The First Time was initially going to be released as a five track mini album (EP) but after the huge success of the album's leading single, Nick went into the studio to write and record additional records to compile a 10 track debut album. Nick Urie serves as the executive producer of the album and wrote and co-produced every single track included on the album. The album draws inspiration from genre's such as Britpop, alternative rock and indie rock but is a predominately pop album with shades of alternative music. The First Time features production from Dan Priddy, Mark Crew, Blackwell, Julian Bunetta, Andrew Goldstein, Andrew Watt, Louis Bell and Peter Hoffmann. So far, the album has had one official single release which was Cupid. The single served as the first official single by the 18 year old songwriter after he entered the the music business just earlier this year. Cupid shot straight to number one on Chart Heat Singles for two weeks and solidified Nick Urie as a sure fire artist to watch and was also a springboard to the release of the artists debut album. Nick followed up with the album's second single, "Cliche Love" in June 2020. The track was met with positive reviews. Despite officially entering the music business earlier this year the young musician spent most of his years writing music and learning from his older siblings. In January of 2020, Nick Urie was featured on "FADER" as an artist to "look out for" prompting some attention to be shift to the up and coming star. The FADER feature garnered Nick a social media following and over the next few weeks Nick began teasing new music and captioned one specific photo stating "get ready for me". In late January, Nick started an soundcloud account and posted some demos of earlier works from studio session back at home which gave listeners a tease of his fresh, crisp vocals. Shortly after, Cupid was released and Nick was launched into stardom. Nick Urie is arguably the biggest young new artist to appear on the music scene in 2020. "And it was like, overnight I was launched into this overwhemingly high amount of media attention. One that was really not expected. Luckily for me, I've been blessed to come from a...very strong but dysfunctional family that sort of gave me a glimpse of what was to come. However, like my siblings told me, you can never truly prepare yourself for fame and it's still something I'm appreciative for, but something I'm also adjusting to. For many years I was the one in the shadows and suddenly, for the First Time, I was basically in center stage and even though I wasn't exactly ready for it, I enjoyed it" The album title "The First Time" was chosen to represent Nick's first experiences as he grows from a teenager to into a young adult: "I decided to name it “The First Time” because there’s nothing like...the first time. Every “first time” in so many aspects of life is special. First kiss, first love, first time making love. For me, I’ve had a lot of “first times” over the time period that I recorded this album and it’s also my first body of work! So it was only right that I named it The First Time." The First Time was recorded in England, where Nick is said to have gotten an inspiration by Brit-pop music and other musical influences. Initial recording for the album was smooth and the album did not recieve any major setbacks fortunately. The album is said to be emotive, driven, honest, and in same areas fun. "It's so surreal that my debut album is actually coming out. I want the The First Time to represent who I am and what I want people to hear from me. I want this album to allow people to get to know me musically because being a new artist, it's sometimes hard to basically solidify yourself musically. And it's even harder when you are so much associated with other individuals. In my case case, it's me being compared so much to my older siblings. So I wanted to make sure to record album album so people can get to know who Nicholas is. Not the younger brother and through this experience I really got to know who I was myself. I had the amazing opportunity to co-produce and write all the songs on the album and really just lock myself away and become one with me, and become one with music! And I've enjoyed this experience so much. In many areas this album represents many first experiences for me but I also wanted to include some interesting lyricism and experiences that I just thought of and felt was dope to write a song about it. There's this song, called DUI, on the album that is a perfect example of that. I didn't want to overthink in the album, I just wanted to let the vibe and the music flow and what came out of it was something so much better than expected. How have you been finding growing up in the public eye? You are a part of a prolific family in the music industry. How was it growing up as a Urie? You know as oddly as it sounds, it's all I've ever known. To be a Urie. People always ask, what's it like ...and I'm always like..."I don't know how to answer that"..."It's normal I guess? It's all I've ever known is to be in a family of musicians, so it feels normal to me because that's the lifestyle I've always known. So it's always tough to answer that question but I'd like to think that we're just like any other family, we have our ups and downs and all of that, we just all happen to be involved in music in one way or another. How do you juggle being a teenager and letting yourself be a teenager, with also being busy with your career? I think the best thing that my parents did was to not allow me to get into music earlier than the age of 18. So I was able to live my life as a teenager and do teenage things. Have a bit of a normal life you know? Or at least try to. I’ve always loved writing and music but never was allowed to