if I have to walk all over a b*tch
Yeah, I’ll play these games if it means I’ll be sitting pretty at the top
Whatever it takes just to see my album drop
Gimme billboards and cover spreads
Paparazzi want the money shot, I’ll open my legs
If it means more sales then I’ll do that sh*t
Money, fame, fortune
I’ll be a motherf*ckin puppet, b*tch!

I’ll do anythin’ for money, fortune, fame
I’ll be just another pawn
In this celebrity game
Just like a puppet
They can control me how they please
If it makes me money
I’ll get down on my knees

Grinding hard on down, knowin’ they’re recording this
They’ll be talkin’ bout me in the morning, I don’t really give a sh*t
See my album rising up iTunes fast
They can check my sex tape, I’ll just take the cash
Got my house up in the hill
Cost over a mill
Living like a boss
Don’t give a sh*t bout’ the cost
They’ll have somethin’ up their sleeve
Before you know it
You’ll be reading more sh*t about me
Stories sell records
Talent ain’t worth sh*t in this place
Check me going down with a smile upon my face

I’ll do anythin’ for money, fortune, fame
I’ll be just another pawn
In this celebrity game
Just like a puppet
They can control me how they please
If it makes me money
I’ll get down on my knees

Haters gon’ hate
That’s what they say
But I never worried much
About that anyway
I’m all bout’ the money
Face on the screen
I’m all bout’ the money
Run this f*ckin’ scene

Do you wanna see all of me, I ain’t sacred anyway
I’ll be down on my knees, every single day
But I know when I’m down there
I’m making that cash
Yeah, I know when I’m down there
I’m looking pretty flash
So leak the stories
Leak the shots
Leak the sex tapes
Leak all you got
Milk every second
Watch my record soar
Here I am
Record industry whore

I’ll do anythin’ for money, fortune, fame
I’ll be just another pawn
In this celebrity game
Just like a puppet
They can control me how they please
If it makes me money
I’ll get down on my knees”

8 - “Interlude: Hotel Miami”

“This is it, we’re here
Hotel Miami
Where you do what you want
Without fear of judgement or hate
Straight down the 305
Take a left at the interstate
Summer’s arrived just in time yo
This is the place where you gotta go
Find yourself
Let yourself be free
No tomorrow
And our past is history
Just live for the moment
Live right now
Live for the moment
You’ll learn how

Imagine if you could capture a moment
Imagine if you could capture this
Keep it in your heart
Imagine if you could bottle this sh*t
Relive our highlights over
Throw away the bad
Keep the good in our hearts
Memories of the best times we ever had
Pour a drink
Take a shot
Dance all night
Show em’ what you got
Feel the sun
On your skin
Summer fun
Over and over again

Welcome to Hotel Miami
I hope you enjoy your stay
Welcome to Hotel Miami
Maybe we should all live this way”

9 - “F*ckin’ Barbie”

UserPostedImage

Quote:
‘The third single from Amelle Sebert, a.k.a ‘Miami’ is another in the slow-build towards her debut album. She’s not taken the industry by storm or really ignited it enough in a way to make her considered a stand-out or even a rising star. From what we know and what we’ve heard, she’s just there I guess, putting out a song every now and then and “working” on her debut album. In the past 6 months or more, we’ve seen a re-generation of the rap genre, we’ve seen it flux and flow between embarrassing feuds and absolute genius art. People like Lotus, Isaac Lovelock, Chloe and Liyah have quickly risen to the top of the pile while those just slightly below them are doing a good job in attempting to de-throne whomever you believe is at the very top of the perch. Then there’s those that are further below, due to various reasons an act like ‘Miami’ isn’t in the game, not even on the radar of these kings and queens of the genre, partly due to inactivity perhaps but more so just down to a lack of cutting edge, while others have unleashed a wave of singles and guest spots, Miami has rarely been heard or seen of. It’s not to say that her music isn’t good, it’s just not close to the standard and the bar is constantly being raised … however, you get the feeling that it doesn’t particularly matter to her where she’s standing in the metaphorical power rankings of the genre. But that is part of the problem, she doesn’t appear to care to get involved.

She releases her latest single, the words come thick and fast amidst a strong piano backdrop, adding melody to an otherwise flat song with not particularly ground-breaking lyrics. A heavy dance beat during the final verse plays over the repeated phrase “We don’t need you, f*ckin Barbie” makes it a bizarre way to end what started off as quite a melodic song. The theme of the song comes into question too, on first listen you’d be forgiven in assuming it’s a ‘diss track’ aimed at a number of popstars currently in the music industry, but there’s no reason not to think that this is actually about Miami herself.’

“So, this is the generation that we gotta follow?
Plasticine bimbo with a brain so hollow
Air-head Barbie with an entourage so vast
You got fifteen minutes of fame b*tch, make this sh*t last
Cos’ you ain’t got the skills
To keep you in the game
You ain’t got the thrills
To really bring you fame
You got your group of writers
Supplying you with songs
But you ain’t got sh*t
When the next product comes along

So what about the fight?
Yeah, what about the struggle?
Ever spend the night with all your family huddled?
Tryin’ to do anything to keep your bodies warm
Anything to keep their kids safe from harm
Can’t play outside
Cos the neighbourhood is wild
I’m only looking out for you my darling child
So do you know what it takes to battle through the day?
Go through all kinds of sh*t
Just to find your way
Daddy bought you everything
You could possibly desire
But if I were him
I’d have bought you matches
Just to watch you set yourself on fire

You think you’re a role model
Kids look up to you?
But this is it
I ain’t talking sh*t
There’s something I need to say to you
You got fifteen minutes, b*tch and yeah you better run
Because your time is ticking down
Fame is holding the trigger
Gonna make things right
Gonna paint this town
With your f*ckin’ blood tonight

Sing with me!
Sing with me now!

We don’t need you, f*ckin Barbie
We don’t need you, f*ckin Barbie
We don’t need you, f*ckin Barbie
We don’t need you, f*ckin Barbie
We don’t need you, f*ckin Barbie
We don’t need you, f*ckin Barbie
We don’t need you, f*ckin Barbie
We don’t need you, f*ckin Barbie”

10 - “The Magnitude Of Love”

[Intro - Spoken]
“Suddenly it hit me
A moment of complete clarity
A moment of realisation
What I thought was a friendship was so much more
It was deeper than that
The glances and smiles from across the table all meant something different now
But what can you do?
When you know there’s something there
But realise you’re too late
Because everything has already fallen into place and they’ve got somebody
And you listen to their plans for the future
Knowing that in their heart they’re yearning for you
And knowing that in your heart
You’re yearning for them too
What would you do?
Yeah, what would you do?

[Verse]
Cut the ties and walk away now
Swallow your feelings like only you know how
Yeah, back in the shadows where you belong
Lying alone all night to the words of a love song
Swallow them feelings or just walk away
What’s the word in your heart?
What would you say?
You play the scene in your mind every god damn day
In your mind it’s happy endings but life don’t always go that way
You got too much to lose is what you keep telling yourself
But you just think f*ck it, I’mma be brave
Tired of gathering dust on the shelf
Yeah, pluck up the courage
Find the pride
Step outta the shadows
No reason to hide

[Pre-Chorus]
Imagine that today was your last
Would you let go of your past
Would you be brave enough to say
Or would you walk away
Just a moment of pain
For a lifetime of joy
A moment of pain
For a lifetime of joy

[Interlude - Spoken]
And you know that it’s love
You keep saying it’s just affection
But the more you deny it
You find you’re both swaying in the wrong direction
And you know that together
Everything is better
And time apart
Will just break each other’s heart
So we should just let it out

[Pre-Chorus]
Imagine that today was your last
Would you let go of your past
Would you be brave enough to say
Or would you walk away
Just a moment of pain
For a lifetime of joy
A moment of pain
For a lifetime of joy

[Chorus]
I’m feeling trapped in the magnitude of love
I’m praying to the angels to take me to the heavens above
Because I don’t wanna feel empty
There’s too much to lose
If you ask me what I wanted
I know what I’d choose

I’m feeling trapped in the magnitude of love
I’m praying to the angels to take me to the heavens above
Because I don’t wanna feel empty
There’s too much to lose
If you ask me what I wanted
I know what I’d choose

[Verse]
The drinks they start to flow and them feelings are coming out
I’m doing all I can to hold em’ in but I’m ready to shout
From the motherf*ckin’ rooftops and I don’t give a f*ck who’s gone hear me
I’ll take all of the hate as long as you’re the one near me
I see you smiling, kissing her intensely
And she’s my friend too, I love her immensely
But the way I feel bout’ you
It just don’t compare
I can’t see myself being okay
If you ain’t there