really get out there until this year. Growing up, I always got the “you’re maddie, james or matt’s younger brother”..stuff like that but I grew used to it and I learned that it comes with the territory. After I graduated from high school, in June of last year...I rented out a studio and began working. I was ready to start the new chapter in my life. And I’m hella excited. What's your very first earliest musical memory? Man, there are so many! From very early on I remember being in the garage when James was in The Walls, and Matt was in Suburban Sunrise when I was a little kid. They always played music in there! It was like a little neighborhood venue. But for me, my earliest memory was when I started playing guitar when I was 9. It was just so freaking natural to me. I loved it from the moment I picked it up. My fingers on the strings. The vibrations. I was so inspired by all the music around me that it was only a matter of time. What was the first song you played on the guitar when you first started learning? Uhhhhh, I don’t really remember. But I remember the first song I knew how to play was Bob Dylan’s Knockin on Heaven’s Door. Iconic. Yes. I used to also play Sweet Caroline. Such tunes. Was there a certain point when you decided you wanted to do music as a career? Really early on I kinda just knew it was for me. Just being exposed to a musical family really inspired me early on. I wanted to be like them when I was kid. When my siblings all became huge stars and kind left home for long periods of time, I wanted to get out there too. I knew the time would come when I was old enough and could do exactly what I dreamt of and that dream wasn’t to live up to the name, but to do it because it’s my dream. Congrats on the new record! It’s an absolute banger. How does it feel for it to finally be out there? It feels great! It’s about time! I’ve been waiting for this moment for what seems like forever. I felt like Cupid was like, the perfect introduction to me and my singing and music style. I couldn’t be happier right now!! What inspired you to write “Cupid”? Love and Valentines Day haha. I think that’s what really inspired me to write Cupid. It’s kind of cliche but it’s real you know? Having strong feelings really makes writing about love that much easier, and it was in the month of February that I wrote and recorded the song. That feeling when you realize that you really are into someone...it’s like Cupid shot you. It’s real I’m telling you. The chorus talks about being saying goodnight and being dreams. How does that relate to the message of the songs to the fans? Even though I’m saying goodnight, I’m gonna see them again in my dreams because that’s where we will meet again. So even though we’re saying goodbye and goodnight, we’re gonna meet up as soon as I close my eyes. That’s really the message I wanted to get out. Dreaming of someone. Your debut E.P is titled “The First Time”. What made you name it that, and what can we expect from the E.P? I decided to name my e.p “The First Time” because there’s nothing like...the first time. Every “first time” in so many aspects of life is special. First kiss, first love, first time making love. For me, I’ve had a lot of “first times” over the time period that I recorded this E.P and it’s also my first body of work, so it was only right that I named it The First Time. It has 5 songs and you can expect to really get to know me as a musician with this E.P not only soundwise, but lyrically too. It's like the appetizer before the full length album. There are so many veteran stars leading pop right now: Brittany Knox, Weekend, Billy, Tisha Jackson, Stephanie Fierce, Amy-Jayne just to name a few. Is there anyone in particular out there who you're looking to as an inspiration for your own career? Anyone you'd see yourself even collaborating with? Wow, all those artists are amazing. I’d be honored to collaborate with any of them. I guess I am inspired by all of them in different ways because they’re all so different. I love Stephanie Fierce’s creative outlook, and Weekend’s catchy hooks, I love Billy’s vocals and Brittany Knox’s “knack for pop”, she just gets it. And then there’s Tisha Jackson who has really stood the test of time and reinvention and then there’s Amy Jayne who’s like the underdog who came out on top. I can really relate to, and learn from each of those artists. I honestly see me collaborating with all of them if ever given the chance haha. What do you hope for people to take away from listening to your music? Really anything positive. I'm no Joshua Grimmie so I'm not the one to preach here but I do want people to feel connected to my music. I want my fans to get a positive listening experience when they hear me. You know? And what's next for you? I'm the new guy in town...my debut single is out right now.. I'll be releasing my E.P and touring really soon!! Some new music and other surprises. The song talks about being "shot by cupid" and falling head over heels for another individual. Essentially, it's the perfect love song and focuses on Cupid's "arrow" being in "in the heart of mine". The song opens up with silky acoustics. The guitar riffs really set the tone for the song and rides along with mid-tempo beginning of the song that is rather reminicient of 90's Brit-pop. Nick's crisp, light vocals mixed perfectly with the guitar riffs and smooth backing beat and it doesn't take long before the song picks up. After the opening lines of the tracks over the calm guitar infused beats, that speaks about sharing a kiss with his love interest, the song unleashes into the pre-chorus that has Nick really shine vocally. He sings about saying goodbye and goodnight, because he'll be in their dreams tonight. You know, it's crazy that I'm finally releasing my debut single. I'm extremely nervous about it but I'm really happy with it. The song talks about Cupid and love and I must say...this song is a true story. And the fact that it's a true story really helps connect with it even more. Just one night, I let my heart flow and wrote how I was feeling and here it was, my debut record. I hope people enjoy this and I'm excited for the world to know more about me. There's so much more to come. The song doesn't take long to break into it's big chorus, where Nick sings (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)\|(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah) repeatedly over a big backing beat that includes synths, drums, and guitars. The chorus stands out because it takes off right after the pre-chorus and can take the listener by surprise. The second chorus speaks about the love interest and even hints at sex when Nick sings "That we that made one with each other /Heart beating like no other /Nothing like the first time /Nothing like the first time which sounds like losing virginity. The record clearly doesn't try to be entirely PG and speaks about things that come with falling deeply with someone. The chorus unleashes once more and the beats slow down for the bridge where Nick sings about how slow time goes when he's not with this significant other. The guitar beats speed up once more and the track unleashes into it's chorus once more until the song comes to a finish. The song clearly gives an ode to 80's pop as Nick's vocals has a sultry oscillation over the beat as the the song continues to pick up over the dreamy guitar chords, synths and drum beats that can easily pull the listener into a trance. Nick's ability to possess powerful vocals but still remain quite soft gives the song a nice mixture of prowess and softness over the synth heavy production. The obvious stand out on Cliche Love is the chorus where Nick coos "I want the cliche, the cliche love I want it all day, all day love/We kiss in the rain (cliche love, cliche love)" where he sings powerfully over strong synths that mix's perfectly with the tone of Nick Urie's voice. The bridge strips back the heavy backing beat and just consists of simple chords and a steady drums where Nick provides some soft, harmonizing background notes and soft vocals where he sings out: I don’t care who they are/Just you and me please/You and me please/Cliche love pure and clean as the song build's up it's final, big chorus. Lyrically, the song speaks about a love, but yearning for that cliche, cheesy love that includes a relationship consisting of pictures in the frame, living through the night, kissing in the rain. Nick also makes use of the word "he" and shows that he's not afraid to sing loves songs about a male, after coming out as gay earlier this year. This bravery of the young star makes Cliche Love more than just a summery love song, but also a testament to who he is and the type of love he wants. I've said this before, but Cliche Love is one of my favorite song off of my debut album because it comes straight from the heart. You know, who doesn't love a little bit of cliche love? The type of things you do with your boyfriend or girlfriend that is super cliche but super special. It's those little cliche things, like kissing in the rain, putting pictures in a from, watching movies and cuddling at night? Personally things that things that I love about my relationship and I felt like I needed to write a song about that because it really represent how I am feeling right now, how I was feeling when I was writing the record and how I intend to feel moving forward. I think this song also encompasses my musical style on the album and is really one of the more bright and uptempo records that I want to show that I am capable of performing. The First Time has a variety of sounds, records that are more guitar driven and darker, but then there's the ones that show more light-heartedness like Cliche Love that I felt the world needs to hear from me. Surprisingly enough, this song was one of the final songs recorded for The First Time and when I was done recording it, I knew it has to be a single because it really just makes you feel triumphant, makes you want to dance, makes you want to love...and that's why I feel so connected to this record and ultimately why I felt this needed to come out as the next single before the release of the album. I like how the songs feel personal to the character yet the words in the songs can flow well. I know it's not easy to use precise words when writing a song and trying to use exact words to mean something so personal, sometimes it can get hard to fit the whole puzzle of lyrics in the whole schemes, rhymes and stuff in a way! Personally I like how 'Best Of Me' opens the album and feels like an introduction to Nick, I like the two singles - they were perfect choices, I like 'Fill My Mind' because I can relate to the lyrics and the last song feels like a perfect single, I like its theme in lyrics and sound, it seems to have a nice message and it feels uplifting. :P

Going into writing and preparing this album I wanted to make sure it was cohesive and introduced Nick Urie as being more than just the youngest Urie brother, but more of a boy breaking free for the very first time, so I’m soooo happy Best Of Me got that message across and al the other songs too :)

The songs subject matter isn’t about being at a crossroads, it’s about having a connection to someone so strong that it becomes like an addiction and you can’t break away from them. Basically being stuck. I use the word ‘Skin’ to create the scenario of “touch” and “love making” as being one of the reasons for not being able to move on. Skin is one of the more complex songs lyrically on the album but that’s what makes it special :) Thanks Tika!