Imagine that today was your last
Would you let go of your past
Would you be brave enough to say
Or would you walk away
Just a moment of pain
For a lifetime of joy
A moment of pain
For a lifetime of joy

I’m feeling trapped in the magnitude of love
I’m praying to the angels to take me to the heavens above
Because I don’t wanna feel empty
There’s too much to lose
If you ask me what I wanted
I know what I’d choose

[Outro - Spoken]
I can’t help but feel like there’s no hope for us
I know there’s something there
I can feel it when you stare
And I know we connect like she never could
But you’re building a life with her
And yeah, that’s good
I just can’t be there to watch you live happily ever after
And feelings screw things up
I’ve learnt it now
I’mma be a closed book
It’s the only way how”

11 - “Bottom Of A Bottle”

“We all have that one place that makes us glow
Neon lights shining down on us below
They say the drink is just a quick-fix to your problems
But f*ck it, this sh*t seems to solve em’
And sure we wake the next morning with a pain running through our head
The vaguest memories of what we may have said
A body lying next to you that you ain’t ever seen before
Ya grab your underwear, your car keys and head straight outta that door
But despite the negativity that the alcohol brings us
We get back on it again
Because this sh*t unites us

You find yourself staring at the bottom of a bottle
They say drinking ain’t the answer
It may screw things up a little
But f*ck it, I’m a chancer
And I’ll take the risk for a night of possibility
F*ck it, it numbs the pain
Pour it and I’ll drink it all again

We sit around a table and put the world to rights, talkin’ religion and politics
Throw insults like stones and sticks
But the words they don’t hurt, they don’t sting and they don’t scar
Because we’re just having fun, being who we are
Without the pressure of fitting in
Whiskey shots draw confidence
Honesty comes from gin
And they pour and they pour and they pour
While we drink and we drink and we drink
And the hands of time seem to speed as the night wears on
But we ain’t going nowhere
This is where we belong

The clock strikes midnight
Let’s raise a toast for those that are alone
Line up the shot glasses
We’ll down em’ for those from a broken home
Put a quarter in the jukebox
And we’ll dance for the quiet ones
Keep the drinks flowing
This is why we belong

You find yourself staring at the bottom of a bottle
Tonight, drinking is the only option
It may f*ck up my clarity
But it’s been clouded for so long now that I can barely see
So I’ll just take the risk for a night of possibility
It numbs the pain
Just pour it
And I’ll drink it all again”

12 - “Slurred Preach”

UserPostedImage

“Slurred Preach” is the fourth official single released from Pop/Rap musician ‘Miami’. It’s expected to be the final single prior to her debut album release and follows her previous single ‘F*ckin Barbie!’ which peaked at number #1 on the singles chart making it her first hit single to date, she has widely drawn mixed reception in the industry, most notably the writing staff at Culture Uncut taking a personal dislike to the upcoming musician but it appears that the tide could be turning as she begins to establish herself and put her own stamp on her music, it’s expected to continue on throughout the next few months with the release of her debut album, titled ‘Hotel Miami’. And more singles are expected to be released in the next few months in support of the album.
‘Slurred Preach’ is a song about following your own path and references religious views throughout, some early pre-release reviews of the track have seen the song draw criticism with many believing that the musician could alienate some of her fanbase with the track and it’s “anti-religious undertones”, but some early reviews have stated that the track is a positive thing, with one review stating “The song shows that she’s got a voice and she understands that she now has an outlet for that voice, it was first touched upon in ‘Family Nightmares’ which hit home to a lot of fans who have gone through similar difficulties and she’s done it once more with her latest single.”

The song features a dominant and dramatic musical backdrop emphasized by the sound of an Organ, another nod towards religion and church, it’s melodic and emotive rather than full of beats and energy and the lyrical theme matches the tone of the music extremely well. The track is released on May 18, 2014 in CD Single, Digital Download and Weekly Airplay formats, it was written entirely by Miami and was produced by Miami alongside Christian Fallon who has worked with the musician in the past. The song was recorded in April at Half-Moon Studios in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be released through Songs to Love and Die By Records.

Lyrics

“From an early age, I was taught to be free
No religious views
I was always told to be me
Don’t worry about what people think, say or do
Just believe in yourself and someday they’ll believe in you
You don’t need a bible
To tell you what’s right or wrong
You don’t need a god
To help you become strong
The only faith that you truly need
Is the faith and belief in you
Don’t listen to their preaching of what they believe to be true

So I find my faith in the bottom of a glass
I find my joy in the face of friends
I find my heart flutter at the start of a night
And I feel it ache as it ends
I find my eyes widen
At the sight of a familiar neon sign
I may be flawed
But I feel pretty fine

So you may have your churches
To confess your sins
You may have your cemetery’s
To remember those that heaven let in
Through those pearly gates
But if it seems like I don’t care
I’m alright here, thanks
Yeah, they don’t have neon signs up there

But it’s a lot more similar than you think
We sing along to the jukebox while you sing your hymns
You confess your sins in secret while ours come pouring out with a strong drink
We aren’t a million miles apart, I’d say
We’re all just trying to figure out why we’re all here today
The difference is, if you’ll give me a second
That we don’t preach at people, afford them blessings
We just let em be
Rather be happy as you are
Than pretend to be someone you’re not
For the sake of a god

It’s hardly relevant now, is it?
That we memorize these words
Words that were written so long ago
Preaching at us, sh*t that they think we should know?
Are we truly all god’s children?
Is this what you believe?
That we’re equal to killers and thieves?
And that love is only true if it’s with the opposite sex?
F*ck that sh*t, it’s tantamount to neglect

So how about we write a new bible?
That doesn’t preach hate
That focusses on supporting one another
To build each other up to be great
See, I don’t believe in god
I don’t believe in churches and hate
You can call me a non-believer
F*ck it, that’s great
But I do believe in something
I believe in love
It’s something they talk about in church
Love and faith go hand in hand
But it ain’t something they’ll ever truly understand”

13 - “Family Nightmares”

“Yo, you think you got it rough
Well, let me tell you what rough is
You ever felt like you lost the one thing in this world that you can’t live without
A kid without a parent, no place to call my home
Been stuck in care with kids that ain’t wanted no more
They cuttin’ themselves at seven years old
Just cryin’ all through the night
You try to tell em’ things will get better, that things will be alright
But inside you still hurtin’
Mom and dad they got taken away
People come out to see me
I don’t hear a thing that they say
But then they sit me down
Say I’m going somewhere new
“Hey, Amelle! We found a new family for you
Yeah, they gon’ take care of you”
But they don’t the hell that they would put me through

New daddy liked to be out drinking/New mommy alone in her bedroom thinking
I hear that knock on the door/That I’ve heard before
He walks into the house/Starts runnin’ his mouth
New mom screams “get out”/He warns her not to shout
What the f*cks this all about/He starts cussing her out
“Amelle’s sleeping upstairs, don’t you f*cking raise your mouth/But he raises more than that
Swings his fist like a baseball bat/She’s trying to calm him down
But it don’t seem to be working/I’m watching from the stairs, quietly lurking
My heart drops like a stone/I vow to always be alone
As I hear new mommy groan/The punches that he’s throwin’
I run down the stairs/Screaming leave her alone
Fingers in my ears so I don’t have to hear the pain/But he don’t listen, he’s throwin’ his fists at her again
I’m almost crying/I gotta stop him, I’m tryin’

But I’m too young to pull him back
His fury in full swing attack
She’s barely moving on the floor
It don’t stop him from beating her more
He swings out his arm
Catches me out
I scream as the blood flies out
I’m punching and kicking and nothing works
Just wishing that there’d be an end to this pain
I’d rather be on the streets, alone in the rain
At just twelve years old, my innocence was gone
I don’t know how I learnt to be strong

I hide under the table/Hoping this will all come to an end
I got my fingers in my ears/But I can hear new mom’s screaming all over again
And then suddenly the screaming stops/The door kicked open by cops
Neighbours heard the screaming/I thought I was dreaming
Some f*cked up nightmare/Still haunts me
The image of his face/Returns at night and taunts me
But the cops took him away/While the neighbours looked on
Ambulance came and took away my new mom/I heard em’ say it was like Vietnam
Civil warfare/What happened to f*cking childcare
Those f*ckers put me in there/Without a care
No police checks/Just neglect
But I’m older now/Not old enough to forget

I got out of the cycle as soon as I could
Found a life for myself, just like I hoped I would
Tried to be strong
But I still relive that pain
Flashing memories return time and time again
But I’m trying, I still find myself sat up all night crying
Just put on that brave face
Show some grace
I know he’s gone forever
And now I’m finding my place
Building up from the ground
They call it foundations
Cutting out the bad memories
Fear and frustrations
I’m here right now, just working on me
Being all that I hope to be”

14 - “Two Feet”

“Things are different these days
People walking up to me, they know my name
They give me a smile and say they’re glad that I made it
Offer me their hand and encourage me to shake it
They use words like inspiration like it’s going outta fashion
Say that I helped em’ through sh*t
But they can’t see that I’m the one that’s crashing
Like a tidal wave against a broken old boat
I’ve ran outta hope, it just don’t float
Still haunted and tainted by a childhood of scars
I’ve got people encouraging me to reach for the stars
When I can’t bare the thought of putting my life on the page
The spotlight shines down and I’m back on the stage
All eyes staring up at me
In those moments, I’m the last person I wanna be
And I’m left wondering
Will I ever be free?

Two feet firmly on the ground
I’ll try to place one in front of the other
Two feet firmly on the ground
I’ll try to place one in front of the other
Two feet firmly on the ground
Tryin’ to place in one in front of the other

I still hear them say that they’re glad that I made it
But I don’t really feel like I deserve it
When they say I gave em’ strength in their darkest hour
They say they drew courage from my own strength and power
But they don’t see that those past demons haunt me
They don’t see that they trap me and taunt me
I’m so f*cked up, just listing my flaws in my head
Thinking the only relief will come to me when I’m dead
And little do they know that I’m barely holding on
It just takes one memory to trigger
And this could all be gone

Two feet on rocky ground
I’m teetering, stumbling, falling down
Two feet on rock ground
I’m teetering, stumbling, falling down
Two feet on rock ground
I’m teetering, stumbling, falling down

I put my story out there for the whole world to hear
I guess I figured if it’s out there then it would remove the fear
Now there’s people that relate to it
And that’s cool to see
But they’re claiming I’m their saviour
That’s not who I’m destined to be
It can’t be like that
Think I should take a step back
It just can’t be like that
Think I’ll take a step back

Two feet on rocky ground
I’m teetering, stumbling, falling down
Two feet on rock ground
I’m teetering, stumbling, falling down
Two feet on rock ground
I’m teetering, stumbling, falling down

I’ve cried myself to sleep before
Learnt that those tears seem to dry pretty quickly
But there’s a knot in my stomach and it’s making me feel sickly
Backstage at these shows, I got people congratulating me
I just keep my head bowed low, hoping they’ll just let me be
But I feel a hand grab mine
A girl bout’ seventeen
I look her in her eyes
They sparkle with hopes and dreams
She looks at me and smiles
Says we’ve felt the same pain
Foster kid problems
She says that we’re just the same
And she just says thank you
Says family nightmares guided me through
In that moment I gained clarity
I realized I’ve got a job to do

Two feet firmly on the ground
I’ll try to place one in front of the other
Two feet firmly on the ground
I’ll try to place one in front of the other
Two feet firmly on the ground
Tryin’ to place in one in front of the other”

Liyah: Feeling this album to the max. You did it boo, can't wait to see you blow up even bigger ;) Keep doing your thing mama!

Isabel: Ooh, I love every song. I love your voice, it's so refreshing to listen to like it's not too rough and intimidating but it's kind of playful. I just love it lol. I enjoyed this album a lot! I think this will be one of the top contenders in urban music and Pop as well. I'm going to say that 'Blazin' My Own Trail aaaand 'Blood Rush' are my favorites, they are just too catchy.

"My God! We truly are a talented bunch. The fact that we write entire albums all on our own while the biggest stars in the world have 45 co-writers on ONE track?? Where the hell are OUR record deals and GRAMMYS?" -BrownSugar

Kourtney: I have to admit that I just bought another copy of your album, making this the tenth time I've bought it. In my defense I've been giving them to people as gifts. So I'm definitely not crazy or anything lol. Btw my little sis wanted me to tell you that you're the greatest. I told her she could tell you in person at the Warped Tour but she insisted I do it now lol.
